Brett Kavanaugh’s performance yesterday was outrageous. He was in turns aggressive, maudlin, self-pitying, angry, bitter, and shockingly rude to Democratic senators, especially the women. He bitter attack on Senator Amy Klobuchar (for which he later apologized) showed a lack of self-control, a depth of hatred that should have disqualified him on the spot. I do not believe that he will give a fair hearing to plaintiffs whose politics he does not share. He will cast his vote to roll back women’s rights, abortion rights, civil rights, voting rights, gay marriage, and any other causes he associates with liberalism, which he despises. He made clear that he is a deeply partisan Republican and cannot tolerate dissent from his views. No wonder the White House has refused to released thousands of documents that he authored and/or signed. One can imagine him as an advocate for torture and every reprehensible action that occurred during his time in the second Bush administration. He is an angry man.
Educator and author Steve Nelson writes:
What America saw on display yesterday was the barely contained rage of a functioning alcoholic.
Brett Kavanaugh’s adolescent response to every question about drinking was characteristic of a serous alcohol problem. To one Senator, “What do you like to drink?” he asked. To Amy Klobuchar , “Have you blacked out?” He proudly said, several times, “I liked beer! I like beer now!” As with many alcoholics, the defiant emphasis on “beer” was supposed to make it “fun” not serious. Boys and their brewskis. I very much doubt that Kavanaugh limits his alcohol to beer, but that is a very common technique to minimize the idea of heavy drinking. It just a few pops, folks, nothing to look at here.
This is relevant because his entire affect was typical of the stunted emotional growth of a lifelong heavy drinker. His temperament throughout the hearing was combative and occasionally sarcastic. He reminded me of an aging rugby teammate, not a thoughtful federal judge.
I am among those who find Christine Blasey Ford (and the other accusers) credible. For that reason he should be rejected. But he also lacks the temperament and wisdom to serve on the nation’s highest court.

As if we needed any reminding, he revealed himself to be a far right wing/libertarian apparatchik with an angry, toxic and venomous disposition. Elections have consequences. One can only pray that Ginsburg and Breyer can hold out until 2020.

His hissing, sneering vitriol about “the left wing” and “the Clintons” peeled the last bit of political veneer off the charade of this nomination and links it inextricably to that of Merrick Garland.
And for those of you who need any proof about white male privilege (especially if you have Ivy League connections) in this country, may I present Brett Kavanaugh, Charles Grassley and Orrin Hatch as Exhibits A, B, and C?

I like and agree with one of the quotes I heard this morning, don’t know who to attribute it to: “I’ve never met Brett Kavanaugh, but I’ve met many Brett Kavanaughs.” I get that on a variety of levels.
Also, Sheldon Whitehouse summarizes it perfectly again after walking out of the committee hearing today: “I have never seen such a display of vengeful, partisan conspiracy theory behavior from somebody seeking any judgeship, let alone a seat on the Supreme Court.”

While Orrin Hatch is a complete slimeball (and I have NEVER once voted for him in Utah), he didn’t have an Ivy League education, unless the University of Pittsburgh is considered Ivy League. He went to Brigham Young University here in Utah, which is his whole claim for living in Utah, as he is from Pennsylvania. Some of us consider him as just an out-of-stater, who runs in Utah because he’s Mormon and can win here. See also Mitt Romney. Some of us would really like to see someone who is actually from Utah, and not just a Mormon passing through, to be in a leadership position. It’s too much to ask in Utah, which voted for Trump even though the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) have rebuked many of his philosophies, and continue to do so.

Diane, re: K & Gorsuch attending the same MD private Catholic prep school. I suspect they are of different stripes based on their college fraternities. K was a member of Deke [DKE] at Yale. At Cornell in the ’60’s that was a hard-drinking jock fraternity. A quick google search reveals Yale’s chapter is currently well-known for sexual assault:

Gorsuch attended Columbia & belonged to Fiji (Phi Gamma Delta) — in my day at Cornell a fun-loving, partying group w/o the ‘hard’ overtones. Google reveals nothing of note.

Kavanaugh’s roommates at Yale said he was a heavy drinker. One of them said that the bathroom in his suite, shared by three students, was often covered with vomit, and Kavanaugh was the primary pucker.
Curiously, my younger son was at Yale at the same time as K. My son did not know him but knew one of his roommates. He said K. was a nasty and belligerent drunk.

What an amazing coincidence! And more corroboration.
Perhaps not so coincidental: K’s membership in the same Yale frat that was thrown off campus for 5 yrs due to its “hostile sexual environment” – & already the subject of several sexual assault investigations since it re-opened Fall ’16!

Ruth Ginsburg reminds me of the Hyman Roth character in “Godfather Part 2”. She might think that she is going to live forever. Once there is a majority of constitutionalists on the S.C., some of the more liberal members might decide to retire.
LikeLike
I recall reading that Ginsburg was thinking of retiring before Obama left office until the GOP pulled its stunt about a year before the 2016 elections and refused to allow the Senate to vote on Garland, Obama’s nomination to the SC.
If Garland had filled the vacancy created by the death of Antonin Scalia, I think she would have followed through.
If Russia hadn’t meddled in the election and if Comey (a lifelong Republican until Trump fired him) hadn’t held that press conference (that broke the rules in law inforcement that you don’t talk about an investigation to the media/public until it is done) days before the 2016 election about Hillary’s e-mails, then for sure, Ginsburg would have retired during Hillary Clinton’s Presidency. But with Trump, she will hold on to every heartbeat and breath she can in a painful gamble to outlast that walking Ebola virus in the White House.

