David Dayen writes a daily report for The American Prospect on the pandemic called “Unsanitized.” In this entry, he comments on Trump’s selfishness in spreading the coronavirus.
He writes:
The President Is a Sick Man |
What happens when one of the worst people America has produced contracts the coronavirus? Well, he tries to hide it, first of all. He attends a series of fundraisers and rallies without disclosure, potentially exposing hundreds if not thousands of people. When he has to roll to the hospital because his condition is deteriorating, he shows fake photos of himself “at work,” even as most of the public knows he doesn’t work even in normal times. His physician, it is leaked, withholds details of his medical condition to lift his spirits and “convey confidence.” But it’s also noted that he’s taking a cocktail of medications that are really only reserved for very sick people. To top this off, he demands to be taken on a car parade around the Walter Reed Medical Center to wave at well-wishers, while Secret Service agents are forced to sit in the car with his contagious personage. So whether he’s leaving the hospital today or not, I think we can say that Donald Trump is handling this disease almost exactly as you would expect it. All presidents lie, and most of them lie about their health: here’s a rundown, but I note that Gover Cleveland, known in his day for the slogan “Tell the truth,” snuck out of Washington onto a boat and had half of his cancerous jaw removed, in secret, in the 1890s when removing half your jaw was, you know, a treacherous thing, and when a reporter found out about it and leaked the information Cleveland’s White House ruined his life. There’s a great little book about this called The President Is a Sick Man by Matthew Algeo. Point being, the default setting in White Houses is obfuscation about a president’s medical condition. Even when accounting for that, however, Trump’s… Trumpiness is exhausting and sad. The selfishness, the lies, the moral blindness is fully on display. “The President is a sick man” takes on new meaning. |
Great article. Thank you, Diane.
So true, too.
Trump is sick.
But we knew that. He’s a sick, sick man and has been for many decades.
If, Lord forbid, the disease were to take him, then his gravestone could read,
Here lies Donald Trump. But that’s nothing new.
Here’s wishing him, and all the people he’s infected or caused to be infected by downplaying the severity of the virus, holding mass rallies, and staggering about pretending to be too tough to wear a mask, a speedy recovery.
And here’s wishing him a resounding defeat come November 3rd.
What can we say? The Republicans seem incapable of reining him in. There have got to be powerful incentives behind their moral blindness. It’s beyond disgusting. Of course, knowing what we generally do or allow to be done to whistle blowers, I can almost understand it.
The powerful incentives have dollar signs plastered all over them. The floodgates are open and the cash is flowing. Dirty money and they are all awash in it. They are capable of “reining” him in but refuse. This current arrangement is quite lucrative no matter how many it murders and infects.
One consolation is poetic justice. If Trump’s collision with the truth of COVID-19 is as serious as David Dayen writes, then TrumpEekThinlySkin Always Lying Donald Trump, if he survived the virus, is going to have damage to his body that could be serious enough to destroy the quality of what life will be a challenged mortal coil.
“For survivors of severe COVID-19, beating the virus is just the beginning”
… “Many COVID-19 patients who need a ventilator never recover. Although survival rates vary across studies and countries, a report from London’s Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre found that 67% of reported COVID-19 patients from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland receiving “advanced respiratory support” died. A study in a smaller patient group in China found that only 14% survived after going on a ventilator.” …
“Another risk for hospitalized patients is delirium—a state of confused thinking that can lead to long-term cognitive impairments such as memory deficits. “What we’re finding in COVID is that there’s a ton of delirium,” says E. Wesley Ely, a pulmonologist and critical care physician at Vanderbilt University whose team is preparing to publish those findings” …
https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/04/survivors-severe-covid-19-beating-virus-just-beginning
Jeez (or should that be jizz?) and The Kremlin’s Greedy Lying Agent Orange already had a ton of delirium when COVID-19 moved into his body without permission and signing a lease agreement.
Imagine, if The Dirty Donald does survive, his malignant narcissism could be twice as bad as it was before the virus decided to squat in his body without paying rent.
Will Trump take COVID-19 to court for not paying the rent he would have charged the Secret Service when they have to stay at Mara logo on one of The Toxic Dump’s many cheating golf games?
Just had a thought. WIth the virus, in Trump’s body he is literally a toxic spill.
Putin, I have read, is not interacting with anyone. He is taking no chances. Of course, he just won election to a new 16-year term, so he doesn’t need to campaign.
Putin is smarter than Trump. Who knew?
This is the second letter with the official U.S. seal and signed in sharpie by the Great Trump that I’ve received within a few days. Ewww. My name and Trump’s on the same page. I have no idea what I signed/wrote to be so “blessed”. I sincerely DO NOT think that Trump signed this beauty while in the hospital. [His sharpie signature did not copy/paste.]

