There have been many studies of the effects of introducing more guns into schools. It doesn’t make them safer.
Here’s what the science says about bringing more guns into schools: it doesn’t work

Thank you, Diane. Good article.
It’s insane to think more guns is the solution for gun violence. Everyone knows this is about $$$$$ and political favoritism.
Drumph is a sick person and treasonous. Drumph is: “MAKING America GRATE, not great.”

Please note the Joyce Foundation’s support for gun and violence research, they do good work! And given the lack of federal support they fill a serious gap.

It looks like some administrators are ignoring fears students have about being killed. It is neglect on the part of administrators to suspend kids or deny them the right to ride buses home if they protest. Looks like some serious problems are developing in this school.

Riverview Gardens students walk out, adding their voices to call for stricter gun laws
By Kristen Taketa St. Louis Post-Dispatch Feb 27, 2018
More than 200 Riverview Gardens High School students walked out Tuesday morning to protest gun violence and call for stricter gun control, but they fear they will be punished by the district for doing so.
Students left the high school around 10 a.m. and walked to the intersection of Shepley Drive and Bellefontaine Road, bearing signs with messages including, “Is your semi-automatic worth my life?” and “Teachers don’t need guns!”
Student leaders of the protest said they want background checks for all gun sales, a ban on bump stocks, and other gun control measures…
Riverview Gardens officials told students that they would not be allowed to come back onto campus to complete the rest of the school day after walking out. Officials also said they would not be allowed to ride school buses home.
Some students tried to return to school but were blocked from entering the campus by school officials.
Many students also said that, as they were walking out, they were told by school officials that they would be suspended…

A very large barf bag. Talk about a gun cult; some of the “congregants” wore crowns made from bullets. I’m hoping that those were not live rounds in the crowns. They claimed that the guns were not loaded, as if we could trust wackos who worship guns, literally. As an added bonus, they are Trump supporters.

I’d like to know what district has this type of money to spend on guns and security guards, and considers it a negligible cost. The more a place resembles a prison the more I want nothing to do with it. I would not want to work in a district where 40 teachers, principals, custodians or secretaries have access to guns.

Trump Wants to Arm Teachers. These Schools Already Do…NYT.
Hundreds of school districts across the country have given staff access to guns, seeing the weaponry not as a political statement but a practical response to a potent threat.
In Ohio, which allows local school boards to decide who can possess or have access to firearms on school grounds, Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, also supports arming teachers.
Ohio’s teachers’ unions have mobilized against the widespread arming of teachers in schools, arguing that gun control, not armed clashes, will protect students…
Like many districts, Sidney City Schools was shaken by the slaughter of 20 first graders and six staff members at Sandy Hook in 2012. ..
The district spent about $70,000 on safes, bulletproof vests, cameras, guns, radios and ammunition. Uniformed, armed officers cost $200,000 a year, and an insurance policy of $100,000 a year includes coverage for its staff with access to firearms. Those are negligible costs for a school district with a $36 million budget, the superintendent said.
Windows and doors are numbered in the district’s schools, and visitors have to be buzzed in. Each school has a panic button and security camera system that feeds to the sheriff’s office. Every school has a uniformed, armed guard, mostly retired sheriff’s deputies, every day from bell to bell. The high school has a specially trained officer and a bulletproof window between the secretary and visitors.
And if all else fails, there’s a secret group of 40 educators — teachers, principals, custodians, secretaries — called a “first responder team” that can retrieve firearms in under a minute…

I was a Superintendent for 29 years, 15 of which were in districts with budgets that exceeded $100,000,000 and 7 of which were in one of the most affluent districts in New England… and I can assure you that $300,000 per year in “new money” was not seen as negligible by any board I ever worked for. But evidently fear is a powerful motivator… How else can one explain the trillions we’ve spent on the endless wars in the Middle East?

Which sign will stop a potential shooter?
“This school is a gun-free zone”
or
“This school is protected by armed guards with deadly weapons. All potential threats will be met with deadly force. The guards shoot to kill”

Charles, do you think Nikolas Cruz or the student-killers at Columbine (who came prepared to die) would have been deterred by your sign? The teachers and students would be terrified, not the killers.

Charles: Armed guards with deadly weapons means more bullets flying around. Statistics prove that more guns equals more killings. Stop with the thoughts that arming everyone would mean safety for all. It means more killings and these will continue until Congress and our idiot president realize that and finally do something to limit the amount of guns in our society. [Hint: Most of the GOP has been bought off by the NRA. Why do they spend so much on lobbying if it isn’t necessary? Trump was bought for $30 million. My Senator Todd Young [R-IN] was paid $2,896,732. That was money well spent if you consider bribery a good investment.]
I would never want to work in a school with armed anyone walking around. More guns equals more killings.

Here is the demoralizing story of gun-violence research funding by the feds
After the Newtown massacre of schoolchildren in 2012, President Obama issued an executive order instructing the CDC to “conduct or sponsor research into the causes of gun violence and the ways to prevent it.” But the agency has refused unless it receives a specific appropriation to cover the research. Congress played its obligatory role in acting as the NRA’s cat’s-paw by repeatedly rejecting bills to provide $10 million for the work.

3/3/2018 How many children need to get shot before corrupt Senator Todd Young reacts? $2,896,732 buys NRA loyalty but brings fear to our schools
Parents are now asking, “How many children need to get shot before there is any action in Congress?”
Since the mass shooting last month that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla, schools around the country have faced scenes of gun violence threats, tips, lockdowns and false alarms dozens of times each day.
Because of Congress’s inaction to have a mandatory buyback program and enact strict gun laws, which Australia did to end gun violence, schools are now experiencing this terrorizing reality.
The Educator’s School Safety Network says an average of 70 incidents have occurred daily in the weeks since the Florida shooting, as compared to a more typical pace, of about 10 to 12 incidents a day. Hard to measure is how many of these incidents represent an increase in false alarms, due in part to heightened vigilance, and how many reflect a new surge in truly dangerous threats.
School administrators now face a daily dilemma: Take every possible threat seriously and risk a needless disruption to the school day, a noisy police response and a crush of worried parents. Or, ignore what could be a real threat and risk the nightmare of your school becoming the next Parkland.
Each threat of violence has sent schools into lockdowns, again and again.
How are our children supposed to learn when they are living in a constant environment of fear? Students have been killed and still Congress does nothing. Corrupt politicians allow themselves to be dominated by the NRA which promotes fear so that people buy guns and $$$ accrues to gun manufacturers.
WHAT ARE YOU, CORRUPT SENATOR TODD YOUNG, DOING ABOUT THIS? HAS THE NRA BRIBE OF $2,896,732 MADE YOU HAPPY?
You, corrupt Senator Todd Young, are personally responsible. You sit in comfort in your office and do nothing.

…At a conservative conference last week, LaPierre blamed the media and Washington insiders for exploiting “tragedy for political gain.”

According to OpenSecrets.org, the NRA spent $5.1 million in 2017 on lobbying politicians, up from about $1.5 million in the early ’00s. Total NRA expenditures reportedly hit $419 million in 2016, up from $312 million the prior year—including $30 million in support of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. …
In 1999, Fortune named the NRA as the most powerful lobbying organization in Washington, D.C., as voted by lawmakers and political staffers. It was a title the group then held for three years in a row….
There were reportedly 5.6 million firearms produced in the U.S. by American gun companies in 1980, and production rose to 11 million by 2013…
