Portland, Oregon, is the scene of the most frightening series of events in the nation today. Governors may call upon the National Guard. The President, under extraordinary circumstances, may send in troops to enforce the law, as when President Eisenhower sent troops to Little Rock to enforce a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.
The armed personnel in Portland were not called in by the governor. They are not there to enforce the law or a court decision. They are there to harass and bully American citizens who are exercising their Constitutional right to assemble peaceably. They are there by order of Trump and Barr to help raise the “law and order” issue for the fall election. Trump has announced that he intends to send his personal federal police force into other cities, to “pacify” them.
We cannot normalize what is happening. It is highly irregular and probably illegal. It is wrong. Trump will stop at nothing to improve his poll numbers. He has no regard for law or the Constitution. He is ignorant of both. We are moving in uncharted waters. Step by step, we are sinking into authoritarianism, fascism.
Dana Milbank wrote today in the Washington Post:
In Portland, Ore., federal police use batons, tear gas and rubber bullets on moms in bicycle helmets.
Unidentified federal officers, defying duly elected state and city leaders, throw civil rights demonstrators into unmarked vans without charges. President Trump’s acting homeland security secretary, Chad Wolf, says his agents “go out and proactively arrest individuals.”
That’s so much easier than waiting for people to do something illegal before you lock them up!
The administration justifies the extraordinary disregard of constitutional protections by calling the demonstrators “violent anarchists” who have made “efforts to start fires at the Hatfield Federal Courthouse.” Trump says that the demonstrators “hate our country” and that “we must protect Federal property.”
Anarchists in Oregon who hate their country are trying to set fires and destroy federal property? Hmmm.
Steven and Dwight Hammond, also from Oregon, were convicted of arson for a fire that burned 139 acres of federal property in the state. A witness testified that Steven Hammond handed out matches with instructions to “light up the whole country” after his hunting party illegally slaughtered animals on federal land. Their imprisonment sparked an armed takeover of federal property in Oregon for 41 days in 2016 by dozens of militia-affiliated gunmen.
And what did Trump think of these arsonists who destroyed federal property and wanted to burn down America? Why, he pardoned them in 2018, calling them “devoted family men” and “respected contributors to their local community” for whom “justice is overdue.”
We have seen this pattern over and over.
In Washington’s Lafayette Square, across the street from the White House, federal police operating under the administration’s command fired gas and projectiles at peaceful demonstrators to clear the way for a presidential photo op outside a church. But when armed militants poured into the state Capitol in Michigan, brandishing their weapons in the legislative chamber to intimidate lawmakers (some of whom felt the need to don bulletproof vests) over public health restrictions, Trump declared that the gunman were “very good people” and that the state’s Democratic governor should “make a deal” with them.
Now Trump is decrying a supposed absence of law and order in Chicago and other cities run by Democrats (“worse than Afghanistan,” he said) and is threatening to overpower those cities, too, with armed federal agents. But when a Missouri couple came out of their home shouting at nonviolent racial justice demonstrators, pointing a pistol and brandishing a rifle at them, Trump called it “a disgrace” that they might face charges. Never mind that it’s a felony in Missouri to exhibit “any weapon readily capable of lethal use in an angry or threatening manner.”
In Trump’s America, it seems, the First Amendment applies only to those exercising the Second Amendment. Unarmed demonstrators pose a threat to “law and order.” But if you’re carrying a gun, you should feel free to threaten your elected representatives, menace civil rights demonstrators or do what you like to federal property.
Trump’s pretext for overriding state and local leaders with federal firepower is the racial justice demonstrators’ supposed violence. Though the majority of protesters have been peaceful, a few are indeed violent — you can view them on Fox News — and they deserve condemnation. But Trump is fomenting violence in the service of fueling a culture war he hopes will salvage his reelection. “It’s a choice between the law and order and patriotism and prosperity, safety offered by our movement, and the anarchy and chaos and crime,” he declared at a telerally this past week.
Or so he would like it to be.
Oregon’s Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat, said Trump’s “dictatorship”-style use of “secret police” was “adding gasoline to a fire” that had been dying. “The situation had been improving over the past several weeks,” she told NPR, and “their presence here substantially escalated the situation.”
But escalation is clearly Trump’s aim when he threatens to send federal police into more American cities. He needs to frighten Americans into embracing federal police taking up arms against American citizens — and Americans taking up arms against each other.
On Tuesday, for example, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany described Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the Missouri couple who threatened demonstrators with guns, as being menaced by “violent” protesters who “trespassed,” threatened to kill them and “burn down the house,” but not before moving into the house and “taking a shower.” Video of the affair shows peaceful marchers on the sidewalk, walking past the agitated and gun-toting McCloskeys, on their way to demonstrate outside the mayor’s nearby house.
“The prosecutor apparently thinks her job isn’t to keep us safe from criminals, but to keep the criminals safe from us,” Mark McCloskey told Fox News on Monday.
What a perfect distillation of Trumpian justice! Nonviolent civil rights demonstrators are the “criminals” — and the people who threaten them with guns are the victims.
I agree this is extremely urgent. Obviously we will vote in November to stop this, but November seems a long way off. What can we do now?
I would like to see state and local leaders arrest them. Lock them up.
After the November election, Trump stays president for 77 more days until January 20, 2021.
77 more days!!!!
RBG must hang on until Jan. 20.
This is such BS.
Not sure what the referent of “This” is here.

