On page one of the New York Times:
“Used to Meeting Challenges With Bluster and Force, Trump Confronts a Crisis Unlike Any Before,” by Peter Baker and Maggie Haberman:
“Mr. Trump is no stranger to crisis. He has spent a lifetime grappling with bankruptcy, fending off creditors, evading tax collectors, defending lawsuits, deflecting regulators, spinning reporters and dueling with estranged wives, usually coming out ahead, at least as he defines it.
“But these were crises of his own creation involving human adversaries he knew how to confront. Nothing in his background in business, entertainment or multiple marriages prepared him for the coronavirus pandemic now threatening America’s health and wealth.
“Mr. Trump’s performance on the national stage in recent weeks has put on display the traits that Democrats and some Republicans consider so jarring — the profound need for personal praise, the propensity to blame others, the lack of human empathy, the penchant for rewriting history, the disregard for expertise, the distortion of facts, the impatience with scrutiny or criticism. For years, skeptics expressed concern about how he would handle a genuine crisis threatening the nation, and now they know.”

Unfortunately for the country those positive numbers are about to change in a very dramatic way.
I am no expert on the density of cities in Northern Italy, my trip to the region in September certainly being canceled the least of my concerns. But the density of populations in American cities are probably way higher than Norther Italy.
NYC is probably in the top 3 cities in the Nation in terms of hospital infrastructure, beds , research facilities. My friends daughter a young nurse at NYU Cornell medical center has come down with the virus; after reusing respirators for a week.
But the Trumpanzee crowd don’t care much about what happens in NY , Seattle or California. What they do not realize is that their hospital infrastructure pales in comparison. As this spreads South and West and into rural America as it surely will. It will be devastating to a population that is older and less healthy. With already struggling hospital centers.
This is the Trump virus not the China virus . Did China try to not pull the fire alarm from January 1 till January 19 . Sure they did. Did they know how deep and far the virus had spread? On January 14 there were 42 known patients, over half of whom were zoo-otic transmissions. Chinese and WHO officials said the virus was contained. As more and more started showing up at hospitals; on the 19th Xi sent in epidemiological teams into Wuhan . 3 days later 3 huge Chinese cities were under a military style quarantine .
At that point Trump and the world knew but the virus had already spread. In fact it was probably spreading here from the first week in January. As there was a teen whose Flu swab was taken on January 20 in Washington State. He had no known foriegn contacts. How long before the 20th did he contact the virus was he the only one . Did the virus on the West coast fly across the country. Or did others bring it in from Europe?
Those 4 Senators knew enough to sell their stock on the 24th. You can bet that US. intelligence who were aware of a new virus on Dec 31 ; were aware that it was spreading rapidly as quickly as Xi was. That is when this Nation should have been put on a war footing to prevent a spread that could kill more Americans than in all our wars.

Exactly the time line I am talking about Axios reaches the conclusion that this was a cover up . I am certain no nation wants to shut down . So like Trump, Xi waited perhaps two weeks to see how extensive it was ,what the transmission rate was. On the 19th he sends epidemiologists to Wuhan, 3 days later he starts shutting the nation down .
You can be sure that American intelligence assets were seeing an increase in hospital patients and knew almost as soon as Xi .

“Trump’s Dangerously Effective Coronavirus Propaganda
“The president’s effort to play down the pandemic is being amplified by a coalition of partisan media, digital propagandists, and White House officials.
… Scholars who study modern disinformation tactics have identified this approach as “censorship through noise.” (Steve Bannon, the former White House strategist, has described the strategy in blunter terms: “Flood the zone with shit.”) …
“Trump supporters have been warned incessantly not to trust mainstream journalistic coverage of the issue.” …