He speaks hate. He marginalizes and demonizes impoverished & desperate people. He advocates violence. He condones cold blooded murder. Biden 2020! My students cried the day he was elected. Some of the primary students were feral because they had spent time in the detention centers. He must go! He will go. I will not rest until he is removed from office!
I think sick or not he needs to quarantine himself. By parading around the hospital is only potentially people other people at risk. No one knows the next person immune system. At this rate more and more people will be tested positive for COVID. To lie about your results or actually working is ludicrous. If he is indeed sick, his entire Secret Service and anyone who had contact with him or his immediate circle needs to be tested and take proper measurements to ensure no one else contracts this. This is serious. He took COVID as a joke this entire time and now is the time to really understand the severity of COVID and their health.
I picture his mind as an odds calculator, forever generating stats pos & neg for this or that action, with the ‘bottom line’ being what supports his agenda for re-election/ power/ etc. I suspect his health threat to close associates during these risky ventures enters his mind briefly, then the calculator does the odds & says, e.g., “only 10% associates will actually contract it from me, maybe 1% of them will have serious cases– & if we’re talking routine staff no one will hear about it anyway– vs: my campaign is helped by this move; DUH no contest.” Those he endangers are digits to him, not people with lives like him.
Simple way to gauge this president’s health: If he’s tweeting 24 hours a day, it’s because he is mentally ill. If he isn’t tweeting all day and night, it’s because he is physically ill.
Makes sense!

I didn’t realize that Trump had to give permission for the doctors to give out any information to the public. This probably is why there are conflicting messages about whether or not ‘feeling really good’ in any way resembles the truth. There has to be a reason why Conley cannot give out information about Trump’s lungs.

‘Feeling Really Good!’ President Trump to Leave Hospital and Continue Recovery at White House

…But he also cautioned that it was “uncharted territory” having a patient receive such aggressive medication so early in the course of the disease, and he said Trump would not be fully out of the woods for another week.
Conley repeatedly declined to share results of medical scans of Trump’s lungs, saying he was not at liberty to discuss the information because Trump did not waive doctor-patient confidentiality on the subject…

I’m not sure about the ‘legal’ ins & outs on this. It’s possible it45’s own doc can easily be pressured on releases of med info: he’s a WH employee. And I suspect Walter Reed drs’ releases are ultimately controllable by him; they are military employees. And/ OR: any & all press releases on it45’s condition may be subject to Dept of Home Security review! That’s an angle that hasn’t been emphasized much, due to covid: press concern has been focused on it45’s illnesses as a case study in infection/ spread which we public needs to understand—here’s a guy who didn’t follow CDC recommendations & caught it/ maybe spread it, etc. But as discussed in press, the details & severity of past presidents’ illnesses did not reach the public, because of concern over the international ramifications of a powerful nation whose leader may be incapacitated; it’s like saying no one is in power.
Don’t HIPPA regulations apply to the President?
It’s legal: Trump controls what Conley says to the public. Which means we don’t know the truth of how bad he is.
………………….
How Trump is using HIPAA to pick which medical details are released to the public
HIPAA protects every patient’s privacy, including Trump’s. But he seems to be using it for political advantage.
White House physician Sean Conley had a ready explanation on Monday for why he couldn’t share certain information about President Donald Trump’s Covid-19 case with reporters or the public: HIPAA.
Those five letters (typically pronounced hip-pah) stand for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a 1996 federal law meant to protect medical patients’ privacy. When reporters asked the president’s attending physician whether chest scans had shown any damage to Trump’s lungs since he had contracted the coronavirus, Conley cited HIPAA to deflect the question.
It may have felt opportunistic. After all, Conley had spent most of his press conference explaining in detail how much better Trump was feeling, how encouraged doctors were by his progress, and declaring that the president was “back.” Yet when faced with some uncomfortable questions, about Trump’s lung scans or when Trump last tested negative for the coronavirus, Conley hid behind HIPAA.
But the truth is HIPAA is meant to protect patients from having details of their health or medical care released without their permission. So while Conley may not have expressly said that Trump didn’t want his lung scans or test results disclosed, the president would have the power — as would any other patient — to prevent his doctor from sharing those details if he didn’t want them to become public, while allowing other details to be shared.
Jonathan Turley, a public interest law professor at George Washington University, explained how HIPAA requires a patient’s consent before their medical information is released…
“Since Dr. Conley is one of Trump’s treating physicians, he’s covered by HIPAA,” Sharona Hoffman, a Case Western law professor who specializes in medical privacy, told me over email. “Consequently, he is obligated under HIPAA to withhold medical information that Trump doesn’t want released.”…
In other words, the only reason Conley couldn’t tell reporters what Trump’s lung scans showed or the timeline for his test results is if Trump didn’t want him to. That’s his right as a patient. But it is bound to engender more distrust.
The White House has already been inconsistent at best in its description of the president’s condition, with what we do know of Trump’s care regiment suggesting a more serious case than the official prognosis. The vast majority of Americans — 69 percent — say they don’t trust the information coming from the White House about the president’s health, according to a new CNN poll…

