Jack Hassard, a professor of science education, scoffs at Trump’s claim that California could avoid forest fires by raking leaves on the forest floor. The cause of the raging fires, he writes, is climate change. Trump has declared that climate change is a hoax so he can’t admit what scientists agree is a growing environmental crisis.
This interesting post quotes Trump’s exchange with California officials. It’s painful to read because Trump is so clearly stupid.
By the way, Governor Newsom pointed out that the federal government owns 57% of California’s forest. The state owns less than 5%. If Trump wants leaf-raking, he should hire people to do it on federal lands.
From the Sacramento Bee:
Trump ignored the fact that the federal government manages much of the forested land in the West. Of the 33 million acres of forest in California, roughly 57% is owned and managed by the U.S. Forest Service or federal Bureau of Land Management, according to a report by the state’s Little Hoover Commission. State and local governments control only 3%, while the rest is private.

Trump. Is. A. Dangerous. Moron.
And California is literally burning.
Four more years of him, and it may be too late.
If Trump wants leaf-raking, he should hire people to do it on federal lands.
Unemployment problem solved, except for the fact that prisoners are being enlisted to help fight these fires.
Trump would say “blowing one’s breath on the FIRES along with raking the leaves” works. Trump knows NOTHING except how to LIE and BULLY.
He’s a MORON and THE SECURITY THREAT for America. He works for Putin, his rubles bag, and this is why he is hanging on to power, because he doesn’t want to go to jail.
Donald, you’re right. You can stop all the fires by raking leaves. Here’s a rake. There’s a fire. Have a good time.
Gavin Newsom has approved 350 new fracking permits in California. https://biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press-releases/new-permits-newsom-ramps-fracking-california-2020-07-06/
Joe Biden emphatically declared that he is not going to ban fracking. What good does “believing” in climate science do if you’re not going to act on it?
Who will Biden appoint to the SCOTUS?
We should be careful how we frame the discussion of public lands. Trump’s supporters, like the pardoned criminals that occupied Malheur NWR, would like nothing better than to see the public lands mid-managed so that congress would see fit to sell it to them for pennies on the dollar.
One of my sons is in Oregon now fighting fires and he is not “raking leaves.” Fortunately, they have had a reprieve from the hot dry weather with a healthy dose of rain that has allowed them to catch up a bit. This coming week promises a return to warmer, drier weather, so let’s hope that the wind doesn’t pick up, too. Everyone is still nervous but a lot more confident that they can at least contain the current fires. Let’s hope the weather is truly moderating. Trump is truly ignorant; he doesn’t even have the sense to know when to keep his mouth shut.
Many of the fires on public lands in California were on federal lands. Why don’t Trump and Pence go to California with their rakes and shovels? It’s better exercise than playing golf and tweeting.
We have seen more fires globally as a result of climate change. Can we blame the Australians for their bush fires? We are going to have limit human activities in forests as it causes a risk to the environment. This is not a time for pyrotechnic gender reveal parties.
Obviously Trump wrong about raking leaves. Obviously climate change is a huge factor in the growth of fires. Big problems often have more than one contributing factor. Our past paradigm of fire suppression is not natural and it is bad science. In natural ecosystems small fires are part of the ecosystem. Some plants can’t reproduce without fire. Science Friday this past week had a nice segment on natural fire and the pre-Columbian Americas. Suppressing small fires just means that really big devastating fires will happen later.
How about a short poll to decide the dumbest thing Trump has said so far?
rake the forest to stop wildfires
take chloroquine to be safe from COVID-19
drink bleach to kill the COVIC-19 virus
the Democrats will use mail-in voting to cheat
Any suggestions to add to this list?
Trump, 9-16-16: “Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it,” Trump said in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 16. Neither of those things is true. end quote
That is such a massive whopper sandwich of lies on so many levels that it makes Goebbels look like a boy scout. It was Trump who pushed the birtherism garbage for years and then in 2016 he does a 180 and blames Hillary!!!???? Maybe this is not an example of dumb but more an example of mendacity and lying on an epic scale off the charts.
Barack Obama has done well, in his elections, unlike Ugh! Obama lost to Rush once. Obama’s US Senate (D-IL) primary and general election numbers are much higher than his indirect predecessor, Carol Mosely Braun (a native Illinoisan). 😁
Obama’s presidential popular and Electoral College votes are much higher than Ugh!”s too. 😁
Ugh! only won the Electoral College, which isn’t saying much. ☹️
“Nobody” cares where Obama was born, which was Hawaii. 😁
speduktr: G-d bless your son. May he–& all the other brave, selfless firefighters– stay safe.
And all of us fight the climate crisis in every way we can.