‘Misinformation and cant, along with a kindred scorn for science and professional expertise: these things are pathogens, too. Counterfeit facts can polarize, alienate, disaffect, rouse misdirected rage, & foment social division. They come at a cost to our civility; at a time of pandemic, especially, they also come at a cost in human lives. During this dangerous period, a range of polls revealed that Republicans, in particular, trust Trump’s information on the virus more than that of the “lame-stream media.” Fake news and conspiracy theories are opportunistic viruses, and for many weeks there was no end to their spread. Trump cannot be forgiven for his preening & his belatedness.’ Friday, the President spent much of his briefing berating a reporter and further alarming the public. If is better to be lucky than good, then ‘Trump is not good. so we must hope that he will be lucky.’
“The GOP enablers and liars are was responsible as Trump for the disaster we face. When Trump is standing to one side and listening to someone do his or her required Trump praise (a necessary part of any interaction between Trump and subordinates, as at a cabinet meeting or joint press briefing), he has a habit of puffing out his chest (difficult, given his physique) and reaching across his chest with one arm, grabbing the opposite label of his jacket at chest height, and pulling it slightly out–symbolically expanding his chest a little bit more. South Korea avoided locking down any city, but only by moving early and with extraordinary speed. In January, the country had four companies making tests, and as of March 9 had tested 210,000 citizens — the equivalent of testing 2.3 million Americans.
As of the same date, fewer than 9,000 Americans had been tested.
Everyone who is infected in South Korea goes into isolation in government shelters, and phones and credit card data are used to trace their prior movements and find their contacts. Where they walked before they fell ill is broadcast to the cellphones of everyone who was nearby.
Anyone even potentially exposed is quarantined at home; a GPS app tells the police if that person goes outside. The fine for doing so is $8,000.

The Virus Can Be Stopped, but Only With Harsh Steps, Experts Say
March 22, 2020
Scientists who have fought pandemics describe difficult measures needed to defend the United States against a fast-moving pathogen.
…Many experts, some of whom are international civil servants, declined to speak on the record for fear of offending the president. But they were united in the opinion that politicians must step aside and let scientists both lead the effort to contain the virus and explain to Americans what must be done.
Just as generals take the lead in giving daily briefings in wartime — as Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf did during the Persian Gulf war — medical experts should be at the microphone now to explain complex ideas like epidemic curves, social distancing and off-label use of drugs.
The microphone should not even be at the White House, scientists said, so that briefings of historic importance do not dissolve into angry, politically charged exchanges with the press corps, as happened again on Friday.
Instead, leaders must describe the looming crisis and the possible solutions in ways that will win the trust of Americans.
Above all, the experts said, briefings should focus on saving lives and making sure that average wage earners survive the coming hard times — not on the stock market, the tourism industry or the president’s health. There is no time left to point fingers and assign blame…
If it were possible to wave a magic wand and make all Americans freeze in place for 14 days while sitting six feet apart, epidemiologists say, the whole epidemic would sputter to a halt…

How Trump Is Worsening the Virus Now
Medical shortages are his responsibility.
By David Leonhardt
Opinion Columnist
…Instead, Trump has taken to the White House lectern to boast that he has invoked the 1950 Defense Production Act, which is technically true. He has then made vague and often incorrect claims about all the good it’s doing. On Sunday, he tweeted that Ford, G.M. and Tesla had “the go ahead” to make ventilators, a statement that appears to have little meaning. His advisers, in anonymous interviews, have admitted the truth: He doesn’t want to direct companies to produce medical supplies because doing so would violate the administration’s free-market economic views.
I want to emphasize that blaming Trump for the appearance of coronavirus would be deeply unfair. No matter who was president, the virus would likely have created a crisis, as it has in Europe.
But it’s also important to be clear about the responsibility that does fall on Trump. His months of denial — and his acceptance of the testing fiasco — meant that the United States failed to isolate people with the virus, as South Korea and Singapore did. His refusal to fix the medical-supply crisis means that the virus is unnecessarily spreading in hospitals and that Americans will unnecessarily die…

Experts are saying that the US has to become united and listen to experts if we are to win against this disease. Here are some of the enlightening thoughts by Dr. Rush Limbaugh.
……………………………..
Conservative talk show Rush Limbaugh may not have been infected by the coronavirus, but he had a rough case of foot-in-mouth disease Wednesday.
The ailing entertainer, who has suggested reports of the deadly disease are part of a conspiracy to undermine President Trump, further misinformed his audience Wednesday by claiming the virus is referred to as COVID-19 because there have been 18 other coronaviruses.
“Why do you think this is COVID-19?” he said. “This is the 19th coronavirus. They’re not uncommon.”
There are seven types of coronaviruses that effect humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The popular right-wing pundit has compared the coronavirus to a “common cold” and referred to informed media coverage of the growing pandemic as “panic.”
………….
South Korea didn’t have to combat this type of thinking.
“If Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh think coronavirus is a ‘hoax,’ how many millions of their listeners do too?”
March 11, 2020
Sean Hannity used his syndicated talk-radio program Wednesday to share a prediction he had found on Twitter about what is really happening with the coronavirus: It’s a “fraud” by the deep state to spread panic in the populace, manipulate the economy and suppress dissent.
“May be true,” Hannity declared to millions of listeners around the country.
As the coronavirus spreads around the globe, denial and disinformation about the risks are proliferating on media outlets popular with conservatives.
“This coronavirus?” Rush Limbaugh asked skeptically during his Wednesday program. “All of this panic is just not warranted.”
The Fox Business anchor Trish Regan told viewers Monday that the worry over coronavirus “is yet another attempt to impeach the president.”
Where doctors and scientists see a public health crisis, President Donald Trump and his media allies see a political coup afoot.