Exactly
Trump is deliberately baiting peaceful demonstrators because he wants them to become violent while he is also encouraging his violent racist and fascist followers to attack the peaceful demonstrators, too.

LOL. Exactly
Throughout history, civilization has been such a fragile veneer….and we’re on very thin ice right now.
There’s a sort of bravery being called upon from everyday citizens at this moment in the U.S. that certainly has not existed in my lifetime.
I’ve always viewed this blog (and you readers) as a lifeline at school. Now I see this site as lifeline -plain and simple. It’s people like you who will help save this nation.
Maybe it’s time to shut down the DHS? Do we really need the Patriot Act anymore?
It’s time to vote out the Trump administration and all congressional Republicans. Once the democrats are empowered, it will be time to have a debate on shutting down the DHS.
ArtsSmart, I think you support Trump, right? I don’t recall you ever saying that you want to vote out Trump because he is an awful president. But if you do agree that Trump is a danger to democracy, then please feel free to correct me.
No I do not support Trump and hope that Biden wins in 2020. I welcome a return to normalcy, but I’m certain that corporate control of the two party system will continue under a Biden administration which will lead to more bad outcomes for our country in the future.
Thank you, I am sorry I misunderstood your view.
I think it is more accurate to say the corporations control the Republican party and they have too much influence on the Democratic party. I’m sure you agree that corporations didn’t “control” the election of AOC or Jamaal Bowman,or Elizabeth Warren and Biden was certainly not their choice. And corporations desperately wanted Trump to win in 2016 because the worst thing for corporate control would have been a Democrat appointing 2 justices who would have repealed Citizens United instead of lifetime appointments for Gorsuch and Kavanaugh and a majority of federal judgeships. Corporations “control” Democrats by defeating them and making sure Republicans have power.
I agree. Rather than “anymore” I would argue we never needed it. Starting with use of the word “homeland”–what’s wrong with the word “nation?”–an authoritarian term if there ever was one, and ending with the acronym PATRIOT which, to remind, stands for “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism.” Isn’t that “national security” and didn’t we have that for quite some time? It was and is nothing more than a tool to incite fear and drive profits for budding, and now thriving, “homeland security” businesses.
From the beginning I thought it was just a little too reminiscent of Das Vaterland …
When are we allowed to point out that this is the beginning of the end of democracy without being attacked by people (mostly on the right, but also some on the left) who still don’t think Trump is a danger?
There is only one way to have a progressive future — vote out each and every Republican and make them powerless. It may already be too late if Trump gets his 3rd far right lifetime Supreme Court Justice and Barr’s DOJ starts imprisoning people like AOC and her squad and all progressives for being “enemies” of democracy.
The current Republican party definition of democracy is the same as Putin’s – it is whatever keeps you in power. The reason that some old style, out of power Republicans are joining democrats and progressives in voting for Biden is not because they like Biden’s policies – they don’t – but because they value democracy.
This isn’t an election in which voters refuse to vote for any candidate who endorses Medicare for All instead of Medicare for All who want it. This isn’t an election in which voters refuse to vote for any candidate who endorses free college tuition for families who earn under $150,000 instead of free college tuition for every family regardless of how rich they are. Those are meaningless disagreements. The only thing this election is about is democracy.
It may already be too late.
Imagine the nation that Trump and Barr envision, one with vast detention facilities for citizens and kangaroo courts and a jackbooted militia that tramples, beats, kills, and imprisons anyone who asserts civil liberties, one in which “Democracy” is a farcical term, as in the “Democratic” “People’s” Republic of Korea. The more repressive it gets, the more the jingoistic terminology and symbols will be used–patriotism, liberty, freedom, democracy, and the more those terms will mean the opposite of what they used to mean. Yes, we are asserting the “freedom” of police to kill POC, of shopkeepers and schools not to serve non-Christians or foreigners or black or brown people or LGBTQX persons. Our beautiful Confederate flag. Our monument to Nathan Bedford Forrest, perpetrator of the Fort Pillow Massacre. Our space force drones and Amazon facial recognition technology to spy on dissenters. The Trumpentroopers, with Bill Barr at their head, playing the bagpipes. The Ministry of Love and the Thought Police. Fascism wrapped in the American flag and carrying a cross. What is the difference, exactly, between Orwell’s boot on the face and the knee on the neck? What is the difference between Trump’s secret police and Stalin’s?
Everyone should vote, but if it’s not for Putin, you die. CBK

