Just when you think Trump could not get crazier, this happens.
The Trump administration is investigating the email records of dozens of current and former senior State Department officials who sent messages to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private email, reviving a politically toxic matter that overshadowed the 2016 election, current and former officials said.
As many as 130 officials have been contacted in recent weeks by State Department investigators — a list that includes senior officials who reported directly to Clinton as well as others in lower-level jobs whose emails were at some point relayed to her inbox, said current and former State Department officials. Those targeted were notified that emails they sent years ago have been retroactively classified and now constitute potential security violations, according to letters reviewed by The Washington Post.
In virtually all of the cases, potentially sensitive information, now recategorized as “classified,” was sent to Clinton’s unsecure inbox.
State Department investigators began contacting the former officials about 18 months ago, after President Trump’s election, and then seemed to drop the effort before picking it up in August, officials said.
Senior State Department officials said that they are following standard protocol in an investigation that began during the latter days of the Obama administration and is nearing completion.
“This has nothing to do with who is in the White House,” said a senior State Department official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing probe. “This is about the time it took to go through millions of emails, which is about 3½ years.”
To many of those under scrutiny, including some of the Democratic Party’s top foreign policy experts, the recent flurry of activity surrounding the Clinton email case represents a new front on which the Trump administration could be accused of employing the powers of the executive branch against perceived political adversaries

Trump is doing what he did when he was a private citizen running a crooked business.
When he did something illegal and/or broke a written contract he had signed, and someone took him to court, he almost always sued them back with a nuisance suit that is meant to bankrupt the honest workers and/or partners he cheated.
But in this case, the people Trump is investigating have the money and means to take this court battle to the bitter end where Trump will count on the conservative US Supreme Court justices to rule in his favor. What Trump doesn’t know, unless he has Kompromat on all five of the conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justices, because they are appointed for life, one or two of them might rule with the liberals. All it takes is on conservative voting with the liberal justices to end this Trumpish ploy.

I have heard that many of the people who participated in Hitler’s “Final Solution” — the mass rounding up of innocent men, women and children and exterminating them — were afraid of Hitler. They did have a good reason since Hitler and his henchmen could have harmed them or their families and likely would have. And even then we wondered why so many of them never objected.
But it is typical that Jeff Flake could make a statement like that with the media dutifully transcribing it and not asking the obvious question.
What will Trump do to them? Are they afraid for the safety of themselves or their family because Trump is a murderous criminal? I’d like to get Flake on the record to say that.
What is the very worst that would happen to them if they stood up for their country and democracy and doing what is the ethical and moral thing? They’d lose their job and have to find real work?
Are you kidding me that Jeff Flake is saying the entire Republican Senate and House are so lazy and terrified of work that they’d rather condone treason than get a real job? What else could they possibly be afraid of?
There is nothing easier and less “dangerous” than one of those Republicans standing up for what is right. The very worst that could happen is that they keep their integrity and find a new job.
That’s what Flake says they are so afraid of???

Actually, most Germans would not have been harmed if they had stood up to Hitler. That’s a myth. I recommend reading “Ordinary Men” by Christopher Browning for just one example of how Germans could say no to what was happening and not be hurt. Other groups, such as the Poles, couldn’t do that, of course, but Hitler left mist Germans alone.

Threatened Out West,
There was the White Rose Society, a group of university students in Munich whose completely non-violent resistance to Hitler (they distributed leaflets) did not end well. Most did not survive.
It is clear that Trump believes he should be able to do the same in 2019 America.
You do have a point in that there was a time when the Germans could resist Hitler — during all that time he was spewing his hateful rhetoric and encouraging violence and passing laws targeting “non-Aryans” and too many Germans were willing to overlook that because the hatred and violence wasn’t directed at them, so they normalized it and kept insisting Hitler was just a typical dishonest politician just like all the others. They continued normalizing Hitler’s behavior — especially because it was directed at the “other” and even if they didn’t like it those enablers were clearly helping Hitler by their insistence that what he was doing was no different than the politicians before him. Those people thought calling Hitler an “oaf” and saying they didn’t like him personally somehow made up for their insistence that what Hitler was actually doing was no different than other politicians before him. Hitler could not have grabbed power without those who claimed not to like his policies insisting that he was no worse than any previous politicians.
Once Hitler consolidated power, and there was no government but him, I don’t believe Germans could speak out safely.
So what we have seen here is too many people on the right and sometimes on the left who have normalized Trump’s behavior, ignoring the clear evidence that Trump was not just corrupt, but that he was a danger to democracy. We are still at the time where it costs nothing for them to speak out. But if Trump continues to be empowered because those voices on the right – and some on the left – keep normalizing his behavior, there will likely be a time when opposing Trump is the death sentence he believes those who oppose him deserve.

