In 2013, Rahm Emanuel closed 50 public schools in one day. If for no other reason, he will go down in history as the mayor who shuttered 50 public schools on the same day. Never happened before.
What happened to those schools? Watch this short video.
Did he think that schools are like hot dog stands or shoe stores? If you don’t make a profit, you close it and move on? Did he forget that he was cutting the arteries away from communities, families, and children?
Tina Trujillo at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Colorado’s Michelle Renée suggest that government agencies and policy-makers, including the U.S. Department of Education, would be wise to look at educational research as they guide school turnarounds.
Evidence shows that top-down, punitive efforts are ineffective and counterproductive. Instead, a collaborative, community-driven approach—combined with significant, sustained financial investment and a focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning—has been proven to be the better path to school improvement.

“Did he forget that he was cutting the arteries away from communities, families, and children?”
Sigh. Emanuel and his ilk forget nothing. Please let’s always keep front and center in our minds that none of this is about ignorance or lack of understanding or good intentions or any such thing. Cutting the arteries away from communities, families and children was exactly what Emanuel intended.

You’re right.
He supports the Shock Doctrine which involves exploiting a crisis (either natural or man made) to carry out one’s agenda.
“You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” Rahm Emanuel
And why wait around for a crisis when you can create one?

You’re right. That is exactly what Emanuel intended. He closed the schools to get the minority community out of the area that is slated for redevelopment. We can expect bad behavior from conservatives, but the corporate Democrats are cut from the same cloth. The both opt to make money on the “backs of school children.” The best thing this grandmother can do is to organize her neighbors to vote out the privateers. They only have a voice if they vote.

What can be done to help this situation? I’ve worked with children since I was a kid myself. With 42 years in Scouting (Boys and Girls), many years of speaking at school assemblies and 12 years of doing after-school programs, plus religious education programs for children. . . my heart goes out to all the students affected by this. At 69, I recently closed my business and after returning books to all 97 authors I represented, I will be making digital copies of my own 20+ books (with more to be written) with children’s activities that build confidence, and giving them away for free. I know that I have changed the lives of many of the children with whom I’ve worked. Thank YOU for ALL YOU DO!