Sorry to say so, but Ginsberg should have retired right after Obama’s election so he could have picked a justice in her mold who was 30 years younger. Should she become incapacitated, Trump gets a third pick.
The oldest Republican judge on the court now is Thomas, and he is 69.
Ginsberg is 85.

Judge Ginsburg is the poster child for term limits. In 1789, people did not live into their 80s. Granting “life” tenure had an entirely different meaning and schedule.

Also noteworthy that today the American Bar Association has urged delaying the vote until a full investigation can be done. Some Republican US Senators cited the ABA report o Kavanaugh as one of the reasons they supported his nomination. Will these same Senators NOW follow the ABA’s advice?

Donnelly to vote ‘no’ on Kavanaugh
Sen. Joe Donnelly (Ind.), one of only three Democrats who voted for President Trump’s first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, says he will oppose Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s second pick to the high court.
Donnelly, who is in a tough reelection campaign in a state that Trump carried by double digits in 2016, had been considered one of the Democrats most likely to back Kavanaugh.

Linda,
I would be thrilled to see Manchin defeated in a primary. But if the Democrats squeak out 51 Senate seats and he joins the Dems to pick the Senate leader and control committees, I’ll call him a very very conservative but very real Democrat. I like to distinguish them from the real DINOs like NY State Senator (and pretend Democrat) Jeffrey Klein who got defeated in the primary. Klein actually caucused with Republicans to make certain Republicans had control! His defeat (and the defeat of the other “we run as Dems but make sure Republicans have power” DINOs in the NY primary was one of the very few bright spots in these dark days.
If Manchin becomes like those DINOs and caucuses to keep Mitch McConnell running the Senate instead of a Democrat, he is less than useless. But so far, none of the right wing Dems in the Senate have sunk that low.
Diane, I apologize for the dig. Got carried away after watching these last 2 dark days and can’t help imagining what might have been. I fully expect that despite so much blatant perjury, Kavanaugh will join the Court. And unless the Democrats take both houses in November, I’m actually doubting the survival of our democracy. Very sad days to watch entitled overprivileged right wingers getting away with whoppers once again.

Kavanaugh likely was told to apologize to Klobuchar for his revolting behavior as a bridge too far, but he made the same kind of responses to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse earlier in the hearing. Beginning at 1:13 in this video, he talks over Whitehouse while proclaiming how much he likes beer.
Three times he talks over Whitehouse, “I like beer, I don’t know if you do Senator, do you like beer, or not? What do you like to drink?”
So the next time the GOP makes noises about comity and decorum in the Senate, remember that Grassley killed it by not using the gavel and calling out Kavanaugh this first time he disrespected a US Senator. Had Grassley acted, the shameful exchange with Klobuchar likely would never have occurred.

Senate panel just voted along party lines to send Kavanaugh nomination to full Senate.
11-10.
Joe Donnelly of Indiana announced he would vote against Brett, even though he is a Democrat running a tight race in a Red state.
Let’s see what Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Joe Minchin of W. Va. do.
If they vote for Brett Kavanaugh, they are voting to eliminate Roe v.Wade, roll back civil rights, gay rights, voting rights.
Why was the Senate panel afraid to reopen the FBI investigation? Why did they not call Mark Judge? He was in the room where it happened. He is hiding in a beach house in Delaware, an hour or so from D.C.
The American Bar Association, which had rated Kavanaugh as “well qualified,” issued a statement calling for an FBI investigation to precede the vote.
Republicans know that if they secure the 5th vote on the Supreme Court, they can strike down any laws that Dems pass when they win back Congress.

I think you were reading my mind when you wrote that first sentence. His obsession with wanting to talk about beer to represent himself as a regular person reveals extensive coaching by Kellyanne. You make nothing but salient points.
To pick up on what Diane noted above about the high school attended by the Trump Twins, what most people around the country don’t realize is that they come from virtually hermetically sealed universes. Their real life experiences are so limited—geographically, intellectually, socially—that part time “coaching” of a girls rec basketball team counts as significant life experience. For most of us that’s Tuesday.
They attended schools and socialized among a very select few. Growing up in a DC milieu that does not know crime, want, discrimination, the daily challenge of getting to where you need to be when you need to be there, or pretty much anything the majority of people in the DC area have to do. Their “turf” was probably not much more than a few dozen square miles.
This was repeated in their college experience, just in a different place. Then they returned to the warmth of their DC cocoon, where futures in their circles are mostly determined long before they graduate from high school. The details just need to be worked out, but we’ll make sure they remain part of our class, after all we know better. But hey, they drink beer, so they must be just like farmers, steelworkers, factory workers, and other average folks out here; they must be like us! (sarcasm alert)

Two vulnerable Democratic senators in the midst tight re-election races — Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly and Montana Sen. Jon Tester — both announced they would oppose K******.
“I have deep reservations about Judge K******’s nomination to this lifetime position and, as I stated, we have been unable to get all the information necessary regarding this nomination,” Donnelly said. “While I would gladly welcome the opportunity to work with President Trump on a new nominee for this critically important position, if Judge K******’s nomination comes before the full Senate for a vote under these circumstances, I will oppose it.”
Tester also said he has “deep concerns about the allegations of sexual assault against Judge K*******. Unfortunately, Judge K****** couldn’t find time to discuss these concerns with me in person, so the only information I have is from what he said in his hearings. I’ll be voting against him.”
