In a strong article in the New York Time, Charles Blow notes how many times Trump has singled out women and African-Americans as “dumb” or worse.
He writes:
Donald Trump has a penchant for labeling particular people. It might strike some as just another insult for a petulant urchin of a man who insults everyone with whom he takes issue. But I believe that the nature of his insults to specific kinds of people says something more about the character and nature of the man, something of which he may or may not be aware.
I believe that the fact that he so often attacks the intellectual capacity of women and minorities exposes a racial and gender bias, one that has a long history and a wide acceptance.
On Friday, Trump tweeted:
“Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!”
Lemon, a CNN anchor, was interviewing James about the school James was opening in Akron for at-risk students. During the interview, James accurately noted:
“We’re in a position right now in America, more importantly, where the race thing has taken over because I believe our president is kinda trying to divide us.”
Hover over the irony here: The man trying to help at-risk children by opening doors for them was being attacked by the man who has put children at risk by locking them in cages.
On Thursday at a Pennsylvania rally, Trump repeated the sobriquet he has assigned to California Representative Maxine Waters, calling her, “Very low I.Q. low. Low I.Q.”
This attack on a woman seems to me even more important than the racial question. Might it also have some racial underpinning? Definitely. With his history, Trump requires that all his actions be examined through a racial lens.
If these denigrations of the intelligence of Waters existed in isolation, one might well be able to write them off as fluke or coincidence, but they do not exist in isolation.
A review of the many insults Trump has spouted since he declared his candidacy finds that although he has called many people dumb, or dummies or low I.Q., the targeting of that particular insult at women, including minority women, occurs with curious frequency and is often a singular line of attack against them, rather than one of many.
He has called MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski “dumb as a rock,” “low I.Q.,” and “crazy and very dumb.”
He has called HLN anchor S.E. Cupp and political commentator Ana Navarro “two of the dumbest people in politics,” and has called Cupp “one of the dumber pundits on TV.”
He has called Republican consultant Cheri Jacobus “really dumb” and “a real dummy.”
He has called Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin “one of the dumber bloggers.”
He has said of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg that she “has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me.”
He has said of the journalist Mary Katharine Ham that she “isn’t smart enough to know what’s going on at the border.”
He has called the Forbes writer Clare O’Connor a “dummy” multiple times.
He has said that Maria Cardona made Morning Edition contributor Cokie Roberts look “even dumber” than he believed she was on a news show.
He has called Arianna Huffington, founder of HuffPost, a “dummy.”
I read in these comments an overt misogyny that has long existed in this country and the world, one that seeks to undercut the seriousness and cerebral capacity of women, to render them as emotionally unsuitable for deep deliberative analysis….
“Women had campaigned actively for suffrage in America since 1848, when delegates met at Seneca Falls, New York, for the first Woman’s Rights Convention. But convincing a majority of men to empower women was a tall order. Most people, male and female alike, believed that women were biologically unfit for politics. According to one orator at a mass meeting in Albany, New York, ‘A woman’s brain involves emotion rather than intellect, [which] painfully disqualifies her for the sterner duties to be performed by the intellectual faculties.’ Even those who thought women might be capable of political activity, often decided that the family had to come first. ‘Housewives!’ announced a Massachusetts journal, ‘You do not need a ballot to clean out your sink spout.’ ”
And yet, 170 years on, we have a president of the United States questioning women’s intelligence.

Trump represents the ugly American magnified a hundred times. In addition to racism and misogyny, he is shallow, greedy, impulsive, lying, judgemental, vile, crooked, and he cheats on his wife du jour. He should be on every patriotic American’s “got to go list.”