WHO says silent spread of coronavirus ‘extremely rare.’ Classified data from China suggests otherwise
byJosephine Ma, Linda Lew and Lee Jeong-ho
…One obstacle is that countries tally their confirmed cases differently.
The World Health Organization classifies all people who test positive as confirmed cases regardless of whether they experience any symptoms. South Korea also does this. But the Chinese government changed its classification guidelines on February 7, counting only those patients with symptoms as confirmed cases. The United States, Britain and Italy simply do not test people without symptoms, apart from medical workers who have prolonged exposure to the virus.
The approach taken by China and South Korea of testing anyone who has had close contact with a patient – regardless of whether the person has symptoms – may explain why the two Asian countries seem to have checked the spread of the virus. Hong Kong is extending testing to airport arrivals in the city, even if travelers have no symptoms.
Meanwhile in most European countries and the US, where only those with symptoms are tested, the number of infections continues to rapidly rise.
A growing number of studies are now questioning the WHO’s earlier statement that asymptomatic transmission was “extremely rare.” A report by the WHO’s international mission after a trip to China estimated that asymptomatic infections accounted for 1% to 3% of cases, according to a European Union paper…

Trump: ‘We can’t let the cure be worse than the problem itself’
President Trump is suggesting he might lift restrictions intended to prevent the spread of coronavirus if the economic pain from the measures becomes too great, tweeting that “we cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself.
“WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF,” Trump said in a late night tweet. “AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!”…
Some local leaders have said the restrictions that have closed bars, restaurants, theaters, music clubs and gyms could last for weeks or even months.
But Trump on Monday morning retweeted several accounts that urged the loosening of those restrictions in the name of getting Americans back to work, a sign he may be growing impatient with the dismal economic numbers that could threaten his reelection hopes in the fall.

Pence says White House will reevaluate social-distancing guidance at end of March
During a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Vice President Pence on Monday echoed President Trump’s suggestion that the federal government will take another look at its social-distancing recommendations for all Americans at the end of March.
“We thought it was important for every American to take action as tens of millions are to help us slow the spread,” Pence told reporters at FEMA. “But at the end of this 15 days, we’re going to get with our health experts, we’re going to evaluate ways in which we might be able to adjust that guidance for the American people.”
The 15-day period is set to expire March 30.
Late Sunday night, Trump suggested — in an all-caps tweet — he is considering restarting the economy and scaling back steps to contain the coronavirus pandemic, despite the advice of public health officials.
“WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF,” Trump said in the tweet. “AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!”

Trump flirts with a less-aggressive coronavirus response, echoing Fox News
March 23, 2020 at 11:07 a.m. CDT
Fox News’s weekend programming isn’t its calling card, but it may be having a significant impact on the course of the U.S. government’s coronavirus response….
Trump’s comments echo the rhetoric used by weekend host Steve Hilton on Sunday’s show, in which he urged the federal government to “flatten the coronavirus curve, but not the economy, before it’s too late.” Hilton also used the same medical analogy as Trump: “You know, that famous phrase: The cure is worse than the disease?”
“I want to focus tonight on what I think is an even bigger crisis” than coronavirus, Hilton said on Sunday’s show. “And that is the economic, social and above-all human costs of the total shutdown policy.”
He continued: “Just as the spread of coronavirus creates a curve of the number of people infected, this economic shutdown is creating a curve of the number of people affected — losing their jobs, their homes, their businesses.”
And: “You think it is just the coronavirus that kills people? This total economic shutdown will kill people.”
Appearing on a panel during the show, Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk echoed the message. He noted that a majority of cases are currently focused in a few states (although for some reason he mentioned New Jersey and not Washington state, even though the latter has about twice as many cases), and he recommended devoting resources to them and letting other parts of the country go back to work.
“So what I’d like to see is an even heavier focus and more national unity about assisting those areas, and also relieving some of the quarantine and allowing the American entrepreneur to be liberated,” Kirk said. “Day 15 comes, some of the other parts of the country that have not been as impacted, because as you talked about there are real economic consequences to these sorts of quarantines that heave been going on.”…