Those members of the secret service escorting him (back to the WH – “THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO TAKE A BULLET FOR THE PRESIDENT, NOT FROM HIM”
The man has no regard for human life.
He – and many quoted at his NJ fundraiser and no doubt others – have said “you get sick and hopefully you get better” – They treat it like a regular flu not fully understanding – nor caring – 200,000 deaths. It’s unconscionable – reckless – and yes indicative of a very sick man. His return to the WH is beyond words.
Real white contagious men don’t wear masks.
Hold ever republican on a ballot – local, state, and federal – who has said nothing accountable.
W. Bush was sicker, and he is guilty of many more massacres and organized felonies.
Kathleen Nelson: I don’t stand up for Bush W. His actions created wars that never end.
That is NOT the subject of conversation at this time. Is it supposed to make Trump look better when ONLY 210,000 Americans have died due to his incompetence and lack of leadership?
NYT:
A CNN poll released Monday showed no signs of a sympathy bump for the ailing president. Fifty-seven percent of Americans disapproved of Trump’s overall job performance, according to the poll, which was mostly conducted Thursday through Sunday. He hasn’t had a worse disapproval rating in a CNN poll going back more than two years.
Sixty percent of respondents said they disapproved of Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis, and just 37 percent approved — his poorest result yet on that question in any CNN poll.
Sixty-three percent of the country said that the president had acted irresponsibly toward those around him when it came to preventing the spread of the virus. And roughly seven in 10 said they did not trust most of the information provided by the White House on the pandemic.
Respondents who were interviewed after Trump had announced his positive test were asked how concerned they were about the government’s ability to function while Trump is sick. Just under one-third said they were worried; 66 percent said they weren’t particularly concerned…
White House officials have gone no further than notifying people who came in close contact with Trump in the two days before his diagnosis, which came on Thursday evening. The administration has also prevented the C.D.C. from being involved in the process, even though it is the government’s most powerful resource when it comes to contact tracing.
An unmasked McEnany has interacted with journalists multiple times in the days since the Sept. 26 event. At least three White House reporters have tested positive in recent days. Two of McEnany’s staff members have, too.
“Get out there. we have the best medicines in the world”. REALLY? How about the millions who have no insurance or the millions who can’t afford their deductibles or co-pays? What about the people who have been charged outrageous amounts to just get a test that would come back in two weeks?
He continues to try to project how strong he is and nobody else should worry because, “Maybe I’m Immune, I don’t know.” “I stood out front. I led.”
Freaking self-absorbed IDIOT!!

