Last night, the elected Board of Education of the San Diego Unified School District passed a strong resolution endorsing four bills in the State Legislature that would impose discipline on the Wild West unregulated charter industry. The bills are described in the resolution. They would impose a moratorium on charter school expansion, revive local control, and increase oversight of charters. This resolution demonstrates that the board is willing to stand up to the rapacious charter industry.
Go San Diego! I miss teaching there sometimes. Some of the best teacher prep universities in the nation, more per capita than anywhere else, so therefore, some of the best public schools anywhere. (And when I refer to schools being ‘best’ or ‘great’ it’s just an opinion, not a test score or data ranking. That’s an important distinction.) It makes sense, given the high quality of education there, that SDUSD has stood up in opposition to standardized testing in the past, and is standing up in opposition to charter fund draining, waste, fraud, and abuse today.
LCT, I have posted here that San Diego is the best urban district in the nation. That’s still true. An enlightened school board and a superintendent who came up through the ranks as a teacher and a principal.
Yes indeed. And an experienced educator instead of an investment banker as schools superintendent, huh. What a novel idea. Hey Los Angeles, maybe we should try keeping the investment bankers in investment banking. Just a thought.
That sadly rarer and rarer thing: a superintendent who came up through the ranks
When non-educators took over education, things went to rat droppings.