The man is truly unhinged. And the fact the entire Republican Party cared so little about this country that they preferred to enable him instead of acting with any kind of break tells me that the entire party is corrupt to the core. The Republican pundits who have spent years fawning over William Barr as a respected, ethical man had no more integrity than Barr himself, Trump’s “fixer”. Barr’s own personal John Mitchell.
On the lighter side, I saw this funny “fake” headline at Daily Kos:
DEMOCRATS IN ARRAY! Organized! Combobulated! Enfranchised! Whelmed! Gruntled!
I have read endless columns since Thursday – almost always written by white men — insisting that impeaching Trump is a bad idea and it is guaranteed to help Trump win. Nowhere in any of those columns do they mention doing what is right.
Read Maureen Dowd’s interview with Nancy Pelosi in her column to see what it means to stand on principles and be able to succinctly address the Republican talking points.
One of my favorites is when Pelosi was asked the usual trite “gotcha” question by Maureen:
“Does she no longer think, as she said for months, that impeachment is so divisive that it needs to be a bipartisan effort? “No, I said I HOPED it would be bipartisan. I still hope so. It’s up to the Republicans whether they honor their oath of office or honor their oath of Trump.”
And the column expressed exactly why the Democrats needed to impeach, win or lose:
“The speaker would have preferred to send Trump packing at the ballot box. But since he keeps contaminating the ballot box, asking foreign countries to meddle in our elections to help him win, what choice did she have? The man who always claims the system is rigged against him keeps trying to rig the system — proving Pelosi’s point that Trump projects.”
And one more:
“I’ve said before, I do not have the medical background to analyze the president’s behavior,” Pelosi says. Maybe it’s time to break the last taboo and put a psychiatrist on staff at the White House to analyze a president’s mental state, or possible impairment?
“No, I think the White House should have an honest lawyer on staff,” she says. “And not a rogue Justice Department.”
I no longer care whether or not impeachment hurts the Democrats nor if they will be successful. It is the right thing to do and to do anything else is to abandon this country to proto-fascism. If this country is going that way, it should go down fighting.

Yep. But never so accurate.
It turns out that Bill Barr and the guy who wrote the memo that forbid the whistle blower complaint from going to Congress go way back. Do a google search of Steven Engel’s history working for Republican White Houses. And read The Guardian article from April this year that recounts how the very week that Barr delivered his so-called “unsolicited” memo that sitting Presidents were immune from prosecution, Steven Engel arranged a special brown bag luncheon for Barr — at that time a private citizen — so the justice department lawyers under him could hear his ideas straight from Barr’s lips.
Rod Rosenstein gets put out as the front man, but it is Steve Engel who signed that memo to hide the whistle blower complaint. And the very same Steve Engel also signed the finding a few months ago that forbid the IRS to comply with providing Trump’s tax return to the House, even though they were legally obligated to do so.
I’m glad that Nancy Pelosi is not just calling out Trump, but calling out the fact that men like Barr and Engel have never been the ethical and upright people the media always characterizes them as being. They have willingly acted as Trump’s fixer again and again.

Yes, and when Republicans were in office that sensitive information was sent to Colin Powell’s insecure AOL account and Karl Rove’s personal e-mail account, and Jared Kushner’s and Ivanka Trump’s and dozens and dozens of other Republicans who either sent or received numerous classified e-mails. Breaking the law to “win” is A-OK when you are a Republican. Your Attorney General will arrange for all evidence to be locked up where “classified” material goes.
I’m sure it is just a coincidence that the investigation just happens to target only a political rival Trump has often mentioned by name that he wants to get. Sounds very similar to what Trump was caught arranging with the Ukraine and why he is being impeached. \
Here is what is scary: the phrase “now recategorized as ‘classified'”.
Can you imagine what is going to happen? The same corrupt people who decided that Trump’s incriminating conversation with the Ukraine should be locked up with highly classified material now get to to through old e-mails and decide after the fact that they should have been marked classified, so that warrants locking up the sender. One fascinating part of all this is that Trump cannot simply, like Nixon, resign. Even if he got a blanket pardon from a President Pence, he would still face a long, long, long, long, long list of state criminal indictments for a broad range of misdeeds. His only hope is staying in office. But I think that even the most ardent Republican participants in the Trump Limbo Party (how low, how low, how low can we go) are starting to recognize that Trump is going to lose very, very badly in 2020 and drag a lot of them with him. Their only hope is to get rid of Trump as quickly as is possible and hitch their stars to a different candidate. Mitt Romney again?

