Trump has often expressed his opposition to the term limits for the presidency. He envies his friend Kim in North Korea, who is president for life. He envies his friends Vlad Putin, who just extended his president by 16 years, to 2036. Trump doesn’t see why the law or the Constitution should affect the longevity of his tenure in office, which he hopes to make eternal and then pass on to his progeny. His supporters like the idea of Trump now, Trump forever.
James Hohmann of the Washington Post describes Trump’s appearance last night:
President Trump surprised Republican delegates in Charlotte on Monday by appearing onstage after they officially nominated him for a second term. “Four more years,” the crowd chanted. Trump had another idea. “If you really want to drive them crazy, you say ‘12 more years,’” he said. So they did.
With that, the president launched into a 50-minute monologue that set the tone for the four-night convention, which he is stage-managing and will conclude Thursday night with a fireworks show over the Washington Monument.
After warning that Democrats are against guns, gasoline and God – in that order – the president accused his opponents of spying on him in 2016 and preparing to perpetrate massive voter fraud to win this November.
“They’re trying to steal the election,” the president said, offering no evidence. “Now we’re in courts all over the country, and hopefully we have judges that are going to give it a fair call. Because if they give it a fair call, we’re going to win this election. The only way they can take this election away from us is if this is a rigged election.”
Moments later, Trump boasted about the number of friendly judges he has appointed, including Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch. “Some presidents have had none,” he said. “I have had two in a relatively short period of time. I will tell you: The next one could have two, three, four and even five.”
A nightmare scenario.
I don’t know about Brett Kavanaugh, but I seriously doubt Neil Gorsuch was happy to hear such boasting. As usual, Trump confuses strains of authentic conservativism with unthinking Loyalty to Trump. CBK
apparently any comment that includes the name “Kavanaugh” goes into moderation.
“If you really want to drive them crazy, you say ‘12 more years,’” he said. So they did.
It’s fun to drive the snowflake liberals crazy…….with crazy chants that provide click bait for both liberal and conservative media outlets. Such a mature group.
beach Yes, Trump appeals to the adolescents among us. The problem is he is using “bait the democrats” to bait his adolescent base . . . and so he baits us all to be as uncivilized as he is.
It must be the loneliest place in the world . . . to think you are a god when you’re not. CBK
Correction: it45 doesn’t think it is a g-d, it thinks it IS G-d.
(Or Son of G-d.) Didn’t it45 state that it is “the annointed one?”
Please correct me if I’m wrong, here.
RETIRED: Either way, but I had forgotten about the anointed comment. . . . there are so many. CBK
Trump is NOT joking. If he has his way his Presidency will last for a life-time. He wants to be like Putin, Kim, Crown Prince, etc., etc. If he could pull it off he would like to be a King.
AGREE, and I do not put it past Congress to make this happen over time.
If Trump somehow managed to illegally circumvent and subvert the U.S. Constitution and end up with 12 more years in the White House, he would be the president of a divided country with red states fighting blue in America’s 2nd Civil War, and within each state, there would be blue or red factions fighting a war of resistance and sabotage.
It would be bloody. It would be brutal, and millions would die.
The U.S. military would fall apart just like it did before the 1st Civil War. LEss than half of the troops would probably fight for half and a little more than half would join the blue state military.
Who needs external threats when we’ve each other?!
Theme movie for a willfully ignorant electorate in a democracy:
“While You Were Sleeping.” CBK
got each other…one of these days I’ll learn how to proofead.
I’m immigrating.
Emigrating. Just being grating. Or an ingrate. Sorry, I’m gratuitous. 😜
That’s what it45 said a while back, about impeachment (although he was, what does that really mean?)–if he was impeached, there would be a Civil War.
I do not know how the auto spell thingy changed “Trump” to “half” before I posted my comment.
This is what my final sentence should have said:
Less than half of the troops would probably fight for Trump, and a little more than half would join the blue state military.
And, I should have added, that almost three-quarters of the officers would be with the blue army. Trump is very unpopular among the officers. In every Military Times poll since Trump was elected, 70% or more of the officers do not approve of Trump.
While it seems (the sources that have reported this are apparently biased for Trump) Trump has a higher popularity rate among veterans, he isn’t as popular with the active military.
