This is an amazing and eye-popping form of art, one I never saw before.
I think you will like it too.

Body painting is one of the world’s oldest art forms. Among the greatest practitioners of this art are friends of mine, Scott Fray and Madelyn Greco, who are the five-time world champion body painters. (Yes, there are international competitions in this art form.) Their amazing work can be found here: http://www.livingbrush.com/
Warning, that site is NSFW. Body painting involves work on unclothed bodies.

This is amazing work for a self-taught artist.
Little known factoid.
The formal principles for visual camouflage were developed in the late 1890s by a painter, Herbert Thayer, who grew up in New Hampshire in the 1850s. As a kid, he was “crazy about birds.” He studied painting at New York and Paris, later on returned to New Hampshire and concentrated on wild life painting. In doing so, he discovered the basic principles of camouflage, and with Gerome Bush, received a patent for countershading–a distruptive coloration, usually planned with a pattern to match a background.
That’s a long arc from being a kid …“crazy about birds”–to a painter of wildlife–to inventing a now taken-for-granted feature of atful illusions, even in warfare.
The dance community has been drawn to these illusionist possibilities in costumes, choreography, and lighting. I am also reminded of the appeal of transformer toys (and variants in film and video games) in addition to the classic Gestalt “figure/ground” demonstrations–Is that an old hag or a beautiful woman? Is that a duck or a rabbit?
Thayer is discussed here. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/a-painter-of-angels-became-the-father-of-camouflage-67218866/

I have been after Scott and Madelyn for a long time to write an illustrated history of bodypainting. They could use on such a project a person of your discernment and research skills and knowledge of art history, Laura! Always a great pleasure to read these posts from you!
