A student admonished the LAUSD board. His name is Tyler Okeke. He was fearless: unbought, unbought, an honest voice in a den of vipers.
He reminded the board that its first obligation was to the 500,000 students in public schools, not the well-represented students in charter schools, who had been lied to about what a moratorium meant. Their schools were not in danger.
“In a system where money is considered speech, those who cannot afford to buy a microphone are at a disadvantage. As the teachers’ union and the charter school industry spend millions influencing LAUSD elections, the students the District is supposed to serve struggle to have their voice heard. Fortunately for them, their lone representative on the School Board, Tyler Okeke, spoke for them at last Tuesday’s Board meeting in a voice that could not be silenced.”

Thank you, Carl. Just viewed it.
Please watch this student’s speech. It was electrifying. When you compare the wandering rants from board members Melvoin and Garcia, this hit the mark and put those two to shame.
Wonderful presentation, and thanks for making Tyler Okeke voice have a larger audience.
👏
All school boards should have a voting student representative.
I watched it on TV on Sunday, and it was beautiful. Then, Nick Melvoin complimented the wonderful speech quickly and with a dismissive hand gesture. Melvoin’s hair was stuck to his forehead as he then tried in vain and then quickly gave up on introducing five different amendments to weaken the charter moratorium. Reformsters don’t really listen to students. They use them.
Right on!