We all know instances of illegal voting. Virginia was a hot bed of it. Mike Pence could not do his investigations started because the state auditors would not give him information. If your state is like mine–people from strongly liberal cities would “temporarily move” to the conservative side at election time and vote their person in and then go back home and change their registration again. It is perfectly legal. This kind of voting affects our representation in congress and our state legislature.
It is very unfortunate that death threats and harassment seems to be the order of the day—for some people. Conservatives are generally just that–we don’t rant and rave and try to drown out the opposition. We are not marchers or screamers nor do we wear crazy or menacing costumes. We are not fascists, Nazis, or racists.
These are the words that have been used to describe the president by you college educated individuals that have also been used to describe his supporters merely because we support DJT for what he can and has gotten accomplished:
Racist, misogynist, sexist, homophobe, shallow, greedy, impulsive, lying, judgmental, vile, crooked, adulterer, orange menace, demagogue, divisive, narrow, self centered, unmerited privileged, and dangerous.
I assure you that this rhetoric is not helpful. The president has said that he will attack anyone who goes after him (unlike presidents of the past who accomplished little by taking it on the chin). The simple solution is to stop with the nastiness and try to work together. This country is broken. Political parties and identity politics are breaking our democracy. Stop with this anger and start talking to each other. News commentators and some journalists are trying to divide us with false narratives or lying by omission. We know who the partisan commentators are—you know where they stand. I resent feeling that the news is all a lye or that the FBI was corrupted at the top or that the CIA and intelligence community can’t keep a secret and other governmental agencies have been politicized where ordinary citizens are being denied fairness. This is madness.
I thought Dianne was going to stop the political commentaries!!

Three Million Votes in Presidential Election Cast by ‘Illegal Aliens’?
Zero evidence has been put forth to support the widely parroted claim that 3 million “illegal aliens” voted in the 2016 presidential election.

Three million non-citzens voted illegally in the 2016 presidential election.

ORIGIN
On 14 November 2016 — not even a week after the results of the 2016 presidential election were announced — our inbox exploded with messages requesting that we investigate the claim that more than three million votes were cast by “illegal immigrants” or “illegal aliens” (non-citizens). In some cases it was also claimed that these three million voters are “under investigation” for fraud, or that three million votes for Hillary Clinton will be “voided” because they were illegal. Under federal law, non-citizens cannot vote in a presidential election.
The first thing we found was that while no such claim has been reported in the mainstream media, it has been repeated on scores of partisan, right-leaning web sites since the 8 November election under the guise of “news.”

April,
In Wisconsin we all know that the Republicans were voting three times each while Democrats were forbidden to enter the precincts.
In Pennsylvania, we all know that Trump voters were allowed 10 votes per person while anyone with a Hillary Clinton yard sign was not allowed to vote.
In Virginia, we all know that voters like April were given 50 ballots to vote for Trump in each precinct but no Democrats could vote. And of course, Trump voters would vote in 10 different precincts — it was perfectly legal.
It is very unfortunate that for Trump voters, death threats and harassment against Democrats seems to be the order of the day.
Democrat voters are just that, people who believe in democracy and everyone voting (but just once). Democrats don’t rant and rave and try to drown out the opposition and unlike Republicans, they only vote once. it’s a shame to watch so many Trump voters who prevent each person to vote while those very same Trump voters vote hundreds of times each.
If you don’t believe me, April, it’s because I am getting my evidence from the same source you get yours — from the troll factory. I cannot speak for all here but I expect there are some like me who, as a denizen of NYC from mid-’70’s to early ’90’s & NJ since then, come by our opinion of him from watching him in action for decades. College education not required: he made a media splash wherever he went & was never shy, bragging about his lifestyle & bloviating his opinions; his investment successes and flops and bankruptcies and stiffing subs and shady deals and hiring illegals was all there to be read about, as well as his womanizing & shabby treatment of wives. When posters on here demand that we treat right wing trolls posting utter nonsense without one shred of evidence (Mike Pence tried so hard to stop all the illegal voting by Democrats but was prevented from doing anything by the evil Democrats!) as if it was anything but right wing trolldom, they are revealing their motives.
Until the propaganda became so widespread, no one was demanding that we take seriously those spewing hated, racism, xenophobia, and lie after lie and politely “debate” them. We were expected to call out their lies and the fact that they are propagandists, not people interested in facts.
Now certain elements insists that they be treated politely. See, we should offer our evidence that millions of voters didn’t vote illegally and the trolls should say that millions did and Americans should be left thinking “well we just don’t know and since it could be true, I will vote for Trump.”
When posters on here demand that lies be “debated” instead of being called out as lies, then they have an agenda that is not about democracy.

