I do not think the top generals will cooperate with Trump’s looney most recent loyalist if he orders them to ignore their oath to defend the U.S. Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic.

Note the language. Officers do not have to obey orders if that order violates the oath they took, and the majority of officers of all ranks do not like Trump.

When I was in the Marines we were taught to defy any order if it violated the Oath we took and the Military Code of Conduct. When I was serving in Vietnam near the end of my tour, I actually refused an order from a newbie lieutenant that was in violation of those rules. That lieutenant tried to get me court martialed, and a major refused to punish me after he learned what the lieutenant had ordered me to do and tore up the paperwork. Told me not to worry.

Yes, absolutely defend our constitution and bill of rights and liberty. But when a tyrannical government takes over to undermine our bill of rights, and US constitution and there is witnesses and evidence without a reasonable doubt. Catherine, As someone who lives in the bright red state of TN, a radical niche of his hard core followers are my immediate worry. They all carry concealed weapons, they are inside local police and sheriff’s departments, inside mega churches, and online stoking christian nationalism. I live in a Florida community with lots of active and retired military. I trust that the military will not follow rogue orders. They will follow the law. The local rednecks, Trump loyalists, are far more likely to participate in some illegal activities, if it comes to that.
I would not be surprised if Trump’s need to avoid being a loser will lead him to stage rallies in states with Republican legislatures. He would be courting more electoral college votes. He might do rallies in airplane hangers, proclaiming himself the real winner, repeating the lie that the elections were rigged, and criminal. He is not above having paid shills at such events who will churn up attention by shouting “Lock Biden Up.”

If Trump did attempt a coup using armed supporters outside the military, that would legitimately constitute an armed insurrection, a situation in which it would be legal & appropriate for the military to respond, unlike the circumstances under which departing Defense Secretary Esper objected to using the military — to suppress protests, even those that included violent incidents.
My fear is that Trump fired the leaders of the Pentagon to clear the way for him to use the military against civilians.
Diane, I do understand your concern, & certainly have no trouble believing that Trump would want, & possibly even try, to do this. However, my encounters with military personnel suggest that most field (as opposed to administrative) officers attained the positions they hold through years of putting their duty & oath above their personal views, under multiple administrations, & would consider it their obligation to refuse an order to take action, particularly deadly force, on American civilians under all but the most dire circumstances.

Do we believe that 4 years of Trump has been sufficiently damaging to compromise over 200 years of military honor? While Trump is crafty, in a slimy way, & deeply manipulative, at the core those qualities are signs of weakness, not strength. I just don’t credit him with that much power.
Who controls the DC National Guard?
The DC National Guard is the only one reporting directly to the President, but commanders would still have to consider whether an order to engage actively American citizens was a violation of their oath of service. FWIW, I think it’s unlikely they’d proceed.
I’m no expert; I’m just working from a layperson’s knowledge of law & military, but my guess is that if we’re concerned about it, military command & lawyers are also examining the issue & preparing contingency. If Trump did issue such an order, I’m sure there would be military lawyers ready to respond; this isn’t happening in a vacuum.
While, as I acknowledged, some military personnel due support Trump, there are clearly quite a few who take his whims & reactions with a truckload of salt. I mean:
1) Did you watch that big military parade Trump wanted to throw after seeing one in France? Me neither!
2) Seen any recruiting ads for the Space Force lately?

The Trump strategy is to stir up controversies and delay the appointment of electors. This will allow time for his loyalists and lawyers to put significant pressure on the Republican-controlled legislatures in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. The legislators will be pressured to appoint electors, ignoring their customary role in appointing electors who reflect the popular vote in their states.
This maneuver could be done by declaring there has been an “election failure”

