1. Kindergarten NOT The New First Grade
Kindergartners should be treated like the four and five-year-old students that they are and not pushed to be first graders. The activities and instruction for this age group are well established.
Real educators should take charge and ensure that there’s much free play and age appropriate activities.
2. School Systems NOT “Portfolio of Schools”
For years, corporate reformers have unfairly claimed that school systems fail. They want privatization through a portfolio of schools involving charters, private schools and choice. This will end public education.
We need efficient school systems for traditional public schools only, that serve all children.
Taxpayers don’t need to fund unproven portfolio schools they don’t own or control.
3. School Boards NOT Privatization Partners
School boards are critical to keeping public schools public. Elected officials must listen to the voices of those in the community that elect them. The school board is democracy at its finest.
However, school board members have signed on to unproven initiatives by the Gates, Broad, and Walton foundations and others. Newer groups like School Board Partners encourage school boards to carry out a privatization agenda. Outside groups include Stand for Children and The City Fund.
Ask those running for school board about their goals for schools before they are elected. Demand transparency.
4. Teachers NOT Teach for America
Teachers choose teaching as a career. Teach for America is a substandard turnaround teaching pool. Sending young college graduates into the classroom as real teachers makes no sense.
Here are the businesses and individuals that donate to this group. What if they donated to real teachers and smaller classrooms, or other school needs?
Renew the focus on teachers, their credentials, their preparation, and their support. Elevate their professional status to the importance teachers richly deserve.
5. Principals NOT New Leaders
Next to teachers, principals fulfill the critical job of running the school. Their jobs should be to support and evaluate good teaching fairly and compassionately. No one should become a principal unless they have classroom experience and adequate university preparation.
New Leaders was created to weaken the principalship. Individuals from outside education with no classroom experience are placed in school leadership positions. Like Teach for America, New Leaders weakens the structure of public education. They follow the privatization directives of philanthropists who seek school privatization.
Hire principals with long-term experience working with students. Ensure that they have the support and know-how to lead their schools in what matters.
6. Superintendents NOT CEO’s
Many state superintendents have little educational experience, or they have been through Teach for America. Often they are seen as CEOs overseeing a business. But schools are not businesses. Children are not products. Most of these superintendents have little to no experience with the children they are supposed to serve.
Many come from The Broad Academy where they learn how to collect data and transform schools to choice and charters. They are about school privatization.
Ensure that those who lead America’s schools have the right intentions and backgrounds to serve the needs of students.

We need to eradicate the language and business mindset that dominates so-called reform from our thinking. Business people have moved in on public schools. Nobody voted for them to come in and undermine public education. “Reform” is a top down class war more than an education movement. It has been imposed by the wealthy on everyone else.
Billionaires and corporations have shown they do not have all the answers. #45 is a prime example! George Bush was the MBA president, and look how that turned out. Rick Snyder was a billionaire businessman. His “leadership” in Michigan was a disgrace. Business people know profit, not people. Education is all about people, students, “not scholars,” as priority #1.

ret t, It would be a great day if Bill Gates supported giving all kids curriculum and activities as enriching as the private school he attended. I think the school uses standardized tests every few grades but doesn’t teach to the test.

Also watch out for Education Pioneers that creates a pipeline to put people with little education background (often TFA) in mid-level positions in districts for the purposes of privatization and corporate reform. According to their website they’ve placed 4,000 individuals mostly in districts as well as other education organizations. Such an impressive list. All common sense and good (even research-based) practice…
however too many new leaders (boards, state and federal legislators, associations, universities) and educators (most of whom have entered the profession post-NCLB) don’t know what they don’t know. Reform or the “reform-wars” is their “normal”
Hmmm – Could NPE send a Formal Request to the national associations (NSBA, National PTA, AASA, NASSP, NAESP, ILA, AERA…and State associations of each) to adopt these in their 2019-2020 Resolutions? Educate them and force them to respond.

This is obvious, but what is preventing it isn’t those who wish to privatize. Handing over complete control over local community schools to bureaucrats in your state who do the bidding of the federal government, not local communities for the almighty dollar is the cause for the demise of the public school system.
If you complain about corporations on one side of the political aisle and ignore your corrupt side, you, also, are the problem. “Privatization” is occurring because elites on both sides want to cash in off the small backs of children. Personalized learning, for example, is a construct of big, evil tech shoving its devices and apps into the classroom, not to deliver a higher quality education to anyone, but to collect and cash in on children/family data.
All this control in the hands of bureaucrats and politicians in bed with big tech is here to stay and increase until the citizens wake up, stop sniping at each other about stupid R and D divisions, and force our government to break up big tech, regulate big tech, return local control by abolishing current fed ed laws and regulations and possibly creating a new, streamlined, sane law to take care of things like the rights of students with special needs, etc., gut the state and fed bureaucracy altogether or at least down to a few really good pencil sharpeners, create a higher quality teacher certification system free of special interest influence, remove lobbyist and special interest influence over local school boards, and get back to allowing high-quality teachers to teach, and principals and superintendents to administrate.
Fed ed sucks the life out of innocent human children. Fed ed laws currently blanket the crazy over ALL schools that bow to its handout, lest you worry too hard that “privatization” will destroy public schools. Any stupid school that accepts public dollars is chained to the same accountability mandates. The only choice on the table there is the building the child receives a shitty education in.
For the time being, privately-funded private schools and homeschooling remain a high-quality choice, but the control freaks in both parties are gunning for them, too.