We teachers need to confront the fact that 35% of our students are liable to form the next generation of Trumpsters. What can we do differently to prevent this? Why aren’t we teachers talking about this? We act as if we have no part to play.
Here’s what I think would help:
An anti-con-man curriculum. Teach about the origins of “snake oil salesman” and teach many concrete examples of people getting conned…cults like Jonestown, etc. And teach the psychology of mesmerism, cult following, etc. This will make people on guard, at least.
To help them sniff out falsehood though, I see no way around building as robust a knowledge-base as possible. If you’ve learned what con trails are, you’re less likely to believe in “chem trails”. If you know about the EPA and USDA, you’re less likely to think the federal government is a conventicle of demons. If you’ve had the mechanism of the greenhouse effect clearly explained to you, you’re less likely to believe that global warming is a giant con. Knowledge is the only fumigant. Unfortunately most teachers don’t believe this. They believe knowledge is tangential; that teachers should impart in students an all-purpose “critical thinking skill” that will slay all cons. I have yet to find a single teacher who can convince me he knows how to do this. I have no idea how to do this. If this is do-able, someone please explain how it’s done.

Actual knowledge WOULD be better, but so much claimed as knowledge is opinion. Global warming hasn’t happened beyond the range of error in measurement. Thus, that global warming is in fact happening my or may not be so. It is a belief or opinion at the present moment. Those who claim it is a fact thus are indoctrinating their students rather than teaching even critical thinking. Range of error is not a simple concept. It requires a good deal of critical thinking.

Do you think there is a lack of information available? Your students are choosing information sources once they graduate. Doing so on the basic ethos that mold their Worldviews. I doubt there is anything you could factually impart to them to change this.
I suspect it takes real-life events to crash into these belief systems to change them. As such the safety net is its own worst enemy. We are a victim of our success. For example, unemployment insurance allows workers to think of it as an earned entitlement rather than a benefit of a progressive state. A construction worker out of work for over a year would never think of it as welfare. Neither does he see the Prevailing wages he receives on public works as a minimum wage law.
Don’t provide federal and state relief to victims of storms or fires and watch the views on Climate, change.
We could start by bringing back the draft. With our endless wars, plenty of Americans could have the joy of being on the receiving end of automatic weapons fire or a roadside bomb. Or sending their children off to do so. Cleverly the volunteer Army took the issue off of the table and allowed a generation of draft dodgers and their children to become “Flag waving, jelly-bellied armchair patriots. ”
Standing for the anthem would become a non-issue.

He is daring the institutions of democracy to do something about him. He is daring the system to work the way it’s supposed to work. Tell Congress: Protect our borderlands, don’t fund Trump’s wall!
It’s up to you to act now while this wall can still be stopped.
To avert a government shutdown in March, Congress approved $1.6 billion for a border wall with Mexico, giving Donald Trump the green light to waste valuable taxpayer dollars – not to mention putting their stamp of approval on his administration’s dangerous immigration agenda.
Now they’re poised to do it again: Trump is threatening to shut down the government in September if he doesn’t receive $25 billion more for his senseless wall. Further funding these actions would be a disaster – tearing families apart, creating environmental destruction at the border, further militarization of the borderlands terrorizing communities, and severely misusing taxpayer funds. We can’t let that happen, which is why our coalition stands in solidarity with immigrants, refugees, Muslims and all those who are threatened by the Trump Administration.

Here’s the latest turn from the racists in the Trump administration. I mentioned before that members of Trump’s inner circle are affiliated with the hate group Federation for American Immigration Reform (so identified by the Southern Poverty Law Foundation), including Jeff Sessions, Kellyanne Conway, Kris Kobach, Stephen Miller and the new ombudsman for USCIS, Julie Kirchner. This is what we get when racists are in charge: stripping away green cards and removing all paths to citizenship from LEGAL immigrants.
“Charles, the Haitian green-card holder who works as a nursing assistant in a psychiatric hospital near Boston, said he was stunned to learn his application for citizenship had been denied. He had used a fake passport given to him by smugglers when he entered the U.S. from Haiti in 1989, but confessed to border officers and received a waiver from USCIS absolving him of his wrongdoing and allowing him to obtain a green card in 2011.
Now 55, Charles is a homeowner and a taxpayer and thought obtaining citizenship would be a smooth process. ‘I thought in this country everything was square and fair,’ Charles said.
But when he went for his citizenship interview in August 2017, the USCIS officers told him they were going to revisit the decision to waive the fake passport incident, meaning he could potentially lose his green card as well.”