Trump raised the issue as recently as Wednesday, calling it “one of the great crimes committed” by his 2016 opponent.
Hillary and her emails will never die as long as Trump has any measure of power. This is a distraction from Trump’s impeachment inquiry and an attempt to once again blame Hillary so that his base can once again chant with renewed enthusiasm, “Lock her up.”
One official said the investigators were apologetic: “They realize how absurd it is.”
LikeLike
Actually, I think the Hillary Clinton e-mail did die in Trump’s brain when it was clear that Hillary Clinton was not going to be running for President.
As soon as it seemed that Biden had an excellent chance of being his 2020 opponent, Trump supposedly became fixated on Biden.
The Republicans are desperate to push the narrative that this is simply about Trump caring so much about corruption. But the timing shows that it is clearly not. And Trump’s fixers in the White House knew that which is why they locked up the transcripts. To this day we have no idea what Trump really said — we have Trump’s fixers’ version of it. And given how much fixer William Barr’s “memo” about the Mueller report intentionally left out all clear evidence of Trump’s criminal actions, we can all put money on the original transcript of that call being significantly worse. We haven’t seen it yet.
The co-opted media always likes to excuse Trump’s actions by pushing what is clearly right wing propaganda. And that right wing propaganda is that while Trump is “obsessive” and may do nasty things, they are all perfectly legal. Presidents are allowed to be nasty and obsessive. They are NOT allowed to use their office and foreign aid to coerce other countries to come up with dirt on their political rivals.
The only reason the e-mail investigation suddenly rose from the dead is because the White House got wind that a whistle blower may likely come forward with information about how Trump was now using his office to get foreign leaders to manufacture dirt on Biden. That e-mail investigation got dropped as fast as the Republicans dropped “Benghazi” once Trump knew HRC was not going to run. It got dropped as soon as the investigation had no political use. And instead the story became Biden “corruption”.
If Trump gets away with this and Bernie Sanders looks like he will be the nominee, Trump will suddenly get obsessed with “Bernie corruption”. And if Elizabeth Warren is the nominee, Trump will suddenly be obsessed with “Warren corruption”. Etc, etc.
That is why it is SO important to impeach Trump now. Because allowing him to use his office to push his campaign propaganda that his 2020 opponent — whoever that may be — is a corrupt, dishonest man or woman who is lying to the American people and should not be trusted is going to happen and it will destroy whichever candidate wins the nomination, whether it is Bernie, Warren or someone else.
Right now, the e-mail investigation is only being ramped up for the sole reason of frightening people into silence. The message is: If you do not do what I want, my corrupt White House henchmen will re-classify e-mails and then claim you committed a crime by having classified e-mails.
Remember, Trump’s yes men fixers seemed to re-classify Trump asking Ukraine to do him “a favor” and get him dirt on Biden as “top secret”. So they are clearly willing to re-classify anything in anyone’s e-mail to claim that it is a crime to have it in your possession.
We live at a time when we have a Putin in power and things like “investigations” and “findings” and “crimes” and “elections” are words used to describe doing whatever Putin wants. Frightening that this is the US.

