Tulsa experienced a surge in new infections, and Tulsa health officials say that the Trump rally on June 20 was a likely cause.
Keep watch on the numbers in Arizona and South Dakota, where Trump held rallies, also Trump’s next stop, New Hampshire.
He is a Super Spreader. He is a one-man catastrophe.
In six weeks, the Republican National Convention will be held in Jacksonville, Florida. No social distancing. No requirement to wear masks. Lots of cheering and droplets in the air. Then delegates will fan out across the country, some bringing the disease home.
This is no way to fight a pandemic.

It’s Portuguese:
Bolsonaro is diagnosed with COVIDO-19 and takes Chloroquine, in a gesture evaluated as “advertising” for inappropriate medication. In March, he did it after returning from his trip, refused to undergo exams. After that, reports (suspected) with false names were presented.
Now, Trump returns with the possibility of “new outbreaks”.
Could we associate these two cases, these two gentlemen who do not offer us confidence?

The next surge can be attributed to Trumpy Dumpty’s 4th of July hate-celebration at Mt. Rushmore, his attempt to foment a Rebellion to overthrow the U.S. Constitution and install his royal majesty, Trump-Eek-Thin-Skin as America’s first Emperor. If the Kremlin’s Agent Orange succeeds, may he follow in the footsteps of Julius Cesar with similar last words, “You too, Jared.”
“Friday night, in an amphitheater in the shadow of Mount Rushmore, a military band played smooth jazz on snare drums and trumpets as the country sank under the rising number of coronavirus infections. Thousands of unmasked guests, awaiting the arrival of the president, sat shoulder-to-shoulder in black folding chairs tethered together in a kind of coronavirus chain of denial. The VIPs would, of course, be seated separately onstage — not six feet apart but not amid the storm of exhalations, coughs, vociferous cheers and sneezes. And just to add to the upside-down, inside-out madness of the mass gathering, Ivanka Trump, the president’s adviser and daughter, tweeted a reminder to be safe over the holiday weekend by social distancing and wearing a mask. Her nearest and dearest did not listen to the plea.’

Today’s Fun Fact!
In a school day, students exhale about 70,000 liters of air into a classroom.

If they are wearing surgical masks (as opposed to N95 respirators), that will be about 23,333 liters of filtered air and 46,666 of air that the masks have not filtered.

OK. That’s not exactly correct, but it’s good enough for a thought experiment. I just read a study that said that surgical masks filter out about a third of virus-sized particles.

In March, I started using up my supply of M95 masks. I had three left in the last box I bought.
In June, I switched to my GVS Elipse p100 mask.
The M95 is rated to stop 95% of the crap we breathe with our air.
The GVS P100 is rated to stop 99.9% of the crap down to the size of germs (viruses and bacteria). I’m still using that one.

Lloyd, I own one of these respirators (I bought it to wear when I cleaned a dead possum out from my crawl space), but I’ve read that these are useless for protection against viruses. True or not?

But Lloyd that type of mask expels your exhalation unfiltered to others…
I wish I could get N95’s. No exhalation valve. Doesn’t seem to be any similar substitute. I have one I save/ reuse for short-duration “special” occasions… Really it just stays in its brown ppr bag, near the door, my “security blanket.” I wear pleated cloth masks my sis made. The filter is just cotton batting. Lightbulb : I’ll try to get the GVS P100 replacement filters!

The N95s that I have all have the valves that release exhaled air.
“Can a respirator with a valve be effective against bioaerosols?” [NOTE: This info is near the bottom of the 3m.com page.]
“The purpose of a respirator’s exhalation valve is to reduce the breathing resistance during exhalation; it does not impact a respirator’s ability to provide respiratory protection. The valve is designed to open during exhalation to allow exhaled air to exit the respirator and then close tightly during inhalation, so inhaled air is not permitted to enter the respirator through the valve. While a valve does not change a respirator’s ability to help reduce a wearer’s exposure to bioaerosols, it is not recommended that a person who is exhibiting symptoms of illness wear a valved respirator, because there is a possibility that exhaled particles may leave the respirator via the valve and enter the surrounding environment. In summary:
•Healthcare workers may wear valved or unvalved respirators to help reduce their exposure to potentially infectious aerosols.
•Healthcare workers should wear a surgical respirator (which usually do not have valves) if they require respiratory protection while performing patient care tasks that might generate a high-pressure stream of liquid such as arterial spray.
Does a valved filtering facepiece respirator offer protection to people surrounding the person wearing the respirator if the person wearing the respirator is infected with COVID-19?
Does the valve allow potentially infectious material to escape, such as airborne droplets that may contain virus particles?
Currently 3M is not aware of any studies on the risk of infectious material exhausting out of the exhalation valve of respirators. To date, no guidance has been issued by the CDC, WHO, or NIOSH on this issue.”

This is my second reply. In the 1st reply, I provided info from 3m about the valves on N95 masks and a link to the site with more info on masks of all types. The site also said not to put tape over the valve to block it from letting your exhaled breath out.
In this reply, I want to point out that if everyone is wearing masks, with valves, or no valves, the mask still offers protection. The main purpose of wearing a mask is to filter the air we are breathing in an attempt to keep out the virus that might be floating in the air around us.

He just does not care….the following was in a NY Times story/editorial today about opening schools – laying the groundwork to activate Teach for America!!!!!
Here’s the comment
Mr. Trump today threatened to cut off federal aid to schools that refuse to fully reopen in the fall. But if he wants children back in class, argues David Plotz of Business Insider, he could help by requesting billions in emergency funds that could, for example, add extra classroom space to promote social distancing or fund a national teaching corps of recent college graduates similar to Teach for America.

We can safely reopen schools when we have built to the capacity to test every person in every school.
Short of that, we can reopen schools when we have built the capacity to provide N95 respirators to every person in every school.
Short of these measures, reopening schools is extraordinarily dangerous.

So, basically, schools CANNOT “reopen safely.”

Of course not. That’s magical thinking. There is much that must be done before they can “reopen safely.” This is going to be a catastrophe.

I was rereading Stephen Ambrose’s “Citizen Soldiers” late last night because I couldn’t sleep for hours… it’s about the U.S. military during World War II.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49251.Citizen_Soldiers
There’s a great section about leadership….the difference between “chickenshit” officers who no one respected and that one sergeant, for example, who rose above the chaos to rally the soldiers -and in the end actually save lives.
Of course, one of the key characteristics of a true leader is the willingness to sacrifice for the people under their command or, as often was the case in World War II, their buddies.
Lloyd, Bob, Diane and so many of the regular ‘cast’ on here, I’d follow you into any battle. And that includes you, SomeDAMpoet, who I’m sure would be tossing pithy truth bombs at whatever adversary we encountered.
If only we had some leaders now in the U.S. who could inspire our nation to work together and move in a better direction…
And, one thing this pandemic has hammered home to me is that schools need to work hard on building trust, long before a crisis hits. It’s so essential.
BTW I always have to look up how to spell the ‘poet’s’ name, ha, ha. And, searching on here, I just stumbled upon this post from July 5, 2017 about “The Heroes of This Blog!” That’s nice since I don’t feel all that heroic this morning on a few hours sleep.
2017 sounds like a long time ago these days.