I live in a military community. I have noticed that a number of commissioned officers are supporting Democrats, but the enlisted people seem to be supporting Trump. There is a retired Navy vet running against Matt Gaetz as a Democrat in the 1st Congressional District. He’s got my vote. https://www.newsweek.com/republican-matt-gaetzs-challenger-retired-us-navy-commander-says-rep-using-cold-war-tactics-1488361
A democracy of ignorant people cannot long remain a democracy. Our schools, insofar as they disdain teaching knowledge, are complicit. Any curriculum that’s all about “skills” is a curriculum that fosters ignorance, whose cure is knowledge, not “skills”. Our education leaders need to sharpen their minds and reassess their hallowed woolly bromides about “21st Century Skills” and other tenets of the current, unquestioned orthodoxy. There is a dangerous dearth of real erudition and wisdom among our education “elite”. How many of them know about alternatives to our progressive ed orthodoxy? How many know of the profound critics of progressive education –e.g. Demiaskevich, Kandel, Gramsci, Hirsch? This ignorance in our education leaders has led to the ignorance of our populace.
ponderosa Nicely said. Ditto for “job training,” which has been rung from the bell towers for over 25 years now. Even MANY parents seem to have accepted hook, line, and sinker, the idea that going to college is ALL about getting a job and making boatloads of money.
How else can our teachers and students think about “education” when capitalist-only thought negates community, entertainment disdains thoughtful pursuits, and happy-faces replace personal artistic expression, not to mention one’s sex life and orgasm in it as the high mark of quality human experience. . . . makes me want to go out and buy something pretty . . . or puke. CBK
Whoa, dark visions today, CBK! I suppose there must be parents buying into the fiction that a college degree = job + boatload of $$. Maybe I live in a bubble, but every parent I’ve known personally looks on it as a preventative for abject poverty, & guaranteeing nothing more than an insecure toehold on a series of jobs paying better than minimum wage, & hopefully, w/ ingenuity & luck, a modest career. My dark vision, I guess – so far confirmed by reality. But then, I’m mom to humanities types. Have to admit there are in fact three success stories among my sons’ three peer groups. (But not everyone can be an engineer).
So True. The thinking is why do boring things like learn states and state capitals when everyone has access to Google. Why learn cursive when everyone will be typing on a computer?
Factoid: Those non-sensical “21st Century Skills” were conjured by Ken Kay a lobbyist for the tech industry. He twice tried to get his meme and scheme into federal legislation. A lot of people signed on because the scheme included the word “creativity” not mentioned or supported by the Common Core. Trump’s hires are no longer required to have knowledge. They are (in theory) screened for skills.
June 26, 2020. Executive Order 13932 “Modernizing and Reforming the Assessment and Hiring of Federal Job Candidates.” This order drops college-level education as a requirement in all federal hiring.
“This order directs important, merit-based reforms that will replace degree-based hiring with skills-and competency-based hiring and will hold the civil service to a higher standard—ensuring that the individuals most capable of performing the roles and responsibilities required of a specific position are those hired for that position.” Degrees are not part of “a higher standard” for federal employment.
Agree, agree, agree.
Also, ponderosa, in the world of “ignorance is bliss.” Americans infatuated w/sports, tv, computers, I-Phones, Androids, movies, buying useless things/consumerism, etc., ad nauseum. Just like mask refusal, anti-vaxers, pretending covid will “just disappear.”
In the meantime, ALEC crept in (actually, didn’t have to creep) & drove the stake into the heart of America, leading us into…DINOs, neo-libs & the eventual election of it45.
Not.Paying.Attention.
People who seem obsessed w/ iPhones are not necessarily social-commenting & playing games, many are just constantly reading. My 31-yo updates my political examples routinely, always a step ahead of me on the news. How people use them is a consequence of their education and interests (or lack thereof).
Why would Kavanaugh be moderated? 🤔
WordPress began blocking all comments containing the word “Kavanaugh” during his hearings, and I think they are still doing it. For example, your comment was in moderation.
Oh wow. I had no idea. Thanks. 😐
Anything related to K needs to be moderated, especially his beer drinking and judicial decisions but also his name.
Then there were a few days where any comment with words ending in “ent” w*** into moderation 😀
Colbert’s little opening film of the convention is brilliant:
Thanks, GregB.
trumpsy dumpsy is CRAZED.
Love Colbert.
Thank you for posting this.
Much better way to watch the convention through Colbert’s commentary. lol! These people are scary but lol! How can anyone watch this and take these people seriously as legislators and leaders.

