Vox decided to fact-check Trump’s claim that 10-20% of America’s teachers are “very gun adept.”
I responded that he just “made it up.”
Vox did some digging and found that a program called Troops to Teachers, established by the first Bush administration in 1993 attracted 20,000 veterans into the classroom. That’s about one-half of one percent of the nation’s 3.5 Million teachers. TFA placed 320 veterans in schools. That’s not even a statistical blip.
Rachel Wolfe of VOX looked for other possible sources of teachers who are “very adept” with firearms.
As I said, Trump was just making it up.
I wonder if he has ever met an actual school teacher other than perfunctory school visits.
Where did he get that number?

Trump likes to make up his own version of facts. His own facts prove whatever he is thinking at the time. It’s part of his ‘charm’. He is a liar with little connection to reality. Facts don’t matter to him or his loyal followers.

Just guessing, but perhaps it came from the percentage of the general population that could be considered “gun adept” ??? I have no idea what that number is,

When I was a kid, I went to an over-night camp for five years where we had individualized daily schedules based on the different activities we liked and signed up for and one of my activities was riflery. I learned how to shoot a .22 –which are very small bullets.
So I know how to shoot, but I didn’t become a marksman and I haven’t picked up a gun since then, so I would not say that I’m highly adept. How many campers from places like that became teachers? Do the scouts teach marksmanship? Where else would urban people have learned to shoot?
I think Trump made it up, too.

While serving in Viet Nam, I became adept with the Browning Automatic Rifle. Since then I have only shot a gun once at some tin cans on fence posts. That is once in a span of 45 years. I would need some refresher training before I was considered adept and most of the guys on my ship were not on the repel boarders team and only fired a gun a few times during basic training. The point is that the majority of ex-military now teaching are not actually adept with firearms either. Some familiarity with firearms but not currently adept.

Assuming Trump, did not just make the stat up, where could he have gotten it? Perhaps from the number of people in general who own guns? Perhaps by dividing the number of guns by the square root of the number of guns divided by the number of teachers?
In any case, I suspect that no one knows how many teachers are even vaguely familiar with guns. You can bet a very few are SWAT-trained. I used to train to be a volunteer fireman. It required constant attention, and it demanded at least 10 hours per week besides fighting fires. That training pales by comparison to being trained to do something that one would, in greatest probability, never use. It would mean hours per week, all year, year after year. It would last until teachers were recorded on camera making the wrong decision.
More important is the effect this would have on the budget of the school. This is expensive. Arming teachers and training them would cost billions per year. It would be the largest unfunded mandate in the history of education, surpassing even the required testing mandates that have sopped up school funds in the past decade.

President Trump condemned officers outside the Florida school shooting who didn’t stop it, saying he’d run in “even if I didn’t have a weapon”
Monday, February 26, 2018 1:42 PM EST
“You don’t know until you test it, but I think, I really believe I would have run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon,” the president said.
Speaking on Monday, Mr. Trump also said that the country needs to take a look at whether more mental health institutions need to be opened to treat people with mental illness and avert mass shootings.

“The Time Donald Trump Turned Away in Disgust While a Man Was Bleeding to Death in Front of Him.”
Did Trump lie when he told Howard Stern this story?
“This is who Trump is,” said Stern of the 45th president. “He was always bombastic. He always rated women. He always talked in a misogynistic, sexist kind of way, but he did it sort of proudly and out in the open.” …
“Trump, a notorious germaphobe, is discussing his extreme distaste for blood. The mere sight of it, he says, causes him to recoil in disgust.” …
“So what happens is, this guy falls off right on his face, hits his head, and I thought he died. And you know what I did? I said, ‘Oh my God, that’s disgusting,’ and I turned away,” said Trump.

It’s possible that what really happened was that he telegraphed a punch, that the number was one dreamed up by an NRA or other such stink tank or private military contractor as a future goal for how many school staff they think need to be armed. Don’t forget, he needed that cheat sheet on empathetic and other basic responses when he met with the Florida students and others. Every Member of Congress Who Took Money From the NRA and Tweeted ‘Thoughts and Prayers’ to Las Vegas
Rafi Schwartz
10/02/17 3:15pm
Americans woke up on Monday morning to learn of yet another horrific act of gun violence in the United States—this time a mass shooting in Las Vegas that left at least 58 people dead and more than 500 injured. But it seems unlikely that the politicians in a position to actually change our gun laws will actually do something about it, because they never do.
So, in lieu of any substantive gun control, what do America’s senators and congresspeople have to offer? That tried and true chestnut of noncommittal national mourning: “Thoughts and prayers.” And just as in the past, those thoughts and prayers seem to have been paid for in part by the National Rifle Association, whose campaign donations and scare-mongering have effectively blocked any life-saving legislation which might prevent a person from getting their hands on a fully automatic machine gun they can then use to pump bullets into dozens of innocent people.
So who is sending their NRA-sponsored well wishes to the victims of the Las Vegas massacre today? Let’s take a look, with a little help from the campaign contribution database at opensecrets.org.
