Under the weak leadership of the United States, the global reputation of the United States has plummeted, according to a new poll reported in the Washington Post.
President Trump defended his handling of the coronavirus pandemic during an interview with Fox News over the weekend, arguing that he took “tremendous steps” early in the outbreak, which “saved probably two or two and a half million lives.”
But much of the world appears to think otherwise. In a new poll of 13 nations released Tuesday, a median of 15 percent of respondents said the United States had handled the pandemic well, while 85 percent said the country had responded poorly.
The data, released by Pew Research Center, suggests that the international reputation of the United States has dropped to a new low in the face of a disorganized response to the novel coronavirus.
The country leads the world in virus-related deaths.
International affairs analysts say it may be difficult to repair the damage to the United States’ standing overseas.
Among some traditional allies like Germany, views of the United States have declined to the lowest levels since Pew began tracking them nearly two decades ago.

So many of these diehard Trumpsters see themselves as the victims. Meanwhile, they are the ones stomping on the world’s face.
And, the more the United States is criticized by the rest of the world, the more their sense of victimhood is reinforced. Here’s the U.S. being picked on again! It’s a perverse validation of their weirdo, fantasyland version of American exceptionalism.
Ironically, tragically, the Trumpters are NOT exceptional. They are are not unique and noble. They are a sad and shabby cliche…the type of citizen who throughout history has allowed demagogues and dictators to hijack and trash democracies. They are weak, mean, bullies as well as millions of bystanders afraid or too selfish to stand up to them.
Trump and his followers, his enablers are the opposite of whatever version of American exceptionalism one might believe in. But what else is new these days? Ignorance has truly become strength, just as Orwell described it. At least until November 3….maybe.

Some may remember back a few years when first, I think, the Netherlands made spoof on Trump – “We’re number two”. Hilarious unless one looks at if objectively. Several other nations took it up: NO, we are number two. I liked to watch Deutsche Welle to get the European take on us. TRAGIC.

Countries rise to power and then die, often from internal rot. Civilizations rise and fall.
The climate change issue alone should send a message but the moneyed people’s influence on politics looks to me like like we are doomed. It may already be too late to stem the tide. Scientists say we have about a decade. I HOPE they are right. I would not bet on it.

Donald Trump and his billionaire buddies are letting America die.
The billionaires who make their money from fossil fuels have bought off Trump and Republicans so that they are denying climate change while a dozen states in the west burn and the Gulf Coast is repeatedly ravaged by hurricanes. Firefighters in California and Oregon are identifying the remains of homes where people died by the smell of burnt human flesh.
The billionaires who make their money screwing American students with almost $2 trillion in student loans bribed politicians in 2005 to make it illegal to declare bankruptcy on those loans. Across America, students are experiencing depression, despair, and suicide.
The billionaires who own millions of rental properties across the country are actively ignoring both legal requirements and moral-morality based requests, depending on the state, to prevent evictions and are today throwing people out of their homes in the middle of a pandemic.
The billionaires who own Fox news and some of our largest radio networks are facilitating lies about climate change and the coronavirus, both of which are killing people, while these billionaires live in their protected bubbles. They are also stoking racial violence by repeatedly portraying protesters calling for Black equality under the law as terrorists.
Massive tax cuts by Reagan, Bush and Trump have transferred fully $50 trillion from the homes and pockets of working people into the money bins and foreign bank accounts of the billionaire class since 1980. As a result, fewer than half of Americans are still in the middle class, and fear and rage increasingly dominate the American political landscape.
Using that despair and anger people are feeling as they watch their lives be wiped out, their homes destroyed, and their jobs vanish, Trump and the Republican party are fomenting violence and political instability by trying to scapegoat Black and Brown people. The growing Qanon movement on the right further asserts that “international Jewish bankers” like George Soros are behind at all, stoking anti-Semitism along with their garden-variety racism.
This all began in the 1980s with the so-called Reagan Revolution, when Reagan dropped the top tax rate from 74% to 25% and begin a vicious, scorched-earth campaign to destroy unions across the country while authoring NAFTA and other free trade agreements.
Reagan even championed the destruction of our public schools and the modern day Republican rejection of science on everything from the origin of the earth to climate change. He even empowered people like “Christian” billionaire Pat Roberts who argued that the earth is only 6000 years old and, at the peak of the AIDS crisis that Reagan refused to acknowledge, said the biggest crisis facing America was homosexuality.
If America is to recover from this hellscape that rightwing billionaires and their bought-off politicians have inflicted on us, it’s going to require a massive, nationwide awakening and a nonstop multi-year effort.
Reaganism needs to be ripped out by the root. His policies of minimizing science, privatizing our public schools, defunding social security and social welfare programs, ending support for infrastructure repair and construction, wiping out union protections for working people, and of transferring America’s wealth to the billionaire class must be reversed.
Until Reaganism is utterly destroyed, the crises engulfing America will simply get worse and worse.