I think a much better comparison to Vietnam (Which my father served in during the Tet offensive) would be the 19 yr failed war in Afghanistan. Trump is trying to draw down US troops there, but Liz Cheney and democrats have reached across the isle to take away a president’s power to end this failed war with the Crow/Cheney amendment. I think the world would be a much better place if congress would to make it harder for a president to send in federal troops to US cities and much easier to end failed wars in foreign lands.
Here’s a clear idea of what Trump is planning in his invasion of cities led by Democrats.https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/889v34/trump-is-sending-secret-police-to-american-cities-heres-what-we-know
I desperately hope this backfires as the Wall of Moms in yellow shirts linked arms and stood against the storm troopers. They got tear gassed for that. They weren’t attacking anyone. They weren’t at all violent. They were non-threatening. Why did the goon squad gas them? Why did they tear down Riot Ribs? Why did they beat Christoper David? This is supposed to get Trump re-elected. What does that say about his “base”? My grand daughter was visiting her family in Portland last night. She came home today spitting mad and trying to make sense of the senseless cruelty. She was crying, repeating, why? why? The Wall of Moms cheered her up. The people defending themselves with leaf blowers and umbrellas and pool noodles did too.
Mary Bardmess My heart is with her. This is our “Jack boots on the driveway” moment. CBK
The district attorney for Philadelphia has warned that he will arrest Trump’s storm troopers if federal agents try storm trooper tactics in the city. I think Trump is trying to flex his law and order muscles to appeal to his base. It is a way for him to project his “strong man” image, and that is his Trump brand. He is hoping it will detract attention from from his failed Covid response.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-22/philly-d-a-threatens-to-arrest-federal-agents
I would love to see NYPD and NY state police arrest these marauders if they come to NYC.
YES!!!! The only appropriate response.
I have a very similar comment in moderation below.
retired teacher,
You are so correct.
Very frightening. Gestapo type behavior of the 1930’s! Is that what he is building up to deal with the possibility of being voted out of the presidency? Will he not stop at anything? Shirley R. Rausher
I read Mary Trump’s book and it’s frightening.
tRump is dangerous and very sick person.
Vote as if your life depends on it as it may very well be true.
Here’s my paranoid take on this. This is an audition to determine who will be assigned to White House in late October to protect the Idiot Dear Leader when he declares a national emergency, with the blessing of the Attorney General and the Majority Leaders of the House and the Senate to either cancel the election or nullify it. Our history is fast becoming a dystopian novel. I honestly hope I will be considered a nutcase for thinking this when November rolls around.
Greg, the majority leader in the House is not a Republican.
typo, Minority Leader and Whip, same sentiment
Greg knows this. He was doubtless writing in haste and in fury. I completely understand that.
What’s “fury” in exponential terms? I could yell it here: https://www.afar.com/magazine/iceland-invites-the-world-to-scream-it-out
You do not have to go to Iceland to “scream” your fury. The U.S. has plenty of wilderness areas.
I had a similar thought that DJT may be working on trying to justify martial law in the fall, but I hope the governors take a stand.
What Trump is doing is beyond dangerous. Even if he doesn’t turn the country into a fascist autocracy, he risks inciting a civil war or a bloody revolution. I cannot believe this is happening in the United States of America.
First they came for the immigrants, and I did not speak up because I was not an immigrant. Then they came for George Floyd, and I did not speak up because I was not Black. Then they came for the schools, and I did not speak up because I did not have a child in school. Then they came for the protesters, and I did not speak up because I was self-quarantined. Then they came for the Jews, you know they come for the Jews eventually, and I did not speak up because I was agnostic. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak up for me.
Believe it, read Joseph Roth’s The Spiderweb to see how these manipulated individuals become part of a paramilitary group to crush dissent.
Thanks for the tip, Greg. Ordering a copy, though I think I know how this story goes, alas.
Thank you, Diane, for this post. I was beginning to think I was crazy–in some surreal nightmare–because this was happening and there was so little outrage. The line has been crossed into outright fascism. Hitler and his Sturmabteilung, or brownshirts. Stalin and his NKVD. Eric Honecker and his Ministerium für Staatsicherhei, or Stasi. Saddam Hussein and his Directorate of General Security. Nicolae Ceaușescu and his Securitate. Fascist secret police.
The governors in these states should call out the National Guard to confront these unconstitutional thugs and arrest them.
“[D]o not forget this, Winston— always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face— forever. ” –George Orwell, 1984
Trump, Barr: 1984 was not meant as a policy manual.
Not that Trump can or would read this book
Bob,
I don’t know why this comment was in moderation.
I don’t know how to refer to the invasion force. They are not military.
Maybe as you say, paramilitary.
Brown shirts works too.
Guessing moderation has gone off the rails again, Diane.
Poor Diane. I’ve had three things in moderation this morning. The one that is still in moderation was from Fox telling us never has a president done so much to protect the American people from dangerous criminals.
I am very sorry. I had lunch and when I opened the comments, I discovered that there were 22 comments in moderation, all from people who have commented here many times.

