New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza has given fat salary hikes to members of his inner circle. Some are earning more than Superintendents in other districts. Some have never been teachers.
Some have odd job titles.
What does the “Deputy Chancellor for School Climate and Wellness” do?
What does the “Deputy Chancellor for Community Empowerment and Partnerships” do?
What does the “Deputy Chancellor for School Planning and Design” do?
Whatever they do, they are paid more than $200,000 a year to do it.
Another BIG HEIST!
why was this man hired? did no one do research?
Thank you for reporting this, as it is very important to have transparency in what people are paid.
However, that link to the NY Post features the selective outrage of Eric Nadelstern, who was paid some $200,000 in DOE salary way back in 2010 when he was CEO of Bloomberg’s massive failure of Empowerment Schools — I call it a massive failure just like Nadelstern calls de Blasio’s efforts to help Renewal schools a massive failure. Like de Blasio, Nadelstern was given enormous resources and power and yet when he left it was clear that those exaggerated claims of working miracles and having huge success that made his outrageously high salary worth it were simply self-serving.
From the link:
Nearly 10 years ago Nadelstern insisted that he was absolutely worth the $200,000 (in 2010 dollars!) that he was paid. He believes his results were not meager! He performed miracles so he was worth every penny! Bloomberg merely recognized his superiority and rewarded him for it! It’s not like he wasted his time starting a universal pre-k program that serves 70,000 4 year olds each year! He ran Empowerment Schools and went around claiming enormous success! That’s worth a lot when it is a white guy doing it.
Will Nadelstern be a mensch and admit he was overpaid for wasting huge amounts of money, too? Or does he have one standard for white men who always, always deserve their outrageously high salaries even if they were utter failures accomplishing what they claimed they were doing?
Always trust an overpaid white guy to give a soundbite that implies he was worth every penny but those non-white “cronies” are not.
I can’t wait for the first day we report back to school so I can listen to some high paid grifter who has never taught blathering on about data and the latest miracle fad.
This seemed like a concerning story at first, but then I looked through the comments and learned that the real story is that Eric Nadelstern is a hypocritical racist.
I’m really trying hard to understand your motivations for posting your gratuitous comment.
All I can come up is one of the following:
You believed it was a concerning story at first, and after reading the NY Post link and the comments you thought it was informative to learn that the loudest critic of these high salaries in the article was himself earning a similarly high salary from the DOE nearly 10 years ago and you agree it seems hypocritical that he is insisting other appointees are overpaid. If that is the reason for your post, then we both agree that Nadelstern is a hypocrite.
On the other hand, perhaps you believed it was a concerning story and you believe Nadelstern deserved his high salary in a way that Carranza’s appointees do not and therefore you do not like that anyone would accuse Nadelstern of being a hypocrite with his criticism so you felt you had to make a snarky gratuitous remark about my post.
I have made it a point to ignore most of your comments that are all snark (and to be fair, you do on occasion post something informative and I read it and appreciate it) but if you are going to direct your snark at me for no good reason, then I will respond.
I’m going to assume that you don’t think Nadelstern was overpaid by Bloomberg’s DOE and that you find nothing hypocritical about Nadelstern’s attacks on DOE administrators many years later earning similarly high salaries to what he was paid by the DOE. I just wish you’d directly say that without the snark directed at me. Your belief that Nadelstern deserved his salary and isn’t being hypocritical when he criticizes other DOE high salaried employees is a reasonable opinion and you shouldn’t be afraid to just express it directly in reply to my post instead of offering up gratuitous snark.
Scanning the title I thought for a second it said teacher aides were getting a fat pay raise…aides and assistants everywhere are paid ridiculously low salaries. I guess those who actually work with students don’t deserve a living wage.
Ah..NYC chancellors and superintendents.
I remember one Chancellor…and his girl friend later wife the superintendent he appointed. Alverado… MRs Alverado ne Ms Fink.. decided that my voice was not needed, nor was the curriculum that attracted Harvard an the Pew Research put the Eastside school on the map. After all Gates had his curriculum ready to go… and I had to GO,too.
So , Ms. Fink ( who couldn’t get me for incompetence with the U of Pittsbrgh’s LRDC showing my work at they seminars (I was on elf 6 out of 20,00 teachers in the Pew study, who matched all principles of learning in a unique way) decided to find me guilty of Corporal punishment, with not a hint to me, no letter, no hearing, NADA. Into a rubber room I went. ^ months later I found out why, hired a lawyer and for 26K was allowed back into the school..now teaching a few kids each period –in a storeroom>> when I had been the teacher of the entire 7th grade –whichis why my kids were at the top of the state on the new ELA writing test… and I was GONE!
God bless superintendents. Well… not forever…she goes off to San Diego as chancellor , and a year later she is thrown out–>>>We don’t treat our teachers like that,” said the. President of the school board… which I saw on a TV program when I was visiting California.
Our chancellors Chew, Klein and other, is the reason this happened :”The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman” on Vimeo. https://vimeo.com/41994760
Oh… when corporal punishment did not work this shining superintendent– published a letter alleging that I told someone said I wanted to kill the principal…and I was back in the rubber room, even as I was the NYS Educator of Excellence.
is this America… and WTF was the UFT eh Randi? My husband called her and. asked her that… and (too late) and the UFT came to my rescue— and arbitrated me out of my job, but I got to keep my benefits.
Just proof professional educators are not running the schools. It would be nice if they were willing to spend $600 to buy for a school the Orton-Gillingham computer program that can teach 500 children how to read. Anyone have an inside with these people give them this information and maybe they might forgo a lunch and buy the program. JWor Enterprises, Inc.
