John Engler was the promoter of school choice inMichigan. As governor, he worked double time to break up public school districts and promote private choice.
Recently he was interim president of Michigan State.
No longer.
As Mercedes Schneider reports, Engler made some dumb, insulting comments about the young female athletes who were victimized by the university’s sports doctor Larry Nasser.
Engler is out.

Fixed it. The link is now there.
Engler, early involvement in the Koch’s ALEC… what a surprise. Theocracy Watch posted the Paul Weyrich manual which calls for parallel schools to destroy public education. Weyrich was the founder of ALEC, the Koch’s Heritage Foundation and the religious right (gives religion a bad name).
And not soon enough.
Engler owes his brief term as MSU interim president to former president Lou Anna Simon’s heel-dragging on Larry Nassar’s criminality. For him to take a gratuitous potshot at the survivors of Nassar’s crimes — arrogance? stupidity? do we need to coin a new word?
As a former faculty member in the MSU College of Education, I’m not yet ready to become a proud Spartan again, but Engler’s departure enables me to be a little less ashamed. Good riddance to a man with no apparent redeeming qualities.
Bill,
As a former faculty member, is Engler the reason the Dept. of Ed.’s EPIC center doesn’t have a tab that identifies its funders?
EPIC is working on a grant from DeVos’ Dept. of Ed. to help the private education industry sector along with Prof. Douglas Harris’s ERA center which is funded by John Arnold. (Tulane- private university)
UnKochMyCampus.org is introducing its model policy to prevent donor influence from eroding academic independence, on Jan. 22. If you still have colleagues at MSU, they could take a look at it for implementation in MSU’s departments?
One more biased opponent of public education bites the dust. He will not be missed.
Condemnation isn’t good enough a punishment for Engler.