Diane’s union thugs. Oh, Lord!!! Rolling on the floor laughing.

Was it you, Speduktr, who suggested that this be renamed the John Lewis Bridge (rather than after Ku Klux Klan leader Pettus? What an excellent idea.
I don’t think so, Bob although I am certainly in agreement with those who have a better claim on that suggestion.
I wish I could join them. They march in the spirit of John Lewis, the anonymous heroes of Tiananmen Square, and so many demonstrations of the righteous throughout history.

Ooh, after posting that, I am probably going to be carted away by the Trumpstappo.
He’s makin’ a list. He’s checkin’ it twice. . . .
Nope. They did NOT go home. Instead, the largest number ever in 55 days turned out on the streets. Like the church photo-op, moving in Barr’s anarchists backfired. Barr and Trump spend too much time in an echo chamber of their own making.
Trump stuffed Barr inside his own brain and Barr loves it in that padded cell.
Sorry, meant to link instead to this. BTW, Ted Wheeler, Mayor and also head of Portland’s police, was among those tear-gassed last night.
Lloyd, are you saying Trump has a brain cell? Not too sure about that.
The brain cells inside Trump’s skull do not belong to him. They belong to the same snake that convinced Eve to pluck the apple from the forbidden tree and use it to bribe Adam to disobey God. That snake is coiled between Trump’s ears, and it ate whatever brain cells were there a long time ago.
In our pet keeping years we had cats. After stumbling over one of them I’m sure, my husband proclaimed they all shared one neuron

