I signed on to FEDEX soon after the company came into existence in 1971. Maybe in 1975, about then.
FEDEX is one of the few corporate partners of the National Rifle Association that refuses to withdraw its sponsorship. It gives NRA members discounts.
I called FEDEX to complain and found I was talking to someone at a call center in Mexico who had no idea what I was talking about. After repeat phone calls, I got connected to a nice young man in Virginia who told me about FEDEX support for good causes (“FEDEX Cares”). I told him the NRA is not a good cause. They promote legislation that allows mass murderers to get weapons of death. I said, I give you a week.
Today, after the Florida Senate House Appropriations Committee refused to ban assault weapons and decided to arm teachers (who don’t want guns in schools), I decided I had had enough.
I called FEDEX and after many diversions from one machine to another, I finally got a phone number for the department where you can cancel your account.
The number is 1-800-622-1147. You have to go through a few “press 1, press 2, press 3” things, but eventually you can ask for a “representative.”
I canceled my account. The representative didn’t say, “sorry to lose your business” or anything else. She just said, “It is canceled. Goodbye.”
A small act, but if 1,000,000 other customers did the same, FEDEX might actually “CARE.”
Also, one of the Republican candidates for governor of Georgia is threatening to cancel a tax break for Delta Airlines, which did withdraw its alliance with the NRA. Delta, says the New York Times today, brings billions of dollars of revenue to Georgia, because Atlanta is its hub.
Delta, consider moving to Nashville or some other city that would be glad to have the revenue you bring in. If the legislature of Georgia is dumb enough to punish you for standing up to the NRA, move out!

You are amazing! I love it! 😃

I just went out today and made a purchase at Dick’s Sporting Goods and told the cashier why I was in the store today. She thanked me, and told me she was recording all comments on cards to be sent to corporate headquarters. This was a store in East Hanover, NJ. I wonder if all stores are following through.

Thanks for taking that stand. Also check out the latest statements on the Dick’s Sporting Goods Twitter account. They will still sell a lot of guns, but they’re taking real steps to reduce the odds of another mass shooting. This morning the CEO said he was inspired by the work of the Douglas students.

I posted this on one of your other blogs. Thought it was relevant. Sort of the same idea but with a twist.
I just sent a protest letter to the CEO and VP of FedEx. [At least I hope so. This was information that I got on DuckDuckGo.] I’m asking that you all send similar letters.
……….
Dear Vice President Betty Hale:
I am a frequent user of FedEx but I’m rethinking my position now that I’ve read that you still have a business alliance with the National Rifle Association.
The NRA works to create fear in the population and has spent billions to corrupt our Congress. My Senator Todd Young, (R-IN) was paid $2,896,732 by the NRA to ensure that he would not support any common sense gun controls. Our President Trump was paid $30 million to ensure his loyalty.
I am tired of the killings that are needlessly causing so much hurt and suffering. The NRA is responsible for these killings since it wants to have every citizen armed. Statistics show that more guns does not make us safer. More guns equals more killings.
FedEx can join a growing list of corporations that will not have their name connected with the NRA. I am waiting to hear an announcement in the media that you have joined that respected list who care about the human lives that are needlessly lost.
Please stop your company’s immoral business alliance with the National Rifle Association. Join other corporations in putting the NRA on notice that it’s time for a change.
Sincerely,
Carol______

Good for you, Diane! Yesterday, NY City invited Delta to move its hub here, away from GA. In the current political system we are stuck with, our dollars mean more than our requests, demands, phone calls, petitions, or even, sometimes, our votes.

Like many others I am being inundated with cries of help from groups who are trying to stop the idiocy of many Republican policies, some of these made worse by Trump.
The feeling is not unlike that of sitting in the emergency room seeing that urgent action is needed and there are not enough people to help. The students who are leading the charge against the NRA and its supporters need all the help they can get, and right now that is a top priority.
Our nation is in deep trouble. Conscientious citizens who are willing and able to act are too few. I cannot believe that some church invited members to bring in their AR-15s for a blessing. The prayerful paranoids are really dangerous, and the NRA is defending their right to have assault weapons.