Wild fires are causing a lot of damage. Here is proof that Trump speaks with no knowledge behind what he is saying. His ‘superior intelligence’ is flunking.
…………….
…But the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says it has more than enough water to fight the blazes. “We’re having no issues with water supplies,” said Scott McLean, a deputy chief with the agency said.
In fact, some of the largest of the 17 wildfires in the state are burning near some of its largest lakes. Reservoirs like Trinity and Shasta lakes supply water for fighting the Carr Fire. And the Mendocino Complex Fire, now the largest wildfire on record in California, to the south is right on Clear Lake.
And dousing flames with water is only one way state and federal governments extinguish forest fires. Firefighters also deploy chemical fire retardants and clear lines of vegetation to contain blazes.
“I don’t understand it,” McLean added when asked about Trump’s tweets. “I was surprised like everybody else.”

It’s so against everything American, it really is. I hope we can flip this and save democracy. If we can’t, I have to believe fascism will take over in America. That will be the death of democracy, this 200-something year old experiment. “

Trump is part of the fabric of America. This country was founded on racism and hate. America still believes in lynching and when given the opportunity to put children in cages who are not white, they do. Trump is just the current loudmouth who let all the haters know that it is ok, to murder people, under the name of the law, it is ok to poison the water of minorities, separate parents from there children, Unions allow terrible schools in the minority zip codes and talk a good game about how we care for all the children. Politicians use minorities for phot ops but never give us a seat at the table.
Trump is the mouthpiece, this is a country of haters and gated white communities. Trump is following a long line of political haters so there is nothing new about him except social media that lets us know every time he and others like him speak…

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The West Hollywood City Council has unanimously approved a resolution seeking to remove President Donald Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The resolution urges the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Los Angeles to remove the star because of what it says is Trump’s “disturbing treatment of women and other actions.”
However, chamber president Leron Gubler tells the Los Angeles Times the chamber has never removed a star because it’s considered part of the walk’s “historic fabric.”
Monday’s vote came after a man accused of taking a pickax to the star last month was charged with a felony count of vandalism. The star was previously vandalized days before the November 2016 election….

Judge halts deportation of mother and daughter, threatens to hold Sessions in contempt…CBS
A federal judge Thursday and chastised Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Trump administration for attempting to remove a mother and daughter from the country in the midst of a court hearing appealing their deportation. As first reported by The Washington Post, D.C. Circuit Court Judge Emmet Sullivan threatened to hold sessions in contempt of court as he halted the deportation process.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit this week on behalf of twelve plaintiffs, challenging Sessions’ decision to refuse asylum based on claims of domestic and gang violence. Attorneys for the ACLU and the Justice Department reached an agreement to stay one plaintiff’s deportation until after the hearing.
During a recess, ACLU attorneys learned that the plaintiff, known in court papers as Carmen, and her daughter had been removed from a detention center and were potentially on their way to the San Antonio airport, where they would be placed on a flight leaving the United States.
Sullivan halted the deportation, and then reportedly called for the Justice Department to “turn the plane around.”
“This is pretty outrageous,” Sullivan said after learning about the removal, according to the Post. “That someone seeking justice in U.S. court is spirited away while her attorneys are arguing for justice for her?”…

For Now, Army Suspends Discharges of Immigrant Recruits
The Associated Press 9 Aug 2018 By Garance Burke and Martha Mendoza
The U.S. Army has stopped discharging immigrant recruits who enlisted seeking a path to citizenship — at least temporarily.
A memo shared with The Associated Press on Wednesday and dated July 20 spells out orders to high-ranking Army officials to stop processing discharges of men and women who enlisted in the special immigrant program, effective immediately.
It was not clear how many recruits were impacted by the action, and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the memo.
“Effective immediately, you will suspend processing of all involuntary separation actions,” read the memo signed by Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs Marshall Williams.
The disclosure comes one month after the AP reported that dozens of immigrant enlistees were being discharged or had their contracts cancelled. Some said they were given no reason for their discharge. Others said the Army informed them they’d been labeled as security risks because they have relatives abroad or because the Defense Department had not completed background checks on them…

