Patrick O’Donnell is one of the best education journalists in the nation. He has covered charter and cyber charter scandals in Cleveland and in Ohio without fear or favor. Ohio, as you may have noticed, is awash in charter corruption.
O’Donnell worked for the Cleveland Plain-Dealer until last weekend, when the newspaper pushed out its leading journalists and told them they could cover far-flung areas if they want to stay employed. The order from on high essentially fired union journalists and gutted the newspaper’s coverage of Cleveland.
The Plain-Dealer is part of Advance Publications, which is owned by the billionaire Newhouse family. Advance is engaged in cost-cutting that will destroy local journalism. It’s all about the Almighty Dollar.

Looks like Advance Publications wants to become online delivery more than print. One arm of Advance Publications is Charter Communications and Spectrum, provider of internet services and programming, including news.

We can ponder how the loss of a middle class eroded demand for Main Street’s services like local, independent news providers.

The extreme right is attempting to take over the levers of power, every one. They now control the DOJ, the Supreme Court, much of the federal judiciary, many state departments of education, many large school districts, the Whiter House, the Senate, and many major news outlets (Faux News, the Wall Street Journal of Corporate Apologetics, Sinclair Broadcasting Group, The New York Post, etc.).
We have a struggle ahead.

I think it is about the all mighty dollar, but it is even more about controlling the almighty message. More local papers have been gobbled up by conglomerates who eliminate or distort local coverage and control which national and international stories are seen. It is quite frightening and frustrating.