This isn’t the time to withdraw. Bring grandma, bring the rest of the moms on your block, bring picnic food. Carry signs peacefully, with beatific smiles– & don’t damage any property.
Trump’s unmarked militarized thugs will not be stopped by peaceful, smiling people having a picnic during a protest. If Trump’s storm troopers think they are protestors lawfully practicing their 1st amendment rights, Trump’s hitmen will attack and drag some of those peacefully, unarmed people off in unmarked vans while clubbing, shooting, and tear-gassing the rest.
The only part of the U.S. Constitution Trump likes is the 2nd Amendment, but only for his deplorable, racist, ignorant supporters. If you do not support Trump, you are a domestic terrorist.
Your headline, Diane, is spot on: Trump’s invasion of Portland
So I’m assuming it’s Trump and his lackeys delineating between anarchism and legitimate protest? As Trump and his treasonous alliterates attempt to transform the US into a Soviet-styled fascist dictatorship I’m reminded of all the work Barr did with Russian banks prior to his fawning audition memo…
Welcome to the World of Proactive Arrests
Yup, for obviously, those protesting police violence are committing thought crime, and the way to deal with protests of police violence is with police violence.
I don’t think I could ever be a reporter covering one of these administration “news” conferences. I would have to practice “strongly” not bursting out in derisive laughter. “Proactive policing!?” Give me a break.
Well said, Speduktr. Me, too.
Trump the Coronavirus warrior in chief is back now that the laughter over “inject disinfectant” has died down.
Trump is truly a frightening creep. Think of how he will use these same troops when he loses the election. He’ll call out his loyal followers to start shooting at protestors. This man is VILE!!
VILE is an acronym for EVIL.
LOL! Great, Diane!
It’s taken me 30+ minutes to dig the term “anagram” out of my brain. That’s what you mean, right?
Though V.I.L.E., in reference to Trump, is an acronym for Vlad’s Idiot Lying to Everyone
Gun sales are soaring. In addition to Chicago, Trump’s troops will be hitting on Albuquerque. The link below may explain why.
Trump’s troops are aligned with the NRA’s desire to arm as many people as possible. Barr is on record as supporting what should be regarded as a police state. Trumpsters have justified these moves as a response to claims that “we should defund the police.” That slogan has helped Trump gin up his “proactive” stance in support of police and also claim his use of armed troops in cities run by democrats is a case supporting local police. https://www.firearmspolicy.org/this_week_june_27_2020