‘Maybe I’m immune’: Watch the video Trump posted after hospital release
Oct 5, 2020 / 08:04 PM CDT / Updated: Oct 5, 2020 / 08:04 PM CDT
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — President Donald Trump tweeted a new video recorded after he returned to the White House in which he tells the American public not to be afraid of COVID-19, which has killed more than 200,000 people in the U.S. and more than a million worldwide.
In message that is sure to infuriate medical doctors trying to keep the country safe, Trump says he has “learned so much” about the virus he contracted. And he says: “Don’t let it dominate you. Don’t be afraid of it.”
Trump was treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center by a team of some of the country’s best doctors and he received an experimental drug not readily available to the public.
“Now I’m better, maybe I’m immune, I don’t know,” he said.
Nonetheless, Trump told his followers that they had little to fear.
“Don’t let it dominate your lives, get out there,” he said. “You’re going to beat it. We have the best medical equipment. We have the best medicines.”
Trump also again defended his decision to continue traveling and holding events before he got sick, saying he “knew there’s danger to it, but I had to it. I stood out front. I led.”..

Not a fan of the Lincoln Project. Nonetheless, this is masterful.
I read that Trump is quite the fan of Evita.
I don’t care what anyone says: I love the Lincoln Project!
Bravo Lincoln Project! When I saw it go out on the WH balcony & remove its mask, Evita immediately came to mind.
I don’t care if Harris has a plexiglass shield & 12′ of distance from Dense. I fear for her health, & I wish her team had insisted on a virtual debate.
No telling if this would, in fact, be a viral debate.
I like the comment, “We feel comfortable working here, those of us who are still here.” Most work from home or are sick. Trump should have stayed in the hospital instead of infecting people in the WH. That wouldn’t have portrayed the ‘I’m invincible” and ‘Don’t worry about COVID-19″ image that he wants to protect. HE IS SICK, both mentally and physically.
Some people are mad at the chief of staff for not being able to control Trump. HA. Maybe Ivanka could control him but she doesn’t want to lose any of his money.

Trump’s Return Leaves White House in Disarray as Infections Jolt West Wing
The West Wing was mostly empty, cleared of aides who were sick or told to work from home, and staff in the White House residence were in full personal protective equipment.
The White House that President Trump woke up in on Tuesday morning was in full-blown chaos, even by the standards of the havoc of the Trump era.
Aides said the president’s voice was stronger after his return from the hospital Monday night, but at times he still sounded as if he was trying to catch air. The West Wing was mostly empty, cleared of advisers who were out sick with the coronavirus themselves or told to work from home rather than in the capital’s most famous virus hot spot. Staff members in the White House residence were in full personal protective equipment, including yellow gowns, surgical masks and disposable protective eye covers.
Four more White House officials tested positive, including Stephen Miller, a top adviser to Mr. Trump, bringing to 14 the number of people carrying the virus at the White House or in the president’s close circle. Mr. Trump, diagnosed with Covid-19 last week, was still livid at his chief of staff, Mark Meadows, whose effort on Saturday to tamp down the rosy portrait of Mr. Trump’s condition given to reporters by his chief doctor was caught on camera. Other officials were angry with Mr. Meadows for not even trying to control the president.
Some aides tried to project confidence — “We feel comfortable working here, those of us who are still here,” Alyssa Farah, the White House communications director, said in an interview on Fox News — but many saw the situation as spiraling out of control. The pandemic that Mr. Trump had treated cavalierly for months seemed to have locked its grip on the White House. West Wing aides, shaken by polls showing the president badly trailing Joseph R. Biden Jr., worried that they were living through the final days of the Trump administration.
The disarray was at the same time spreading across Washington. Almost the entire Joint Chiefs of Staff, including its chairman, Gen. Mark A. Milley, went into quarantine on Tuesday after coming in contact with Adm. Charles W. Ray, the vice commandant of the Coast Guard, who tested positive for the coronavirus. Late in the day, the stock market took a dive when Mr. Trump abruptly called off talks for a congressional coronavirus relief bill after the Fed chair, Jerome H. Powell, said such a stimulus was badly needed.
Some White House staff members wondered whether Mr. Trump’s behavior was spurred by a cocktail of drugs he has been taking to treat the coronavirus, including dexamethasone, a steroid that can cause mood swings and can give a false level of energy and a sense of euphoria…
Prominent supporters of the administration said Mr. Trump should have stayed at the hospital until he was no longer infectious or should remain confined to his residence.
“When a boss comes down with Covid, whether that boss is the president, a C.E.O., a principal at a school, a union foreman on a shop floor, and the boss shows up for work, it sends a very worrisome message to all of those around the boss,” said Ari Fleischer, a former press secretary to President George W. Bush. “There is a community of people who work in the White House, not just political appointees. A good boss always takes care of his or her employees.”…
There is no fixing stupidity. History will not be pretty towards Trump’s ignorance.