My oldest daughter and family have lived in Italy for four years. According to my daughter, the Italians thinks Trump is a big joke. A clown. They wonder how Americans could have been so stupid as to elect Trump as president. My daughter tries hard not to talk to Italians about Trump because she becomes embarrassed and finds it very hard to explain why Trump does what does what he does.
I have a friend in Canada who continues to send me jokes about Trump. My Muslim friend in Malaysia says she will never visit the U.S. while Trump is president. She got a degree in engineering from a university in the U.S. My Australian friend prayed the night before Trump got elected, praying that he wouldn’t be elected.
I have a Chinese/Malaysian friend who thinks Trump is a joke.
The rotten right wing media is responsible for Trump’s possibly being re-elected. He never does anything wrong. People in other countries see him as he really is.
I have a good friend in Italy who says the same. But his punch line was, “But we had Berlusconi for years, so I guess we shouldn’t judge you too much.” Very funny. And sad.

Here is an opinion writer who is reminding us of how poorer countries are doing…extremely bad is the answer. It hadn’t occurred to me that now many young women will be married off and not be able to attend school. Extreme poverty is worsening.

A Cataclysm of Hunger, Disease and Illiteracy
A pandemic of suffering follows on the heels of Covid-19 in poor countries, and children suffer most.

We think of Covid-19 as killing primarily the elderly around the world, but in poor countries it is more cataclysmic than that.
It is killing children through malnutrition. It is leading more people to die from tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS. It is forcing girls out of school and into child marriages. It is causing women to die in childbirth. It is setting back efforts to eradicate polio, fight malaria and reduce female genital mutilation. It is leading to lapses in vitamin A distribution that will cause more children to suffer blindness and die.
The U.N. Population Fund warns that Covid-19 may lead to an additional 13 million child marriages around the world and to some 47 million women being unable to get access to modern contraception.
In short, a pandemic of disease, illiteracy and extreme poverty is following on the heels of this coronavirus pandemic — and it is hitting children hardest…
The number of people worldwide living in extreme poverty has risen by 37 million since Covid-19 hit, and it will rise another 25 million next year, according to estimates by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation…

Democrats have been promising riots for weeks if Trump wins the election.
In a speech supposedly condemning riots, Joe Biden threatened America that his voters would torch cities and unleash mayhem unless Americans elected Biden President.
The 2020 Presidential Election looks like it could be another close race.
President Trump says his internal polls put him on a path to victory.
And all hell is about to break loose as Democrats just made this threat of Civil War if Trump wins.
Now in a remarkable article in The Atlantic, liberal activists told Democrat Party propagandist Ronald Brownstein that if there were recounts after the election, Democrat voters would take to the streets and rampage through cities in riots the like of which the nation has never seen.
“Adam Green, a co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, another group participating in postelection planning, told me that he can ‘guarantee’ that ‘we will not have asymmetric warfare this time around. We won’t have litigation on the left and thuggery and election disruption on the right.’ If Trump tries to stop the counting of mail-in ballots after Election Day, or otherwise tries to short-circuit the results, Green predicts, the scale of protests would be that of ‘the Black Lives Matter protests on steroids, as people come into the streets to defend their democracy and to defend the counting of votes,’” Brownstein wrote.