Ha!
According to a guest on Morning Joe a few years ago . . no one in his family expected /wanted him to win and he was just running to build his brand. They were shocked on the night of the election. I would love to know what she really feels and thinks.
This election is very high stakes for Trump. If he loses, he is either going to escape to a country with no extradition treaty with the U.S., or his is going to prison.
It sickens me that no one at the Democratic National Convention said this (If someone did, I didn’t hear him or her). It’s time to stop pulling the punches when talking about this vile, criminal, treasonous, racist, sexist, vulgar, utterly amoral cretin.
Yes. I embarrassingly admit that I watched some of “The Apprentice” years ago and was surprised at the time that Donald Trump was a little likable in the episodes. For the record I was appalled we he both started talking about Obama and then announced his candidacy.
People who know him talk about how his personality has changed. While he was always corrupt…. it’s at another level. He is being backed into a corner and saying and doing anything to get elected. It is very scary.
& Mary Trump said, in the Jane Fonda interview a commenter posted on a previous blog post, it45 gets worse & worse.
House panel to investigate Pompeo’s GOP convention speech
The secretary is believed to have recorded remarks from Jerusalem, further drawing criticism that the nation’s top diplomat was using the Holy City as a prop for partisan and political gain.
A House Democrat announced Tuesday that he is launching an investigation into Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s expected speech to the Republican National Convention, raising concerns that the move is an illegal violation of the Hatch Act and a breach of State Department regulations.
Pompeo is coming under scrutiny for taking time during official diplomatic travel in the Middle East to record remarks to be played at the GOP convention on Tuesday night….
The Hatch Act prohibits federal officials from participating in political activity while on official duty. The State Department has said that Pompeo is addressing the convention in his personal capacity and no Department resources were used for preparing or delivering the remarks.
But the House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrat has said the secretary’s actions directly violate his own instructions that State Department officials, specifically presidential and political appointees, are barred from engaging in political partisan activities abroad that are related to the U.S. elections…

