Don’t be fooled. Another phony organization has set up shop in New York to cut taxes, attack unions, and reduce government services.
It is called Reclaim New York.
It wants to eliminate waste and corruption. So do we all.
The founder, chair, director, and treasurer is Rebekah Mercer, who has been the financial backer of Breitbart and Steve Bannon (she is said to have cut off Bannon after the expose “Fire and Fury” was published, which quotes Bannon extensively about Trump’s flaws). Her father is billionaire Robert Mercer, who bankrolls the alt-right.
Reclaim New York incorporated in 2013 as a tax-exempt nonprofit. Steve Bannon, the former head of Breitbart News and a mastermind behind Trump’s nationalist campaign, was a founding director. Laurence Levy, a longtime associate of former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, filed the paperwork.
The stated mission was to be non-partisan. Tax filings show that the Mercer Family Foundation provided about $1.3 million of Reclaim’s $2 million in revenue during its first three years, including the group’s entire $1.25 million in revenue in 2015, the most recent year for which filings are publicly available.
Muir refused to say what Reclaim’s budget is now or who else is funding operations.
In 2016, a related organization called Reclaim New York Initiative incorporated as what’s technically called a “social welfare organization.” Such organizations have earned the moniker “dark money” groups because they can typically shield the names of donors from the public. New York State rules, however, do require some disclosure.
It’s through this entity that Reclaim does its lobbying.
Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway was a founding director of Reclaim New York Initiative. Disclosure forms filed with New York state show Robert Mercer provided $70,855 in March last year to launch the lobbying unit.
One of Reclaim’s most visible projects is building a giant, searchable database of government spending. The group says it has filed 2,500 public records requests with government agencies across the state, including tiny villages and school districts, asking for their “checkbooks” — records of all expenditures in a given year.
Reclaim sued 11 local agencies for either denying the requests or not complying quickly enough. When it won, Reclaim fought for lawyers’ fees. One Rockland County village implored the judge to impose what it called “The Mercer Mercy Rule” and not require the cash-strapped village to pay the legal bills for the billionaire’s nonprofit. The judge agreed.
The group also holds workshops across the state in hotel conference rooms, restaurants and other local gathering spots. The events feature a presentation on New York’s “affordability crisis” and training on how to use public-records laws to keep an eye on local officials.
Watch out for Reclaim New York. It wants to destroy our state and local governments.

Teachers are not greedy; those that have much more than the rest of us are. I am very suspicious of groups that claim our country has lost something. “Make America Great” and “Reclaim New York” are perfect examples. If New Yorkers are smart, they will ignore this bogus group that smells of nationalism and elitism.
Nobody should try to turn New York into the regressive South where salaries and rights are low, and the people have less disposable income. As a result, the economy hobbles along rather than soars. Florida is anomaly in this pattern. Despite chronic stupidity and regressive policies, the state keeps moving forward blindly because the economy is buoyed by Northern dollars from retirees and tourism. That is how Florida can afford to pay for its chronic stupidity.

Yes, these filthy rich libertarians want to turn the 99% into subservient and compliant peons. The right wing/libertarian goal: no unions, totally privatized schools, teachers as easily replaceable at-will employees with low pay, no benefits, no pensions, no tenure, no rights and no voice in the educational process.

On the reverse end of politics, some Democrats including someone that worked for Bill Clinton have formed the MADDOG PAC. They are putting up billboards in conservative areas. Pensacola is one of their targets. Their first billboard was Matt Gaetz’s mugshot with the caption,” Matt Gaetz, how many DUIs have you had?” They chose to place their ad on Navy Blvd. which leads to NAS Pensacola, a spot with high traffic and visibility. Their second billboard calls the NRA a terrorist organization. https://www.pnj.com/story/news/local/2018/03/02/new-billboard-pensacola-calls-nra-terrorist-organization/388951002/

Reclaim America is ANOTHER SPIN term.

If they really wanted to eliminate waste and corruption, they’d literally get rid of Trump.

These are the same people who got that guy in office on Pennsylvania Ave. and backed and supported Steve Bannon. They claim to be interested in government transparency?!?! I think not.
How dare they wield their toxic ideas in my home state!!!
Their interest is in disabling and dismantling government in the name of “reform” but it’s really a ruse for further empowering an old fashioned ruling class with the rest of us as the peons who clean their spittoons.
This is so far beyond outrageous. If you consider yourself a true patriot, an American citizen who thinks this country is worth preserving – Republican, Democrat, Independent or Other, then fight like all get out to expose this group for who they and their backers are and what their endgame really is.
And if, perchance, their plan is truly different than what their financial backers have aimed for in the past, then they need to prove it in a big way, beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Right now they’re just running small town governments ragged with random FOIA requests without a transparent, clear purpose.
I want government reform too. I want to pay less taxes. But don’t co-opt my concerns so that you can create an organization that claims to work in my interest, when the real goal is to dismantle and/or control those of us who aren’t millionaires/billionaires.
OY
When and where is this going to end?
Maybe 242 years is as long as we can expect this experiment in government to work…

WHITE SUPREMACIST TIES: The WNYC profile on Reclaim NY (for the Rich) was pretty comprehensive, but notably left out a very controversial part of the Mercers’ track record.
Last October, Joseph Bernstein of BuzzFeed published an explosive cache of leaked emails that showed the Mercers were funding Breitbart News, Steve Bannon and Milo Yiannopoulos while they were collaborating on “alt-right” articles with known white supremacists. From the Buzzfeed article:
“Finally doing my big feature on the alt right,” Yiannopoulos wrote in a March 9, 2016, email to Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer, a hacker who is the system administrator of the neo-Nazi hub the Daily Stormer, and who would later ask his followers to disrupt the funeral of Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer. “Fancy braindumping some thoughts for me.”
“It’s time for me to do my big definitive guide to the alt right,” Yiannopoulos wrote four hours later to Curtis Yarvin, a software engineer who under the nom de plume Mencius Moldbug helped create the “neoreactionary” movement, which holds that Enlightenment democracy has failed and that a return to feudalism and authoritarian rule is in order. “Which is my whorish way of asking if you have anything you’d like to make sure I include.”
“Alt r feature, figured you’d have some thoughts,” Yiannopoulos wrote the same day to Devin Saucier, who helps edit the online white nationalist magazine American Renaissance under the pseudonym Henry Wolff, and who wrote a story in June 2017 called “Why I Am (Among Other Things) a White Nationalist.”
About two weeks after the leaks were published, Robert Mercer released a statement saying he had sold his interest in Breitbart — to his daughter — and was in the process of untangling relations from Yiannopoulous. WNYC totally shied away from the Buzzfeed story, but otherwise builds an incredible profile of their operations.
New Yorkers should be aware of what’s going on with Reclaim NY – they are claiming Mercer is not involved day-to-day and they are pretending to be reaching out to real people on real issues, but make no mistake, this is billionaire-funded astroturf. It’s only the preliminary stage of a huge takeover of the government just like we saw in Wisconsin.
One they have a ReclaimNY precinct captain in every neighborhood, they will begin grooming them for higher office and planting them in various agencies, with Trump as a powerful ally in the White House.

True Diane! Despite several “dark money” scandals and being on the wrong side of the charter school question, Baker
somehow continues to be very popular. We need to elect a progressive Independent or Democratic governor.
