Valerie Strauss is not surprised yet disappointed that Betsy DeVos kicked off her “back to school tour” at a religious school in Milwaukee, flaunting her contempt for the vast majority of students who attend public schools. By doing so, she showed her agenda: privatization of public schools and transfer of public money to religious schools.
It is ironic that she chose Milwaukee to demonstrate the benefits of school choice. Milwaukee has had choice for three decades: charters, vouchers, and a shrinking public school sector.
All three sectors are faring poorly. On the National Assessment of Educational Progress, Milwaukee is one of the lowest performing cities in the nation. Students in religious schools, charters, and public schools are doing poorly.
Competition raised no boats. Milwaukee demonstrates the failure of school choice.
Betsy DeVos either doesn’t know or doesn’t care.
BdV doesn’t care to know …
She doesn’t know and she doesn’t care.
She doesn’t care nor does she give a [bleep], that’s her point. It’s all about social control through the continued privatization of everything.
The competition was never about raising all boats, but rather “raising” a supposedly deserving few and undermining public education and unions.
Reblogged this on David R. Taylor-Thoughts on Education and commented:
Milwaukee schools built by Scott Walker. A perfect example of epic failure.
Scott Walker of the Koch/DeVos Neo-religion.
yes…that same Scott Walker puppet
Catholic and billionaire greed for community tax dollars intended for education, makes the church a poor steward of American democracy.
Catholic cover-up of priest abuse makes the church a poor steward of the rule of law.
DeVos meeting so frequently with dioceses about public education makes them both poor stewards of the Constitution and national interest.
The Catholic Information Center in Washington D.C. is known as a center for influential priests and Republican, Catholic politicians. Pope Francis is disliked by prosperity, Republican Catholics. And, IMO, the Center’s 2019 John Paul II award to Prof. Robert George makes that evident. Critics of George say he has turned the Catholic Church into a tool of the Republican Party. He endorsed Ted Cruz in 2016, a person that Republican Catholic John Boehner described as “Lucifer himself”.
The 2020 projection for GOP women in the U.S. House of Representatives is 11 out of almost 200 positions, 5% women, 95% men.
A current, scheduled speaker at the Center included in her book, an essay by Peter Thiel. Thiel, raised an evangelical, is infamous for saying that women voting in a capitalistic democracy is an oxymoron.
There’s no shortage of women like Betsy DeVos carrying out the agenda of men who think women should be rendered powerless and without financial independence.
“DeVos and President Trump said when they took office that expanding school choice would be at the top of their education agenda.”
Forget “at the top”. It’s ALL they do. Public school students don’t even make the list unless they’re talking about guns, drugs or bullying.
Apparently public school students are all gun-toting, drug addicted bullies.
Is there an impeachment possibilty for the Secretary of Education?
No. She has not committed any impeachable offenses, so far as we know.
Well, she is colluding against 90% of all students. That’s what, 40 million kids?
You know, it’s almost like Trump WANTS to be impeached. The hair is just the tip of the iceberg.
Just after he survived being impeached over The Mueller report, he starts the whole thing again.
Well, her credentials are impeachable.
And her logic is impeachable.
And her fingernails and hair are impeachable.
And her wardrobe is impeachable.
And her overall coiffer is impeachable
Seriously, what’s with that hair?
Clearly ain’t impeccable
Those were all (impeachable credentials, hair, etc) supposed to be a joke by the way (confusing impeachable for impeccable)
Yeah, but what happens when impechable hairs meet?
Many things about Betsy actually are impeccable (hair, fingernails, coiffer, dress, etc) ust not the ones important to her job (credentials, logic)
Trump actually does have impeachable hair.
I’ve posted this before but since I love Edgar Allan Poe so much, I have to post it again
“Lizabeth Dee” (With a lot of help from Edgar Allan Poe– “Annabel Lee”. And yes, her middle name really is “Dee”. Lizabeth D. also works, of course)
It was many and many a year ago,
In a Kingdom by the sea [Michigan, by Lake Michigan]
That a Sec Ed there lived whom you may know
By the name of Elizabeth Dee
And this billionaire lived with no other thought
Than to loathe and be loathed by me
I was a teacher and she was a plant
In this Kingdom by the sea,
And we loathed with a loathe that was more than loathe—
I and Elizabeth Dee
With a loathe that the wicked devils in Hell
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago
In a Kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, thrilling
The voucherful Lizabeth Dee
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To put her up in a big White House
In the Kingdumb by D.C.
The devils, not half so happy in Hell
Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this Kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Thrilling, fulfilling Elizabeth Dee
But our loathe it was stronger by far than the loathe
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the devils in Hell below
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my sole from the soul
Of the voucherful Lizabeth Dee
For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the charterful Lizabeth Dee
And the stars never rise, but I hear “privatize”
From the dollarful Lizabeth Dee;
So, to all I confide, I will not let her ride
On my classroom— my schoolhouse — my life and my pride
In her wealth-bubble there by the sea—
In her Kingdumb there by DC
Recently reported, the Koch’s Joni Ernst called for a closed door meeting to plot to send Social Security over the cliff.
Both prosperity Catholics and evangelicals will back elimination of social safety nets because desperation creates more religion.
My favorite line: “In the Kingdumb by D.C.”
I am quite sure, Eddie Poe would replace Elizabeth Dee with Betsy Dee if he wrote this now.
Trump Swamp-
Arizona State University’s student newspaper reported the school’s director of the McCain Institute resigned from his position as U.S. Special Envoy to the Ukraine. Kurt Volker’s name came up in the whistleblower statement about Guiliani.