The re-done Rose Garden looks DEAD.
as dead as Trump’s conscience is
I take it, Yvonne, that you are not a fan of the Red Sparrow’s white roses. LOL.
Revision: Trump took the sorting machines out of the post offices, the crab apple trees and red roses out of the Rose Garden, the decency out of the White House, the alliance out of our alliances, the intelligence out of the highest levels of our intelligence services, and the unitedness out of the United States.
Yep–it’s now the UnTIED States of America.

Have any of you seen Jane Fonda interview Mary Trump.
It’s the best interview I’ve seen re: Mary Trump.
It’s on YouTube.
I just watched a chunk of it after your post. It is worth watching. Thank you for recommending.
She talks about the change in his personality and connects it to the tremendous stress he is under. As a businessman he could say whatever he wanted and was treated well by the press. Now he is being held accountable for knowing things he has no idea about.
It can be found in the comments of one of Diane’s previous posts.
I started watching it, but it’s an hour, so will finish later.
To whoever posted it: thanx!
Yvonne: I’m just starting to watch the interview. Thanks for telling us about it.

Just realized that would be 84 dog years. Sheesh.
And please remember, the thousand-year Reich lasted a little over 12 years (a little over 84 dog years, that is).
While Beau Biden was serving in Iraq and winning a bronze star medal, Trump’s sons were stealing money from a charity for children with cancer.
For some of these speakers at the Trump National Convention, a “convention bump” appears to be a line of cocaine before the speech.
I have worked in the past as a speech teacher and speech coach. I typically advised my students not to YELL THE ENTIRE SPEECH AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS AS THOUGH YOU WERE URSULA THE SEA WITCH CONCLUDING HER RENDITION OF “POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS.”
I just tuned in and I think we are in trouble. Their dog and pony show is calmer tonight and includes immigrants (not wearing masks by the way) being sworn in as citizens of the U.S. I need to switch channels.
This convention is very slickly produced. A person from Mars would think, watching it, that Donald Trump is a champion of immigrants, working people, women, the poor, the sick, and so on. Who is the man they are celebrating? Certainly not the one in the Oval Office. Melania Trump delivered her speech tonight extremely well.
Yes, she did. Some of her words were touching and seemed heartfelt (other than when she mentioned her husband). I was routing for her to say… “so vote for Joe Biden.” It was very misleading.
Like Joy Reid just commented, it was staged to make them look like monarchs coming out of their living room to their personal back yard.
I was rooting for her to say . . .“so vote for Joe Biden.”
LMAO!!! Exactly what I was thinking!!!
I heard that ’12 more years” and wondered if anyone else did. He says his thoughts OUT LOUD.
The man has no editor. However, the convention is HIGHLY edited, curated, slickly produced to present a different person than the one who now slithers through the White House.
Bob I cannot watch it. Whenever I see his face on the television, I cannot change channels fast enough. Ditto for those who are fabricating reality. I really do feel as if I am watching a horrible accident in slow motion when I hear the constant lies and expressions of contempt and hate. CBK
Clearly, there are some people around Trump who understand what normal human and humane emotion looks like, and they have carefully crafted this week-long commercial to make it appear as though Trump has those, though he has a difficult time showing them, even in the few seconds allotted to doing so, in the staged events with Trump that they have scattered throughout this. They can only win four more years for Trump by trying to present him as someone he is not–someone who cares about anyone but himself. But this is a tall order, pulling that off, because Trump’s Malignant Pathological Narcissism is so clearly evident in his actual life and in his actual presentation of self.
I started to watch this and couldn’t stand it. She obviously knows where her money is coming from. She is one who lies and it doesn’t matter. “…restore the promise of our future”. With dimwitted, bigoted, misogynistic, xenophobic, racist Donald?

The Memo: GOP seeks to detoxify Trump at convention
One night at a convention will hardly be enough to nullify memories of the president’s racially inflammatory rhetoric, his allegation that Mexico was sending “rapists” to the United States, or his comments about women captured on the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape.
Clearly, his image with his detractors is set in stone. But the second night of the convention, even more than the first, seemed aimed at trying to defang some of the more toxic perceptions that cling to Trump, even among ideologically non-aligned voters…
On issues of race, in particular, it is questionable based on polls whether Team Trump can realistically hope to boost support among Black voters. It seems at least as likely that their efforts are geared toward reassuring white moderates that they are not aligning themselves with racism if they back Trump in November…
Melania Trump’s speech went beyond just paying tribute to what she sees as her husband’s support for women. It also offered sympathy to the victims of the coronavirus pandemic — something the president has done only sparingly — and acknowledged the historic scars of slavery and racial injustice…
However, her speech, as well as an earlier address from Tiffany Trump, the younger of the president’s two daughters, might at least have given any remaining undecided voters a different picture of the president.
“My father does not run away from challenges — even in the face of outright hatred — because fighting for America is something he will sacrifice anything for,” Tiffany Trump said. “He dreams big dreams for our country — and he is relentless at achieving them.”…

CBK,
You can be sure they signed non-disclosure agreements in exchange for money. That’s the Trump way.
Diane Non-disclosure agreements . . . I have no doubt. CBK
I understand she said that we should expect honesty from our president. A very high bar for Donald.
I posted this once before, but I believe this is an honest appraisal of Donald Trump. Mary Trump is a psychologist who has known him her whole life. GREAT VIDEO!! It makes me sick that the GOP Convention is made up of people willing to lie to get Trump re-elected.
I also can’t stand to watch Trump bloviate.

