Valerie Jablow, a D.C. public school parent, keeps close watch on the politics of the District of Columbia schools. In this post, she shows how the Mayor, Muriel Bowser, ignored the letter of the law, which says that the Chancellor Selection Committee should be composed of teachers, parents, and students of the D.C. public schools; why a judge allowed her to ignore the law; and how she added a significant number of people (8 of 19) who are closely identified with the interests of the charter lobby.
The selection panel meets today.
ITs an everlasting battle. Here in NYC, word has come out that the city was considering enrollment for charters. Yes, thats is correct. What has come out in NYC is that the city almost created a system whereby charters were incorporated into the enrollment process for nyc students.
In this scenario, students and parents would select a charter school the same way they would choose a public school in the NYC system. Currently, if a student wants to go to a charter they have to go over to that particular school and enroll.
NYC almost adopted a system whereby enrollment for charters and public would be joined together making charters appear as though they are just regular public schools. This scam will be coming to a neighborhood near you. Be aware.
Still so many on the moneyed side of life who really believe that the charter game can and will “fix” problems with poor students/poor neighborhoods while eliminating “bad” teachers.
ciedie,
you are so right. I have been exchanging emails with a few charter backers who will not believe anything unless they hear it from charter operators. When it comes from them, they are credulous and believe anything.
I sense a court battle in the making.