Black Lives Matter
This comes from TIME. There was no link.
BY COLLEEN LONG AND JILL COLVIN / AP JULY 22, 2020 4:59 PM EDT
(WASHINGTON) — President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he will send federal agents into Chicago and Albuquerque to help combat rising crime, expanding the administration’s intervention in local enforcement as he runs for reelection under a “law-and-order” mantle.
Using the same alarmist language that he has employed in the past to describe illegal immigration, Trump painted Democrat-led cities as out of control and lashed out at the “radical left,” even though criminal justice experts say the increase in violence in some cities defies easy explanation.
“In recent weeks there has been a radical movement to defend, dismantle and dissolve our police department,” Trump said at a White House event, blaming the movement for “a shocking explosion of shootings, killings, murders and heinous crimes of violence.”
“This bloodshed must end,” he said. “This bloodshed will end.”
The decision to dispatch federal agents to American cities is playing out at a hyper-politicized moment when Trump is trying to show that he stands with law enforcement and depict Democrats as weak on crime. With less than four months to go before Election Day, Trump has been serving up dire warnings that the violence would worsen if his Democratic rival Joe Biden is elected in November, as he tries to win over voters who could be swayed by that message.
In trying to explain the spike in violence, experts point to the unprecedented moment the country is living through — a pandemic that has killed more than 140,000 Americans, historic unemployment, stay-at-home orders, a mass reckoning over race and police brutality, intense stress and even the weather. Compared with other years, crime is down overall…
The question on Twitter: Albuquerque? Why?
Because it’s there?
Dem gov? Check. Majority Dem state house and senate? Check. Dem mayor? Check. Voted for Hillary Clinton? Check. Lots of Brown people to demonize (including Native Americans)? Check. Easy to mischaracterize because it’s one of the least visited states of other Americans and relatively isolated? Check. Send in the clown-like troops? You betcha!
I do not follow Twitter, but here is one reason why Trump is targeting Albuquerque.
Begin quote: The mayor of Albuquerque, New Mexico, has just issued a declaration claiming that all of the city’s parks are now “school premises,” forbidding law-abiding gun owners from carrying while they enjoy the public spaces that they pay for.
State law allows municipalities to assert that properties used for school events are school premises, so Albuquerque believes that this means they can indefinitely ban gun owners from entering parks by issuing an instruction declaring ALL of these spaces as school premises. Here’s the fatal flaw in their argument: first, the statute they’re referring to specifies that the grounds in question are only school premises while they are being used as such – not generally. Second, the state constitution forbids municipalities from passing rules or ordinances which affect the right to bear arms, and I may just be a small town constitutional lawyer, but I’m pretty sure that telling people they can’t carry firearms in open, public grounds runs afoul of that provision. End quote Source: https://www.firearmspolicy.org/this_week_june_27_2020
I think that Trump has targeted Albuquerque to please the NRA and to target the Mayor who is clearly not a fan of gun-toting citizens in public parks or fond of the state constitution which strips municipalities from having any say on “the right to bear arms.” Here is the relevant portion of the state constitution: Article II, § 6 of the Constitution of New Mexico provides:
No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes, but nothing herein shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons. No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms.
There are nuances in how this law has been interpreted and enforce. See the further discussion at https://lawcenter.giffords.org/state-right-to-bear-arms-in-new-mexico/ and see also the history of the Gifford’s law center at https://lawcenter.giffords.org/about/history/
As usual, Laura, you provide the facts. Thank you again (and again and again for past and future clarifications)! Can we now agree that the NRA is a major driver of the actual deep state? 🤯
So inspiring
As bad as Portland is (and it is nightmarish) can you even begin to imagine Chicago? My son lives there and I’m truly worried like never before. This is just wrong on every level. When this CV19 started this is the LAST thing I thought I’d have to worry about.
My husband always says that men need to be chastised by older women. Too bad older women don’t get together (“Wall of Grandmas”???) and stand in front of the Wall of Moms. What would these federal officers do? Would they gas them? Too bad there’s a pandemic. 😦
I told my husband that I might have to participate in a wall of grandmas if the fed storm troopers get carried away in Chicago. I wondered what they might do if faced with a wall interspersed with canes, walkers and wheelchairs. What a photo op!
Ha!!!!! That’s beautiful!!!!
And now even the Mayor of Portland was tear gassed. This whole thing is terrifying.

Trump and Fox are doing a great job of putting out ___________. I don’t have the words, at least not decent ones.
This is what Fox ‘news’ is saying:

President Trump showed once again Wednesday that he is the law-and-order president by announcing that he is sending 100 federal law enforcement officers to Chicago and additional officers to other cities to deal with an alarming increase in violent crime. This was a wise move that will save lives.
I have worked in law enforcement for six presidents, and none has done as much as President Trump to protect the American people from dangerous criminals and to support our brave law enforcement officers.
The president understands that nearly all law enforcement officers do an outstanding job. He knows it would be terribly harmful to defund or abolish law enforcement agencies because of the actions of the tiny minority of officers who engage in brutality and criminal conduct…
Contrary to the claims of his left-wing critics, President Trump does not want to prevent lawful peaceful protests, which are protected by our Constitution…
The president is sending in highly trained federal law enforcement officers from the FBI; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Drug Enforcement Administration; U.S. Marshals Service; and Department of Homeland Security.
These federal officers are trained to enforce the law. They are trained in the Constitution, especially the Fourth Amendment. This amendment provides that the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures….