Trump May Have Covid, but Many of His Supporters Still Scoff at Masks
They echo misinformation that the president has spread for much of the year, as he has sought to minimize the threat of the virus.
…“I have my own business and I don’t have anybody wear a mask in my business,” said Mr. Girvin, a used-car dealer. “I don’t buy into it. When you look at the facts, with how many people die of influenza every year. Obesity kills more people than the Wuhan virus does.”…
On the contrary, Trump loyalists echoed misinformation that the president has spread for much of the year, as he has sought to minimize the threat of the virus to aid his re-election.
Voters who support the president falsely claimed that data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on deaths and cases were wrong, that getting the virus was no worse than getting the flu, and that it was introduced and kept in the spotlight only by Mr. Trump’s Democratic opponents.
“Who do you think brought this into the country?” said Mr. Girvin, who has shared posts on Facebook that independent fact checkers have labeled misinformation. “Joe Biden has enough nerve to say Donald Trump’s killing people? No. The far-left liberals are causing this. The Pelosis, the Soroses and all these people, that’s who caused it. And I wish them all the worst.”
As interviews with Mr. Girvin and others make clear, Mr. Trump has managed to politicize science during a public health crisis, something that historians will likely look back on as a defining aspect of the coronavirus pandemic.
Scoffing at masks, social distancing and crowd avoidance — all measures recommended by health experts, including in the Trump administration — has become a test of loyalty for fervent supporters of the president, who mocked Mr. Biden’s masks during their debate last week and, on returning to the White House on Monday from the hospital, ripped his off, despite being highly contagious…
The big question is, “What is Trump doing to protect people who work in the WH?” Probably nothing. He doesn’t respect anyone else.

‘Yellow gown.’ ‘Surgical mask.’ ‘Gloves.’ White House memo warns staff how to handle being around the infected president.
In a memo titled “Precautions and POTUS Interactions” sent around the White House this week, staff members were warned about what to do when interacting with the president, including acquiring personal protective equipment from an “Isolation Cart.”
Staff members are to go to the Oval Office or the residence on the second floor, where the first family lives, only if they are requested to go and expected to be there. If staff members are not in close contact with President Trump, meaning they’re more than six feet away from him, only a “surgical mask” and hand sanitizer are required, according to the memo from the White House Management Office, which was reviewed by a New York Times reporter.
But within six feet, people must use sanitizer and “remove any outer garments,” according to the memo. “Ensure you are wearing the following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). PPE is provided in the Isolation Cart” that’s located “in the foyer area of the second floor residence and the outer Oval Office,” the memo stated.
The memo listed the types of equipment, including, “Yellow gown,” “Surgical mask,” “Protective eye wear” and “Gloves.”
Upon exiting, people are instructed to remove gowns and gloves and put them in a trash receptacle next to the cart, clean the eye shields with wipes that are provided and save them for future use, and then wash hands or use sanitizer after leaving.

White House staff, Secret Service eye virus with fear, anger
…Several who spoke with The Associated Press expressed concern over the cavalier attitude the White House has taken when it comes to masks and distancing. Colleagues, they said, are angry, but feel there’s little they can do…
Trump has joined first lady Melania Trump, who also tested positive, in the residential area of the White House. It is typically served by a staff of roughly 100 people, including housekeepers, cooks, florists, groundskeepers and five or six butlers — who interact most closely with the president, said Kate Andersen Brower, who wrote the “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House.”…
Still, Brower said she recently spoke with three former employees who expressed concern about the health of current workers, but were too afraid to speak publicly. Many are Black or Latino, among the demographic groups that have been more vulnerable to the virus.
“The butlers always feel protective of the first family, but there’s just a concern about whether or not the staff would get sick,” Brower said. Most are older, she said, “because they work from one generation to the next. They are people who have been on the job for 20 to 30 years. They want to work to get their full pensions.”…