I understand fully, Catherine. It’s excruciating to watch. I have been forcing myself. Don’t know how much longer I can do it.
In 2017, Trump directed all VA hospitals to hang his photo. U.S. Rep. Brian Mast (R-Florida), a graduate of South Christian High School, defended the WH directive on Fox.
Mast is in the news this week for exchanges between him and his campaign manager, Rocco LeDonni, which occurred in 2009. LeDonni posted a photo of his vacation in South Africa and Mast replied, “I hope you hook up with 15 15 year olds over there…it’s legal there right.”
Mast received campaign donations from an indicted Rudy Guliani associate.
In typical activities of congressional members, Mast gave Congressional Medals to Cardinal Newman High School students. The same article that described the awards expressed pride that a Newman student was selected as a Mast intern.
Cardinal Newman school was the subject of a puff piece at Redefine Ed – “The New Definition of Public Education”, which included the spokesperson’s boast, the school is a “safe, disciplined environment.”
Pam Keith is Mast’s opponent in 2020.
In 2018, Ballotpedia reported Mast’s backers included Jonathan Hague, listed as the CEO of Charter Schools USA, former Bannon benefactor, Robert Mercer, Walmart, …
Mast thinks tax dollars should follow the student to their school choice- e.g. religious, private.

Is Donald Trump fit to hold the office of President of the United States? #UNFIT presents an eye-opening analysis of the behavior, psyche, condition and stability of Donald Trump. It takes a sociological look at the electorate that chose him, and the collective effect he is having on our culture and institutions. During the 2016 campaign, mental health professionals felt policy-bound from speaking publicly. Now, after years of observation, for the first time ever, they have decided enough is enough.

If individuals and organizations benefit from a Trump administration, messaging about his unfitness has limited impact. The vested-interest religious are on record as saying so.
Seeing or reading media content that exposes the gains for religious employers and follow-up ads and videos aimed at disrupting the voting of that protected segment might have impact. However, don’t anticipate it happening because of the feared knee-jerk tribalism which in itself reflects the power of American theocracy.
Christian Socialism 3-9-2020- Interesting article about unrepresented medical workers at religious hospitals during the time of Covid.
I think the psychologists are confusing things here.
Narcissism and outright sociopathology are not something most people view positively but whether they render one ” unfit” to be President is quite another matter.
If one simply looks at the actions of many of the Nation’s Presidents to further American “interests” (whether it be to work, sell, rape and otherwise exploit African Americans, exterminate Native Americans, kill SE Asians, Nicaraguans, Guatemalans, Chileans, Afghanis, Iraquis, Libyans and other people throughout the world), it’s hard to conclude that narcissistic and sociopathological tendencies do not actually make one MORE (not less) fit to be President.
And it’s hard to avoid the idea that this is a mere accident. The President was certainly NOT afforded so much power by framers of the Constitution like Alexander Hamilton (whom everyone seems to believe was a democrat for the common folk, based on the play) so he would be “nice”.
And it is also no accident that the Presidency has attracted so many narcissists and outright sociopaths and that so many truly “nice” people who run don’t get elected — simply don’t have a chance because they are not willing to sacrifice their integrity to do what it takes.
In my opinion (and this is not a clinical assessment because I am not a psychologist) anyone (especially a psychologist) who actually believes otherwise is just delusional.
SomDAM Well, you are in good company. Plato himself says the same thing . . . the problem with political office is that the person who is both intelligent and who cherishes their own integrity doesn’t want to hold office or have power. They already know what’s important and THAT’s not it. CBK

Laws and ethics never matter to Trump or the GOP. It NEVER ENDS.
Park Service under fire for role in GOP convention
08/27/20 06:00 AM EDT
“Federal appropriations laws make it clear government dollars are meant to be used to serve the American public, not to help political office holders remain in power, and that appears to be what this video and what this event on the Mall is designed to do,” Donald Sherman, deputy director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), told The Hill.
Trump has repeatedly pushed for fireworks displays near national monuments for various events, such as this year’s Fourth of July celebration at Mount Rushmore. But ethics experts say timing this week’s fireworks with a major primetime campaign speech is the most clear cut example yet that Trump seeks political benefits from using government property as a backdrop.
“Enlisting the Park Service to put on a show for the Republican National Convention is another deviation, even from his own past practice, and a bridge too far in using federal resources for political activity,” Sherman said.
The Republican National Convention has said it will reimburse NPS for the costs of the display, but a heavily redacted copy of the permit makes it unclear what those expenses are and how they were calculated…
The agency did not respond to questions on the total cost or the ethical issues raised…