Trump and DeVos’s Plan to Reopen Schools Hides a Sinister Agenda
July 23, 2020
Turning schools into hotbeds of infection is in line with Betsy DeVos’s plan to undermine the public school system.
Parents of 51 million school-age children in the U.S. are facing an agonizing choice — whether to risk exposing their children to the coronavirus in public school classrooms this fall, or to sacrifice their children’s intellectual, social and emotional development by keeping them home for “online learning” via the web, which even before the pandemic was judged not very effective.
To make the choice even more difficult, President Trump and his education secretary, billionaire Betsy DeVos, have threatened to withhold federal funds from any school that does not open its classrooms fully in the fall. Both Trump and DeVos insist face-to-face teaching is perfectly safe, which health scientists say is not true.
Trump and DeVos are adamant. On “Fox News Sunday” on July 12, DeVos said, “There’s nothing in the data that suggests that kids being in school is in any way dangerous.”…
Science does not support claims of perfect safety. Schools are likely high-contact zones. Most schools cannot presently afford regular disinfection; many students and their parents may object to mandatory masks (38 percent of U.S. adults don’t wear masks when they leave the house); certainly not all kids will remain six feet apart. COVID-19 can definitely infect some children, some of whom can pass it on to their families, teachers, school staff and other children.
States test and report COVID cases differently, but Bloomberg Newsreports that, in Florida, about a third of all children tested have been positive for COVID-19; in California it’s 8.4 percent; Mississippi, 9.4 percent; Arizona and Washington state, 11 percent. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 3.3 million seniors age 65 and older — prime candidates for serious illness — live with a school-age child. Furthermore, another Kaiser study concluded that one-quarter of all teachers (1.47 million people) are in danger of developing serious illness if infected with coronavirus…

DJT has always had such a sharp ear for the fears of his base. His ignorant dittoheads call in periodically to CSPAN’s daily a.m. Wash Journal show in their quavery old-man/ old-lady voices– the ones that are with us in every generation, declaring society is going to hell in a hand-basket. The tiniest street protest triggers them. They’ve been on high alert since Feb ’17 when Berkley students set student union on fire looking to prevent Milo Yiannopoulos from speaking, & believe campuses have been on fire ever since. Likewise, as far as this cohort is concerned, every BLM protest nationwide since 5/31 features the looting/ vandalism seen briefly in NYC. Neighborhood kids could organize & take to sidewalks with signs demanding a raise in the price of lemonade-stand drinks, & they’d be hiding behind their venetian blinds dialing 911.
If you need some comic relief ad a bit of hope, here it is from an unlikely source : Masha Gessen.
WHITE HOUSE DENIES STEPHEN MILLER’S GRANDMOTHER DIED OF COVID-19 The Trump administration rejected assertions that White House adviser Stephen Miller’s 97-year-old grandmother died of the coronavirus after his uncle reported earlier this month that she had fallen victim to COVID-19. “This morning my mother, Ruth Glosser, died of the late effects of COVID-19 like so many thousands of other people; both young and old,” Miller’s uncle, David Glosser wrote on Facebook on July 4. But when asked about Glosser’s death, the White House told Mother Jones the link to the coronavirus was incorrect. [HuffPost]
Trump gets very interesting when he goes off script. He can’t keep from doing that.

Trump administration sending more federal agents to reinforce Portland courthouse as standoff with protesters intensifies
To strengthen the federal forces arrayed around Portland’s downtown courthouse, the U.S. Marshals Service decided last week to send 100 deputy marshals to Portland, according to an internal email reviewed by The Washington Post.
The Department of Homeland Security is also considering a plan to send an additional 50 Customs and Border Protection personnel to the city, but a final decision on the deployment has not been made, according to senior administration officials involved in the federal response.
The pitched battle in Portland is all staged for the benefit of creating campaign commercials for Trump-Pence. The law-and-order team, saving America, one city at a time from anarchy, socialism, etc.

It is an affront to civil liberties for unidentified federal agents to enter a US city over the objections of its mayor, and to detain peaceful protesters.
Trump is creating chaos so he can call himself the “Law and Order President.”
And it’s as shameful as it is transparent.