Here’s what I think must be in any final deal:
Direct relief to families: Families should get immediate checks with no phase-out for low income families, and we must increase unemployment insurance — including for those like contractors, freelancers and gig economy workers who traditionally aren’t covered.
Help for healthcare workers: Hospitals, doctors, nurses, first responders and states on the front lines need help, from ventilators and personal protective equipment like masks to hospital beds. If the President won’t use the Defense Production Act, we must act.
Relief for small businesses: Millions of small businesses are struggling to stay afloat and pay their employees. We must provide additional assistance, in grants, no-interest loans, and increased funding to help get them through this economic crisis.
No “slush fund” for big business: Our focus should be American families and small businesses, not corporate executives. An earlier version of this legislation pushed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell included a $500 billion dollar slush fund with few restrictions and few requirements to avoid layoffs, where states have to compete for funds with big businesses, and with no oversight, transparency, or protections for taxpayers. That must be off the table.
Protection of our democracy: The health of our democracy is also important. All states should allow no-excuse vote by mail and a fifteen day early voting period to ensure all voters are able to make their voices heard during this crisis.

Trump Is in a Frenzy Over the Economy—Not So Much the Virus
A president who has viewed his entire life through the prism of dollars and cents increasingly sees the pandemic the same way.
Updated Mar. 23, 2020
…Fox News hosts, in particular, have grown restless with social distancing. Host Laura Ingraham tweeted that doctors “should not be the determinative voices in policy making,” while Fox personality Tomi Lahren tweeted that anti-coronavirus measures would be “far more crippling than the virus.”
Challenges to social distancing have grown among right-wing columnists, too. In a Sunday column, former Bob Dole press secretary Douglas MacKinnon even proposed a national vote on whether to “let the COVID-19 run its course.” The virus has been projected to kill as many as 3.4 percent of those infected and hospitals are already warning that they are being overwhelmed by the number of patients they need to treat.
Right-wing personalities have also stepped up their attacks on Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who has been one of the most visible faces of the administration’s response. While pro-Trump figures have long touted Fauci’s appearance at Trump’s coronavirus press conferences as proof that the administration is succesfully handling the pandemic, that mood began to shift over the weekend, after Fauci appeared to clutch his face in disappointment during a press conference and gave an interview critical of Trump’s tone at the briefings…

President Trump continued to push two traditional malaria medications, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, in combination with a common antibiotic, azithromycin, as a treatment for Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, despite caution by the government’s top doctors.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who has appeared frequently at the president’s side at coronavirus briefings, was not present for Mr. Trump’s latest briefing. Mr. Trump has been frustrated in recent days by some of Mr. Fauci’s public commentary contradicting his remarks.Mr. Trump said that 10,000 units of chloroquine would be distributed in New York City on Tuesday. Dr. Fauci and others have said that its effectiveness remains highly uncertain. In fact, Banner Health, a hospital system in Arizona, reported on Monday that a man died and his wife was in stable condition after the couple self-medicated with a formulation of chloroquine phosphate that is used to clean fish tanks.

Trump Has Given Unusual Leeway to Fauci, but Aides Say He’s Losing His Patience
The president has become increasingly concerned as Dr. Anthony S. Fauci has grown bolder in correcting his falsehoods about the spread of the coronavirus.
March 23, 2020
President Trump has praised Dr. Anthony S. Fauci as a “major television star.” He has tried to demonstrate that the administration is giving him free rein to speak. And he has deferred to Dr. Fauci’s opinion several times at the coronavirus task force’s televised briefings.
But Dr. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, has grown bolder in correcting the president’s falsehoods and overly rosy statements about the spread of the coronavirus in the past two weeks — and he has become a hero to the president’s critics because of it. And now, Mr. Trump’s patience has started to wear thin.
So has the patience of some White House advisers, who see Dr. Fauci as taking shots at the president in some of his interviews with print reporters while offering extensive praise for Mr. Trump in television interviews with conservative hosts.
Mr. Trump knows that Dr. Fauci, who has advised every president since Ronald Reagan, is seen as credible with a large section of the public and with journalists, and so he has given the doctor more leeway to contradict him than he has other officials, according to multiple advisers to the president…