He’s a traitorous, criminal con man, and, by the way, he makes fun of Christian religious conservatives behind their backs, as many who formerly worked for him have attested. Trump is USING such people. Trump told an interviewer that his favorite book was the Bible, but he was unable to name a single verse from it. He thinks that Second Corinthians is called Two Corinthians (as in “two Corinthians walked into a bar?). He has spent his life building casinos for gambling and cheating on his wives and bearing false witness and lying and blaspheming–basically violating every one of the ten commandments except, perhaps, honoring his criminal, racist father. You, Billy, are extremely confused.
And before you go screaming about Socialists, Billy, it might be a good idea for you actually to find out what Socialism is. I’ll give you a start. Technically, Socialism is worker ownership of the means of production. So, for example, an employee stock ownership plan is socialist. Under such a plan, the workers in a company get stock in it and so become part owners. Oh my! So scary!
But the term has also come to be associated, in people’s minds, with a type of government that provides essential services to the citizenry, such as Medicare and Social Security. And yes, when those programs were introduced, people screamed about them being Socialist. Your local fire department, your police, your military–these are all services to the people at large provided by the government. So, they all fall under this definition of Socialism. Oh my again. So scary!
You might also be interested to know that most of the free countries of Europe are Social Democracies. These are free countries that provide basic services such as healthcare and old age pensions. These Socialist Countries included the ones consistently ranked as the happiest in the world–countries like Denmark and Finland.
But people like Trump, who is profoundly ignorant, haven’t any notion what Socialism means. They just use it as a generic term for “something evil.” To scare ignorant folk who know no politics, economics, or history.

I certainly know almost nothing about everyday life in Cuba under the regime. I’ve read a couple reports from independent human rights groups that say that arbitrary arrests and detentions and beatings and retaliation, such as firing and public shaming and travel restrictions, against government critics there are still very common but have decreased a bit under Diaz-Canel, and I am curious but know nothing about the new Cuban constitution, set to go into effect, that removes the definition of Cuba as an officially Communist state. Certainly, I do not support coddling of repressive, fascist regimes, but I do wonder whether our current policies toward Cuba have had any genuine effect. My issue is that in the U.S., wages have been basically flat since 1975, while productivity has almost doubled, wealth and income inequality have grown enormously here, and we have millions of people, including children, without proper healthcare and suffering from food insecurity. And so I support the expansion of social programs to redress this, on the model provided by countries like Finland and Denmark and Germany.
So, we have these vastly different experiences, you and I. I grew up in Appalachia and witnessed breathtaking poverty in one of the wealthiest countries that the world has ever seen. I was lucky because my grandparents, with whom I lived, had a productive farm, and we lived reasonably well, but many around us experienced grinding, blinding poverty.
And, Mr. Mattos, I cannot imagine and am horrified by the idea of living in a country in which simply to produce a painting for someone, a person has to apply for a permit on the content to the Ministry of Culture. This is fascist repression. No doubt about it.

Surely such a move on the part of state legislators would not hold up in courts, for while the Constitution does allow for faithless electors and places much power to determine election law with the states, the states, by precedent and in some cases by law, long ago made their determinations about how electors are decided–they are to reflect the will of the people. A decision anywhere, to the contrary, would fly in the face of that bedrock principle of our representative democracy–that everyone’s vote matters.
Any court that would renounce that principle has renounced principles altogether and decided in favor of rule by raw, unchecked power. A rejection of that principle is a rejection of the principle of having principles, including, for example, the principle that people have a write to trial before impartial courts or that the Constitution and other laws and precedents matter. Such a decision by the Supreme Court would mean, “F-it. Anything goes from here on out.”

The Attorney General, Bill Barr, has given federal prosecutors approval to pursue allegations of “vote tabulation irregularities,” even before results are certified, and despite the fact that ordinarily prosecutors pursue cases only when there is credible evidence that a crime has been committed. An allegation is not evidence.
On Monday, Trump tweeted, without explanation, that Secretary of Defense Mark Esper had been “terminated,” as if no justification were needed. Emily Murphy, the Administrator of the Government Service Administration, has refused to certify Joe Biden as the President-elect. As a result, Biden will find it hard to transition smoothly, at a time when the pandemic is surging, our allies are watching with a mixture of hope and fear, and our enemies are lying in wait, eager to take advantage of a new President who may not have been told all that he needs to know to protect our national security. And two days ago Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared, with an air of cheerful authority, that “[T]here will be a smooth transition to a second Trump Administration.” Reportedly, later he added that the State Department was prepared for any eventuality, as if Biden’s having won the election were not a fact but a hazy possibility.
Trump and his enablers are acting in ways that suggest that Biden did not win the election — as if we should not trust the evidence of our own eyes and ears.
If this is an attempted coup, what is the remedy? Criticism from Democrats in Congress is not working. The general silence from their Republican counterparts is not helping matters. Biden’s calling Trump’s failure to concede “an embarrassment” is problematic, because it suggests that Trump’s refusal to acknowledge his defeat is a breach of etiquette, rather than a frightening power grab.
Our democracy is in peril.

