Historians in the future will debate whether Trump was a liar, an incompetent, or senile. No, they are debating it now. Maybe his ego is so fragile that he can never acknowledge failure or fault.
He tweeted this morning that Democrats inflated the number of deaths in Puerto Rico to embarrass him. His administration’s work in Puerto Rico, he did, was “an unsung, tremendous success.”
Alexandra Petri wrote in the Washington Post:
“3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000……..This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico. If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list. Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!” -President Trump, in two tweets “
Three thousand people did not die in Puerto Rico. This is a great relief.
The 70 year-old woman who could not get medical care or keep her insulin cold in an apartment without power — she did not die.
The old man in a hospital where there was no power to give him dialysis for four days after the storm hit — he did not die.
The mother whom the ambulance, facing spotty cell reception and congested roads, could not reach until far too late — she did not die.
Thousands did not die months after the hurricane hit, as the recovery stalled, as the island still struggled with contaminated water and unreliable power, with blocked roads and long doctors’ lines. These are just statistics, concocted for political reasons.
Three thousand people did not die.
The empty shoes that lined up in front of the capitol in San Juan belong to people who are still among us. They did not die; they will come and step back into their shoes. They will walk back up functional roads and sit in their houses where the electricity is working. They will laugh with relief that this was not a real disaster, nothing like Katrina. They will fill glasses with water that is safe to drink. They will live on an island where the recovery has been progressing with alacrity and competence. They are all alive; you can see them, crowding around, cheering, demanding paper towels. They did not die; your work was sufficient; their lives are not on your conscience. It is an incredible unsung success.
Resources were not scant, volunteers were not underqualified and stretched too thin. Water that was dropped off for them did not languish first in storage and then on a runway for a year. The water system is not still questionable.
Three thousand people did not die. This is not human devastation of unthinkable proportions; it is just numbers, a list drawn up by Democrats, signifying nothing.
These disasters are much smaller than we are led to believe. They only appear tremendously big and tremendously wet from a distance.
Afterward, they leave no lasting devastation in their wake. They start and end as quickly as the news cycle. They require no continued focus, no sustained work. Perhaps there are no real tragedies; there are only periodic incidents to give crisis actors needed employment. People did not die. These are just trumped-up numbers. This tragedy is nothing that cannot be mopped up with a paper towel.
They did not die. It is a comforting thought. The alternative would be unthinkable.

Historians of this. My Lord. What a concept!!! The indelible stain. The nadir of Repugnicanism.

What is incredibly heartbreaking about Puerto Rico is that the death & destruction is ongoing…will it stop anytime soon?
No, because now we have new storms, more destruction & more human death & desperation coming up on the East Coast. & even though Trump & co. would consider this to be the REAL America (unlike Puerto Rico), FEMA, et. al. is NOT prepared to avail (even) adequate assistance.
After all, they just had funding taken from their agency & plied into I.C.E.
More for-profit refugee detention centers will get the funds meant for hurricanes & other natural (much not-so-natural, as hastened by climate change) disasters.

One of my replies t the WaPo article:
But all Americans were watching the lousy job Trump’s FEMA did at ‘possessions’ Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico during back-to-back hurricanes (both of which places are still in ruins long later) — so as Flo threatens SE US, polls show distrust of how Trump’s FEMA will perform on mainland — just in time for midterm elections. I hate to make political hay at cost of lives, but am glad to put Trump on the spot given the timing. You go, Trump: bring it!

Thank goodness for Trump who can come and throw paper towels at the problem. Of course people don’t die when their homes are demolished, there is no electricity, no medicine, no roads that function, no communication due to downed lines, no clean water to drink and no food to eat. It’s a hoax put out by Democrats.

It sounds like there are no 1st amendment rights allowed in North Carolina. Instead, it is deliberate censorship to fool the public and justify destroying the environment for profit and power.
The same in Florida and Arizona, I think.

Video: Hurricane Maria Killed Our Loved Ones. We Want Closure
By Leah Varjacques, Matteen Mokalla and Japhet Weeks
The 2017 hurricane killed 70 times more people in Puerto Rico than the official estimate. As relatives of unrecognized victims, how can we begin to heal?
In the video op-ed above, family members of victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico demand the government treat Puerto Ricans with the respect they deserve and better prepare for this year’s hurricane season. In May, a Harvard-funded, household-based survey calculated that the death toll of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico is likely 70 times greater than the official estimate. The study put the number of deaths at 4,645. This inspired a Puerto Rican journalist, Gloribel Delgado Esquilín, to co-found Proyecto 4645, a social-media-based movement to promote healing for the relatives of unrecognized victims of the hurricane. The project created an installation in front of Puerto Rico’s Capitol with hundreds of the dead’s shoes, calling on the island’s governor to recognize the real magnitude of the devastation.
Gloribel Delgado Esquilín is a Puerto Rico-based writer and artist.

Poll: Puerto Rican residents see a failure at all levels of government
Puerto Ricans sharply rebuke President Trump, along with the federal and local governments, for last year’s response to Hurricane Maria…
Nearly a year after Maria hit Puerto Rico, people say they are still struggling with basic necessities. Fully 83 percent reported either major damage to their homes, losing power for more than three months, employment setbacks or worsening health problems, among other effects of the storm. The power is spotty, and many are leery of drinking the water. Roads are damaged, dangerous and difficult to navigate – like “the surface of the moon,” according to one resident – and in some places, the roadways remain impassible….
Survey findings support the widespread nature of deaths related to the storm, with about 1 in 5 Puerto Rico residents saying a close friend or family member died either from injuries caused by the storm or because they were unable to get sufficient water, food or medical care in the months afterward.
The Post-Kaiser poll confirms anecdotal reports of people fleeing Puerto Rico after the storm, with 68 percent of island residents saying they know a close friend or family member who has moved away from the island since Maria. Overall, about 1 in 4 of those who remain are seriously considering also moving away….
“Not only did Maria affect their homes and electricity, which is necessary to keep their insulin at the right temperature, the supplies disappeared,” said Zayas, who worked around the clock after the storm to help those with diabetes. “The pharmacies were not open, the doctors were not available, the hospitals had no electricity . . . that became a nightmare. Many of them suffered complications due to the lack of medications.”
The storm also made it extremely difficult for many on the island to access drinking water; about 1 in 5 drank water from a natural source after the storm.
Pachaco said he went to a nearby mountain to draw drinking water from a spring for about four months after Maria hit.
“It was rough,” he said. Now, he refuses to drink the tap water. “It tastes like mud. If you drink it, you feel like your mouth is filled with dirt.”..

Who Left a Huge Stockpile of Bottled Water Sitting on a Puerto Rico Landing Strip?…Snopes
On 20 September 2017, Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico and became the worst natural disaster to befall that island in recorded history. The storm damaged or destroyed more than 85% of the island’s houses, leaving more than 50,000 residents displaced and without access to shelter, food, or potable water for days afterwards.
It came as a shock to many, therefore, when nearly a year later reports emerged that thousands — possibly millions — of water bottles meant for victims of Hurricane Maria had been languishing on a landing strip managed by the U.S. federal government in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, rather than being distributed to hurricane victims desperately in need of drinking water:
According to the government of Puerto Rico, they didn’t initially distribute the water because it was in FEMA’s custody, and that agency had not delivered or released it to them. The Puerto Rican government claims that not until April 2018 did FEMA notify them that the “excess inventory” of bottled water was available to them — but after they finally began distributing the bottles the following month, residents complained that “the water had a foul odor and had a bad taste” and distribution was halted:…