John Hopkins Study Finds U.S. Better Suited for Crisis Than Any Other Country
by The Bearded Patriot

The coronavirus outbreak hit the United States, and much of the world, hard. It has shut down most of our society. Health care workers and others are working overtime to stem the tide of cases and contain the virus. But it’s not all bad news. A new study from Johns Hopkins reveals just how prepared the country was, compared to the rest of the world.
Thanks to China, the coronavirus has spread far and wide. Some countries, such as Italy, were totally blindsided by this outbreak. Many more in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe were unprepared to quickly act and prevent widespread infection.
Democrats have frequently criticized Donald Trump over the United States’ preparedness. They say he wasn’t doing enough as the virus began to spread. Oh, what were the Democrats doing during those months? Right, spending time and millions on an impeachment scheme. Hmm… so who was really ignoring the threat?
In fact, Donald Trump was the one of the first people to recognize the threat and act. His early action to close the border to China has been credited for slowing the outbreak in the U.S. Long before Democrats even cared about COVID-19, Trump and his task force were planning.
Now, a study reveals the truth: the U.S.A. was better prepared than any other nation.
The United States was ranked the best-prepared country in the world to handle a pandemic in late 2019 by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security (JHU) — an assessment seemingly at odds with claims by Democrats that the Trump administration left the country vulnerable to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
The Global Health Security Index was was “developed with guidance from an international panel of experts from 13 countries, with research by the Economist Intelligence Unit,” The Washington Post reported last year. “More than 100 researchers spent a year collecting and validating publicly available data.”
At the same time, the paper noted that the U.S. score was still not perfect, and that “factors driving down the U.S. score include the risks of social unrest and terrorism, and low public confidence in government.” [Source: Fox News]
As you read reports about the outbreak in other countries, keep in mind we are different. Italy is not the United States. Nor is Iran. According to this report, we are better prepared to combat a pandemic than any other nation.
Some of the reasons our “score” was lower than it could have been were the risk of social unrest, terrorism, and low public confidence in the government.
Social unrest? You mean the way Antifa and other leftist groups cause problems? Terrorism? You mean because Democrats instituted chain migration and open borders? Low confidence in the government? Because of a D.C. swamp full of crooks and con men?
All the factors that make us less ready for COVID-19 stem from the way Democrats run this country. Only thanks to Trump are we prepared in the slightest to handle a crisis. Because of him our economy was in a better position than anyone else’. Once this blows over, expect it to come roaring back.
Because of Trump’s tough border policies, he kept infected people from entering the country. Today, President Trump and his task force is leading the charge against coronavirus. He is providing aid and support to state and local authorities. And he is providing hope to Americans struggling in this hour of trial.
The Democrats? They can’t even get a piece of legislation passed without pulling some crooked game. So, forgive me if I point the finger at them. They’ve spent weeks attacking the president, instead of working to help Americans.
But the fact remains that we’ll make it through this crisis, because of our values, strengths, and capitalist spirit.
And the world will want to emulate us.

“It’s not built to shut down. Our people are full of vim and vigor and energy. They don’t want to be locked in a house or an apartment or some space,” Trump said during a Fox News town hall Tuesday afternoon.
“You can destroy a country this way, by closing it down, where it literally goes from being the most prosperous,” Trump said, remarking on the strength of the U.S. economy just three weeks ago before the coronavirus started to have severe impacts in the United States.

Trump Claims ‘Certain People’ Want to Keep Shutdown Going So He’ll ‘Do Poorly’ in 2020 Vote
The president seemed restrained throughout most of his latest White House briefing on the coronavirus—until a reporter dared to question his plan to reopen the economy by Easter.
President Donald Trump lashed out at a reporter Wednesday when pressed on whether his hope to have the country “opened up” by Easter amid the coronavirus pandemic has more to do with politics than public health.
“The media would like to see me do poorly in the election,” Trump said after being asked at a White House briefing to explain the basis for his plan to loosen coronavirus-related restrictions by Easter.
Trump kept the criticism up when pressed further over the fact that experts have said following that timeline isn’t prudent.
“Just so you understand, are you ready? I think there are certain people that would like it not to open so quickly. I think there are certain people that would like it to do financially poorly because they think that would be very good as far as defeating me at the polls,” Trump said.
He went on to claim there are people in the media who want a prolonged shutdown to happen as he pointed to two different reporters he accused of writing “fake news.”…
