Valerie Jablow, parent activist in D.C., seems to know the District’s laws better than the members of the City Council.
She knows that the city can’t just give away or lease property to charter schools without following the law. Apparently the City Council doesn’t know that.
Read this account. Apparently the City Council is ready and willing to hand off public schools without going through legally required process.
In one instance, the city leased a property to a charter owner, who in turn sublet it back to the city and is making $200,000 a year on the deal!
Does anyone care about protecting the students and property of the D.C. public schools or are they just an afterthought?
The looting of public education continues. Public schools are being starved into failure and irrelevance. Same with public colleges. Must have the closure of charter schools as central plank of any candidate who runs for Pres. Must put the closing of charters and reversal of privatization at the top of demands when teachers go on strike.
YES; the full range of problems associated to privatizing must be listed and addressed. EACH aspect is debilitating, and not one should be swept under the rug as another element is grudgingly recognized.
Agreed.
Because I have donated to Democratic candidates in several states, I get surveys almost daily from presidential candidates asking which issue is most important to me. So far, not one has mentioned K-12 education. I write it in.
I’m getting daily text from Beto campaign, and I respond to every one, “I hate charter schools. Beto’s wife runs one. I can’t support him.”
For sure, in GOP dominated states and/or school districts (where the charter autocrats own the majority of a school board), laws are being ignored when it comes to closing public schools and opening vampire charter schools. And when the GOP also owns many of the judges in those same areas, even going to court is a challenge and those battles might last years to rise up out of the Repub Quicksand Swamp.
A close look at those states and districts might reveal a very high level of white collar criminals getting away with “murder” like in Arizona and Florida where elected state reps can own charter schools and vote to support those charter schools at the same time.
And D.C. wants to become a state? DIG DEEPER into WHY. Answer: KA-CHING.

In our case a “a dumb, lazy, rich, draft dodging kid” is holding the highest office in the land.” Our economy has become a lot more rigged under the current administration with all the deplorable billionaires in the cabinet setting policy. The tax scam is the worst example of getting working people to sacrifice for the 1%. It is a rigged redistribution of wealth, and so is privatization of public schools.
I sent this tweet to several commentators…”Tried to contact Hardball to urge question to Booker about why public school teachers do not trust him….often call him Cory Devos Booker…afraid of Bill Gates and Obama and charter school big shots? blank screen.”