Bob — at various points over the past 4 years the same idea has occurred to me, & I’ve actually considered the possibility of a work of fiction — in my case it was a movie — portraying these as near-future events (and let’s not forget strolling through the revelation of the “grab ’em by the p***y” comment after other campaigns of more qualified — at least less objectionable — candidates had been totally derailed by such scandalous offenses as an overzealous yell & poorly-timed hydration). In every case I walked out early, because it was such a ridiculously implausible premise. You have no reason to fear for constraints on religious liberty. The conservatives on the Supreme Court are doing their best to weaponize it, so that for example a person who designs and bakes wedding cakes may turn away a gay couple, even though the bakery is a place of public accommodation and even though the baker is simply being asked to do what he advertises, take money for making dessert for a wedding celebration he won’t be attending.
Joe Biden is a moderate Democrat. He is not a socialist or a communist. You might be interested to know that communism and socialism are conceptually distinct.
About “republic”: A republic is not “a set of laws and rules.” It is a form of government (ours) in which the people choose their representatives, who in turn make laws, and also choose those who will govern.
Also, the Supreme Court, in the Heller decision, declared that generally, under the 2nd Amendment, an individual has a right to own a gun. But no right is absolute. So some regulation is permissible. But unless you own a weapon that should be wielded only by a soldier, you have no reason to fear.
I’m not sure where you get your information. I recommend that you read reputable news sources that fact-check their reporting and issue corrections when needed. Try the NY Times (liberal) and The Wall St. Journal (conservative). The fewer the news sources you read, the more susceptible you might be to propaganda.
Finally, no one is changing our “electoral voting process” at the moment. I really have no idea what you’re talking about. If you mean that the election was somehow “stolen” from Trump, you are mistaken. Biden won the election fair and square. That Trump is not conceding, and many Republicans are remaining silent, IS something to worry about.

The laser can cause instant death occuring from the carterized burning wound all the way through the body about 1 inch in diameter. If I were you, you should try and stop this weapon being that it generates its own ammunition, range of fire and accuracy.

With open-carry laws in play in much of America our cities could become powder kegs. Violence could be triggered. Trump has set up Black Lives Matter and antifa for such a role/excuse to make his moves. I just read an article where it mentioned how Trump has quietly removed members on the Pentagon’s board. These members inlcuded such icons as Henry Kissinger and Madelein Albright. Why do these grand moves with only a few days left in house? Because he legitimately might try to remain in White House and he knows the military would be the only arm left to stop him. I need major news agencies to make this a big deal, because it is. He wants to rule forever, and he will do anything to make that happen.

You are not the only person to think that Trump was somehow cheated out of a second term. Trump has been saying for months that the only way he could lose is if the election were rigged against him. In a way, he was saying he had already been elected. That kind of thinking should concern anyone who cares about democracy.
Trump’s lawyers have sued in federal and state courts across the nation seeking to overturn the election by throwing out the votes of millions of people who voted for Biden. Often the lawyers wave their arms and cry “fraud,” but they do not actually provide evidence of fraud. So it is unsurprising that the cases brought by Giuliani and others have been tossed, often by conservative judges or Trump appointees. Judges do insist on evidence. Most recently, the conservative Supreme Court dismissed Texas’s lawsuit against swing states that voted for Biden, because its legal theory didn’t make sense. The Court ruled that Texas hadn’t been harmed by other states’ elections. To put it another way, states don’t have a right to meddle in other state’s elections.
You mention “insurrection.” I don’t know who you think is guilty of that crime. Certainly many folks, both liberal and conservative, are troubled by the recent lawsuits, which attack democracy and the people’s right to choose their President. Possibly Trump’s lawyers will face sanctions for clogging the courts with frivolous lawsuits.
In any event, folks who think that rampant fraud robbed Trump of re-election should insist on credible evidence of it. So far, Giuliani and his team have come up empty.