No more FedEx for us as well!
I am in Texas for my grandson’s birthday and have been watching the local news. It is early voting for the primaries. Dan Patrick’s ads are everywhere. We hear how great he is because he will help build the WALL. I have been here less than a week, and I can practically recite the ad. I have no idea about any Democrats that are running as they obviously do not have any money, or perhaps they are saving it for November. With all the the gerrymandering and all the wealthy donors supporting conservatives, it is hard for Democrats to compete. It order to make an impression on voters, Democrats are going to need a lot of door to door campaigning, if they can’t afford advertising.

I don’t use FedEx, I use the USPS, it’s a union shop. I think UPS is still union? For years, FedEx classified its “employees” as independent contractors so that it did not have to pay into Social Security, Medicare, any benefits, paid sick leave, nada, nothing, etc. I have no idea what the status of the independent contractor/employees is today FedEx.

UPS is the single largest employer in the Teamsters Union.
USPS employees are represented by the American Postal Workers Union.
I never use FedEx. I only ever use USPS (my first choice) or UPS.

Thank you.
For workers, Fed Ex is/has always been an evil company, one of the first and largest employers to begin the plague of denying benefits to workers by claiming they are “independent contractors.”
UPS and the USPS are both unionized entities, and should always be used instead.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
I have NEVER used FedEx. I use the USPS. The last time I was at the post office, I thanked two postal workers. They were shocked to get a “Thank you.” I told these two USPS employees, “I support our US Postal System.”
I have used UPS for some mailings.

I have refused to shop at WalMart for the past 14 years. Finding out how they feel about public education stopped me flat. I will pay more elsewhere, but can afford to EAT LESS. Same for Starbucks.

Walmart, on the other hand, pulled assault rifles in 2015, they pulled some more now (like handguns, I think) and they raised the age limit to by guns and ammo to 21.

And how abusive they are to the taxpayers who fund the government programs that many of their employees use to be able to survive on the meager pay they receive.

Because it is so easy to move an airline hub.

If the state of Georgia takes away a $50 million tax break to punish Delta, which adds billions to the state’s economy, I assure you that other cities will offer even bigger incentives to woo Delta away from Atlanta. Nashville? Birmingham? Louisville?

…“pursue school safety programs” is a trough of hog wash. It’s code for arm everyone in the school, including students, janitors, aides, librarians, nurses and lunch room ladies. Any parent who wants to enter has to show his assault rifle. They’ll all be happy to carry a firearm as long as they get the generous one time bonus of $500.

NRA directly appealed to Trump against raising age for firearms purchases
Washington (CNN)National Rifle Association leaders appealed directly to President Donald Trump about not raising the age limit for buying certain firearms, a senior administration official tells CNN.
The appeal came when Trump had lunch with the leaders on Sunday. The official said the NRA would prefer that the White House pursue school safety programs.

The NRA would be happy to lower the minimum age for purchasing guns of any kind. 15? 12? If you’re old enough to lift it, you’re old enough to buy it. Goal: sell more guns.

Good and necessary move, though my city and my students may be affected by this boycott. Even the Waltons did something unexpected: they raised the gun-purchase age limit to 21 and made restrictions on the type of guns and ammunition they sell (they already pulled assault rifles in 2015).

My guess is that the management at Walmart looked at the percent of gun buyers who were under 21 and figured out that they would not lose hardly any business by raising the age. All they would have to do is add a little cost, let’s say $3 to all weapons purchases and they can make up the lost revenue from not selling to anyone under 21.
Hey, and, voila, it’s a public relations coup!

Good decision, Diane!
That’s because, in a addition to their affiliation with NRA which they won’t break, FedEx:
1.) Hires delivery drivers as independent contractors so that they don’t have to submit the employer’s share of payroll taxes (which means their drivers have to pay BOTH the required employee and the employer contributions), as well as to skirt having to provide employee benefits and to circumvent being required to comply with labor laws
2.) Outsources customer service to low paid workers in foreign countries who can barely speak English
All of these practices are red flags and a nightmare for both workers and customers.

It’s sad that they treated you that way on the phone. Even worse that it was so hard to even find a number to cancel your membership. It’s interesting how we live in a world of ‘fake news’ while FEDEX is claiming they care. However, everyone has a right to their own beliefs. I’m happy you stood up for yours and disconnected yourself from a company that doesn’t share in your views, without being nasty about it. So many people take it too far anymore.