Trump’s response to NFL players who protest:
“The NFL players are at it again—taking a knee when they should be standing proudly for the National Anthem. Numerous players, from different teams, wanted to show their ‘outrage’ at something that most of them are unable to define. They make a fortune doing what they love… Be happy, be cool! A football game, that fans are paying soooo much money to watch and enjoy, is no place to protest. Most of that money goes to the players anyway. Find another way to protest. Stand proudly for your National Anthem or be Suspended Without Pay!”

“I want to die’: Was a 5-year-old drugged after being separated from his dad at the border?
By Washington Post on Aug 9, 2018 at 10:26 a.m.
MOULTRIE, Ga. – The boy stood at the window with clenched fists, watching a heavy rain fall on the overgrown yard outside. Three months earlier, the 5-year-old and his father had fled death threats in Guatemala, seeking asylum in the United States. Instead, Border Patrol agents had sent his dad to an immigration jail and Adonias to a children’s shelter in Chicago.
Now, six days after their July 24 reunion, his father was sitting across the room from him in the shabby, shotgun house they shared with four relatives, asking Adonias what had happened in the 10 weeks they were apart.
He knew there were allegations that Adonias had been injected with something that made him sleepy when he misbehaved – accusations state and federal authorities are investigating but could be difficult to definitively resolve.
The shelter, which conducted its own investigation, adamantly denies any wrongdoing, and the boy’s medical records – provided by his attorney with his parents’ permission – show no injections of anything except vaccines. But an independent psychological evaluation before his release from Casa Guadalupe found he was “exhibiting signs of trauma, particularly when triggered by [a toy] syringe.”..

Demand debt relief for Puerto Rico

Almost a year after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, thousands of Americans there are still without power – and Wall Street vultures are exploiting their misery.
Wall Street bondholders recently forced Puerto Rico’s government to split sales tax revenue with creditors. Creditors and the federal fiscal control board have imposed such measures, along with austerity and the sale of public assets, to help Wall Street turn a profit on Puerto Rican debt that speculators bought for cents on the dollar.
But now, a host of leading Democrats – including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders – have unveiled a sweeping debt relief bill that needs our urgent support.
.The crisis in Puerto Rico is decades in the making and the result of a racist, colonial approach to the island. First, it was the exploitation of the sugarcane industry. Then, Congress turned Puerto Rico into a tax haven for manufacturing and pharmaceutical companies. When Congress allowed those tax breaks to expire, the Puerto Rican economy collapsed and its government had to take on additional debt. Washington then imposed an unelected, Wall Street-backed “fiscal control board” to institute harsh austerity measures in response to that debt.
Wall Street hedge funds bought Puerto Rico’s debt for cents on the dollar but are demanding the island’s government pay in full. They used their leverage to force Puerto Rico’s government to slash infrastructure and the social safety net in order to pay them billions in interest and fees. They even doubled down after Hurricane Maria devastated the island. Now Puerto Rico faces the impossible task of trying to rebuild while being forced to line creditors’ pockets.
The Obama administration’s PROMESA Act imposed undemocratic and unfair strictures on Puerto Rico. Following the lead of progressives like Sens. Warren and Sanders, Democrats have realized that Puerto Rico does not need more racist, colonial micromanaging. The U.S. Territorial Relief Act would wipe out the debt of storm-ravaged U.S. territories while protecting the few debt holders who aren’t Wall Street vulture funds.
Puerto Ricans are American citizens – but have been treated like colonial possessions to be exploited by large corporations and then told they cannot manage their own affairs. They had no voice in Congress when our government was boosting oil and gas companies, but now that climate change has supercharged storms and devastated the island, Trump even floated the idea that Puerto Rico not be rebuilt at all.
The rest of America has failed in our obligations to the people of Puerto Rico for far too long. Congress must invest in massive rebuilding and end Wall Street control over the island. Forgiving Puerto Rico’s Washington-created debt is a major step in the right direction.
