A chemistry teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida was arrested for accidentally leaving a loaded handgun in a public bathroom stall. A homeless man found the weapon and fired it. No one was injured.
Shortly after the February 14 massacre at the school, he said on national TV that he was open to the idea of arming teachers.

One seldom has an opportunity to see real genius at work….

Ah, the teacher. Sorry. Not clear from the post without reading the article.

This story confirms why guns have no place in the every day interactions in schools. People are fallible. We had locked teacher bathrooms in my school, and each teacher was issued a key. Over the years I turned in keys found in bathrooms to the office many times. We’re human; we forget. We cannot afford to forget guns!

Amen, rt. “People are fallible.” I once worked in an “open” school (no classroom doors or, in some cases, no permanent, separating walls–just accordion walls–7 i think the school–& many others of that kind–have remained so). A young teacher had collected money from her homeroom for a field trip–at least $100 or more–& put that money–in front of the 6th Grade students (majority low-income)–in an unlocked desk drawer. Of course, you all know what happened next. Kids staying after school snuck back while teacher was standing & talking to another teacher (who was supposed to be supervising them for an after school homework session); they took all the money. The next day, the principal called the entire 6th Grade into the auditorium: everyone would be punished unless the perps confessed. They were all sp.ed. students: one was one of the younger 6th graders, & he cried like a baby; the leader, an older (failed a grade or 2), much bandied around foster child was a self-professed “thief,” & the 3rd was an extremely bright L.D. student on the high end of the autism spectrum & had no reaction. The school administration made a bad example out of them; the youth police officer assigned to the school hauled them down to the police station, showing them what jail looks like & scaring the s**t out of the little one (for no good reason, really).
The school secretary calmly stated, “Why didn’t Mrs.X take the money & bring it to me to lock up in the office vault?” Indeed!
Imagine if that had been a gun in Mrs. X’s drawer.
And, sorry to say, she’s not the only teacher I’d worked with–or teachers I know now– who would’ve done something like that.

You don’t understand! He’s a chemistry teacher! No one likes them! They should be the exception to the no carry rule in school. Poor bastards.

What does this teacher do with his gun while he’s teaching? Does he leave at home or in his car? He’s not allowed to take it in the school. We know what this man does with his gun while he’s on the toilet; I guess he was so deep in thought that he forgot all about his weapon. A good forgetful guy with a gun is the answer to a bad forgetful guy with a gun.

A man accidently left a loaded gun in a bathroom. Another person found it and shot it off. No one was injured. The gun owner was arrested. Therefore, people should not carry guns. Breaking news…at eleven.

A teacher in another state left a loaded gun in a bathroom, and a student found it. In another state, a teacher shot herself in the foot. Do you really want guns in schools, carried by teachers?

It’s breaking news for us because we are in the business of prevention, and we want to avoid breaking news that involves deaths.

This is the first posting on this blog…
Which leaves me at almost a complete loss for words.
I guess Emma Gonzalez was right when she talked about similar possibilities if teachers have guns…

Teachers with guns. This definitely ranks among the most insane proposals ever in the history of politics. These people are certifiable.