Diane,
I think the right wing would like the public to believe that the only reason that Trump ordered the e-mail investigation to suddenly ramp up again is just Trump being just wanting to hear the “lock her up” chants again. Because Trump being a jerk having fun is not a crime.
But the “lock her up” chants were always about getting the co-opted media to repeat his dishonest propaganda that he is the honest and truthful candidate and HRC was the criminal who voters should not trust. That’s how he won the election.
But what Trump wanted was chants of saying “lock HIM up” to undermine Biden and present him as a corrupt criminal. That’s why he decided to use US foreign aid — taxpayer money — to demand “a favor” from the Ukraine and demand they get dirt on Joe Biden. Who Trump actually named just in case the Ukraine didn’t understand that it was about Joe Biden. And just in case that wasn’t clear, Trump said that his own personal attorney Rudy Giuliani would be their contact person to make sure the investigation was doing what it was intended to do.
It turns out that for the first time in years, the media has not yet fallen for the right wing spin on the story that Trump was so certain they would do. Remember, this entire story was supposed to be about the corrupt and dishonest Joe Biden with the media entirely overlooking the treasonous behavior.
It’s absolutely clear to me that the Trump White House released that “memo” of his conversation because they thought the media would do what they have always done and accept the Trump spin on the story — that Trump was just helping root out the corruption of Joe Biden. That’s clearly the reason the “memo” mentions Joe Biden so much — the media was supposed fall over themselves reporting the “leaks” from the fixers in Trump’s Justice Department about the criminal activities of the Biden family. That was supposed to be the only story.
I find it shocking — but happily shocking — that for once the media didn’t focus on the dishonest White House spin. Turns out that the media actually did its job and focused on the real story — that Trump not only used foreign policy to extort a foreign government to help gather “dirt” on a political opponent, but then his own fixers in the Justice Department conspired to cover up Trump’s crime.
Now the only thing left is for Trump to try to send a warning message to everyone — his fixers in the Justice Department will open up an investigation in which they will arrange to re-classify e-mails so they can “get” anyone on their enemies list.
Trump wants to hear “lock Biden up”. He doesn’t care about HRC’s e-mails but he does care about making sure anyone with information knows that they will be punished if they don’t put loyalty to Trump first — over their country and over any moral compass they have to do the right thing. Starting up this e-mail thing is clearly in service to that.
Trump isn’t like Nixon — he is like Putin. And he believes he has license to do anything to anyone if they don’t do his bidding.
Remember, Trump already told us who he was when he said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and his supporters would be good with it.

Here’s the bottom line. Republicans DON”T care. They don’t care about the Constitution, they don’t care about democratic values (they do EVERYthing they can to suppress voting), and they don’t care about the Republic.
They care about power, and money. And they are quite willing to do whatever it takes to keep the former so they can reap the latter.
Think about it. Which modern American presidents have spit on the Constitution and the rule of law?
• Richard Nixon, Republican, Watergate.
• Ronald Reagan, Republican, Iran-Contra.
• George W. Bush, Republican, ignored dire warnings of imminent terrorist threats to focus instead on supply-side tac uts, lied about his negligence, tried to cover it up, and started a war against a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, and refused to pay for it.
• Donald Trump, Republican, emoluments violations galore, tax fraud, knowingly and willing took tons of Russian help to win* election in 2016, lied about it and tried to cover it up, tried to shake down the Ukraine to gin up a phony ‘scandal’ against a political rival, and placed compromising – and likely incriminating – phone calls illegally into top-secret computer storage to hide them from scrutiny.
Republicans defended all of this chicanery (or, i the case of Nixon, until the impeachment dam broke on them). But they impeached Bill Clinton for lying about some blowjobs.
Republicans are what they are, and what they are now is traitors to the Constitution and to the Republic.
Congressional scholars Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein said seven tears ago that Republicans were,
“ideologically extreme… scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.’…”
They’ve only gotten worse since then.
This is a critically important time in the history of our nation. It’s also a critically important time for public education. Are we going to embrace more stupidity – in the form of SAT and ACT testing and STEM and Advanced Placement courses – to “improve” public schooling, or are we going to stress what is actually important, developing democratic citizenship?
It’s not an idle question.

