During last spring’s historic teacher walkout in West Virginia, which closed every school in the state, Governor Jim Justice promised to block charter legislation.
He lied.
The legislature is set to pass both charters and vouchers.
Trachers in charters won’t need certification. Vouchers will include home schooling. Both bills mean less funding for the state’s underfunded public schools.
Gov. Justice could veto the bill but would it have gotten this far without his support?
He lied.
Shocked simply shocked. A Republican Red State Governor would lie. The entire party is a corrupt fraud.
We can talk about corporate Democrats another time. However, education is only one of many reasons to reject the likes of Booker. Time for some ” angry mobs”.
Well, I am amazed, just like Joel. I never knew a politician to mislead the public. I just don’t know what to do.
“It’s time. This is the time. We’re doing it,” Blair said. “It may not be perfect, that’s why we come back every year. Let’s move on and continue to help the people of West Virginia.”
So West Virginia teachers all went out on strike to get someone in state government to pay attention to public schools, and the state’s response is to fund charters and private schools?
Did anyone even mention the public school students and families, or where they completely ignored, again?
They can forget about getting any support for their public schools after this. It’ll be all charters and vouchers all the time now. Every legislative session will be devoted to granting a wish list for the charter lobby. They’ll be back next session and they’ll get every one of their demands.
harshest truth
DeVos gave another echo chamber interview bashing public schools and promoting charters and private schools:
“Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is the latest member of President Donald Trump’s inner circle to use the ready-made platform at conservative Sinclair Broadcast Group as an infomercial for the president’s agenda — this time, to promote education privatization.
DeVos filmed a softball interview with Sinclair chief political analyst (and former Trump aide) Boris Epshteyn that began airing on January 24 on local news stations across the country. In the portion of the interview aired so far, the education secretary promotes National School Choice Week”
It’s a shame we have to pay hundreds of federal employees to produce this propaganda that denigrates public school students, teachers and their schools.
This Wikipedia entry says it all:
“James Conley Justice II (born April 27, 1951) is an American coal mining and agriculture businessman and politician serving the 36th and current Governor of West Virginia since 2017. With a net worth of around $1.9 billion, he is the wealthiest person in West Virginia.[2] He inherited a coal mining business from his father and successfully built a massive business empire with over 50 companies, including The Greenbrier, a luxury resort. Justice is one of the few billionaires from the State of West Virginia.[3]
In 2015, Justice switched from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party and announced his candidacy for governor in the 2016 election. He ran as a Democrat and defeated the Republican nominee, Bill Cole. Less than seven months after taking office, Justice switched back to the Republican Party the day after announcing his plans at a President Trump rally in the state.”
A billionaire who changes political parties the way most people change their Facebook Profile pictures seems an unlikely person to trust…. and to think we have a person in the White House with the same kind of background… and at least two other billionaires with the same profile (Mr. Bloomberg and Mr. Schultz) who think that they alone can solve our problems…
This is indicative of a wider ailment under which American democracy is suffering -known as “Billionaire-itis”, it attacks the brain’s ethical center (Descartes’ pineal gland?!) causing chronic moral turpitude and rendering the patient hopelessly addicted to dark money and illegitimate political power. There is no cure except to totally excise the diseased vectors from the body politic.
