Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin mocked striking teachers by saying they were just like “teenagers who want a better car. “
This video shows teachers rattling their car keys at the Governor and chanting “Where’s my car?”
If you read the thread, you will see that the teacher who took the video, Dawn Brockman, has been besieged by media outlets asking for her permission to air it.

Dear Oklahoma Legislator:
I, along with 100 female attorneys, will be coming to see you Monday. I am asking to meet with you and discuss a resolution to this educational funding nightmare. I feel like we can help you, collectively, come up with a resolution. But let’s be clear. There WILL be change. And it WILL be for the better for our children. As Nelson Mandela once said “there can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” Call my office to schedule a meeting with one of us. My number is 918-895-8200. I’ll await your call. Let me be clear about one thing, we need change. And you will do it, or you have my word…. one of the 100 women by my side will file for your seat…. and we will do it for you. I prefer to work with you. It’s your choice if you will work with me.
Sincerely –
Becki A. Murphy
P.S. I’ll see you Monday. We will be the women in black. You will see us coming.

Wonderful. Most of the Oklahoma legislators have no opposition. Run, run, run.

Kudos to these Oklahoma teachers for their courage and cohesion in the face of GOP duplicity and crude swift boating.

The car comment by the governor really shows how out of touch with reality she is. I guess as long as her benefactors’ pockets are flush (and of course hers) then everything must be hunky dory, right?

In defending our excellent principal (who was in danger of being fired by an insecure superintendent feeling threatened by an extremely competent, tall, African-American woman possessing the doctorate that he did not have, & thought that she was after his job) for our school staff, he used that line on me (& it’s old), “Rbmtk, you all want a Cadillac when you can really do quite well w/a Chevrolet.”
I answered, “Mr. Super, you’re really talking to the wrong person–I love my used Datsun B-210, & I wouldn’t have a Caddy if you bought me one, so–very bad analogy.”
He had invited me up for “a coffee” to “discuss” the principal, as I was the Building Rep. for our NEA-affiliated local.
Suffice it to say, after my reply, he looked at his watch & ended the “coffee.”
The teachers & the parents backed the principal 100%, & it was the superintendent who would up leaving (&, no, our principal did not apply for his job).

Rbmtk, that was wonderful to read! Every victory counts, even at the local school and school district level!

Remember it’s a joke…satire. Trump likes stupid voters and so does the rest of the GOP.

From newyorker.com: Scott Walker Dismayed That Wisconsin Apparently Smarter Despite Cuts in Education
The governor said that his cuts were based on a theory known as “trickle-up stupidity,” in which students’ ignorance would eventually infect their voting-age parents.

It makes me almost cry to see that teachers have to work so hard to get legislators and governors to realize that they are important. I have a hard time understanding why cheating teachers out of a decent middle class living is considered just fine. The public and students want good teachers. Good teachers do not work for free, at least they shouldn’t have to. This is all SO sad.

Agreed, carol. But–some heartening news–went to see our retiring Cook County Clerk Orr speak yesterday (jurisdiction Chicago, in the glorious state of ILL-Annoy), & he spread the good word that record #s of new & young people were filing for office (although many of them having their petitions thrown out for “bad” signatures & other nefarious reasons {there’s good reason that many call us “Crook” County!}) ! & just received an e-mail today (from Progressive Change, I believe) about 3 teachers running for office.
AND– #1–most of the people thrown off the ballot in our 3/20 primaries ARE fighting back in numerous ways, so no one is giving up, here; #2–a good # of reformers (2 of whom are/have been teachers!) won some BIG races here, despite all the $$$ & arm-twisting & other shenanigans.
Yes, WE can, yes WE did & yes–oh, yes–WE WILL!!!

retiredbutmissthekids: Good news!! Teachers in political positions in C(r)ook county would definitely make a difference. Hope the Teachers’ Retirement System of Illinois and other pensions start getting funded.
I lived in the southern suburbs of Chicago for over 30 years. Now I live in NW Indiana [cheaper] and am an hour from downtown Chicago. We get TV channels that come from Illinois. There is one PBS channel that originates from my area.