Kremlin warns US against releasing private calls between Putin and Trump amid Ukraine scandal
29 SEPTEMBER 2019
Russia has warned the US against publishing private conversations between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump as it emerged the White House may have restricted access to the president’s conversations with multiple world leaders.
The comment was in response to the White House’s decision to publish a transcript of Mr Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after Democrats announced the beginning of a formal impeachment investigation into whether the US president pressured his counterpart to interfere in the 2020 election.
Asked if Moscow is worried about transcripts of Mr Trump’s calls with the Russian President being similarly released, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “we would like to hope that it wouldn’t come to that in our relations, which are already troubled by a lot of problems.”
“The materials related to conversations between heads of states are usually classified according to normal international practice,” he added…

Judge orders Trump to testify in case involving a 2015 fight between his security guards and protesters from The Washington Post

A New York City judge has ordered that President Trump sit for videotaped testimony in a lawsuit brought by protesters who say they were assaulted by Trump’s security guards during the 2016 campaign.
The Bronx-based judge, Doris M. Gonzalez, wrote that Trump’s testimony is “indispensable” to the trial, which is scheduled to begin Thursday. She wrote he must therefore be examined by videotape before then, though Trump is likely to ask for a delay.
The protesters argue Trump, his campaign and business should be held liable for the actions of security guards who were working for the company. They say, even if Trump didn’t directly order the guards to act, he had control over their actions because they were his employees and his campaign trail rhetoric gave them the impression that violence would be condoned…

I watched Schiff’s opening statement in which he did lie directly. Quite surprising. I wondered how he thought he could get away with it. He was called on it and admitted he mischaracterized the phone call transcript. Given what Trump DID do, which probably WAS illegal, why would Schiff feel the need to lie? Doesn’t give me much confidence that the Democrats will be able to impeach without stumbling over their untied shoelaces and guarantee his reelection and possibly give the house back to the Republicans as well. Serve them right for refusing to accept his legal election. Maybe they were worried about Hilary and Obama’s crimes being investigated. Now they have guaranteed investigative payback.

LOL! Because of course Hillary’s so-called “crimes” were never investigated. Never. Not in 20 or is it 50 House investigations. Not by the FBI. Not ever ever ever.
Talk about liars. I doubt Schiff even said anything that wasn’t untrue, but if he had and — according to you — he corrected himself, then that’s not lying. That is making a mistake and correcting it.
Lying is when you tell right wing fanatics that Obama was born in Kenya, he is not a legitimate President, and when called on it directly, don’t do what normal people do and correct the record but spend the next few years insisting you have the proof.
Maybe you still think Ted Cruz’s dad helped kill JFK because Trump told you so. Maybe when Trump opens his investigation into Cruz — telling other countries they better come up with the dirt if they expect any US foreign aid — you might understand. Since Trump’s “truths” will be turned against a right wing Republican. And given your post, I suspect you are certain that Ted Cruz’ is the son of the man who helped assassinated one of the most popular Presidents in the US. After all, Trump said so. He heard it. And “hearing” it means Trump should be able to get any foreign government to help him get the dirt if they want their aid.
Actually, in Russia everything Putin says is the honest truth. Right? Your answer to that question will demonstrate whether you are a Russian troll who isn’t allowed to say untying bad about Putin.

Here’s the newest pitch coming from the WH:
First, Democrats in Congress and their footsoldiers in the mainstream media tried to overturn the 2016 election with an exhausting two-year investigation on alleged Russia collusion. It ended when a case built entirely on lies and deception collapsed in embarrassing fashion.
That they tried and failed already isn’t stopping Congressional Democrats, who are playing the same political games once again. Armed with a new fabrication, they’re determined to do what they couldn’t in a fair election: beat President Donald J. Trump.
Why are they so scared?
President Trump promised American citizens that he would fight for them—and, in the process, drain a swamp that’s served them countless empty promises for years. Democrats and the media cannot stand that President Trump has exposed their true colors with simple, brutally effective language that speaks to working Americans.
Just like last time, there’s no truth to anything they’re selling. There was no “quid pro quo” between President Trump and President Zelensky of Ukraine. There was no cover-up to a now publicly available call. And all this stemmed from the complaints of an anonymous “whistleblower” who admitted to having no firsthand knowledge of any of it.
The saddest part is that this doesn’t hurt President Trump, who won’t suffer in terms of public opinion facing another witch hunt. The only ones it hurts are the American people, who once again see their Congress squandering years on political theater rather than delivering on its promise of an agenda for the middle class.
It’s a new hoax—in the same swamp. The good news is that while the left breaks its promises once again, it will never stop President Trump from keeping his.
The Washington Times: “After failing on Russia, Democrats try a new hoax”
Coincidence? “Intel community secretly gutted requirement of first-hand whistleblower knowledge”

The first Civil War will look like a picnic compared to the one that is almost on us. Not if, but when; how soon.
