Donald Trump, who dodged the draft in Vietnam with five deferments, ordered the military to plan a grand military parade like the one he saw in France. Trump loves the military, but avoided military service with four student deferments and a doctor’s letter claiming a bone spur in his foot. The bone spur has not interfered with his golf game in the years since he successful avoided wearing his country’s uniform.
“President Trump’s vision of soldiers marching and tanks rolling down the boulevards of Washington is moving closer to reality in the Pentagon and White House, where officials say they have begun to plan a grand military parade later this year showcasing the might of America’s armed forces. Trump has long mused publicly and privately about wanting such a parade, but a Jan. 18 meeting between Trump and top generals in the Pentagon’s tank — a room reserved for top-secret discussions — marked a tipping point, according to two officials briefed on the planning. Surrounded by the military’s highest-ranking officials, including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., Trump’s seemingly abstract desire for a parade was suddenly heard as a presidential directive, the officials said.
“The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France,” said a military official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the planning discussions are supposed to remain confidential. “This is being worked at the highest levels of the military.” Shows of military strength are not typical in the United States — and they don’t come cheap. The cost of shipping Abrams tanks and high-tech hardware to Washington could run in the millions, and military officials said it was unclear how they would pay for it…
“The inspiration for Trump’s push is last year’s Bastille Day celebration in Paris, which the president attended as a guest of French President Emmanuel Macron. Trump was awestruck by the tableau of uniformed French troops marching down Avenue des Champs-Elysees with military tanks, armored vehicles, gun trucks and carriers — complete with fighter jets flying over the Arc de Triomphe and painting the sky with streaks of blue, white and red smoke for the colors of the French flag.
” Aboard Air Force One en route home from Paris in July, aides said Trump told them that he was dazzled by the French display and that he wanted one at home. It was still on his mind two months later when he met with Macron on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. “It was one of the greatest parades I’ve ever seen,” Trump told reporters. “It was two hours on the button, and it was military might, and I think a tremendous thing for France and for the spirit of France.
” Seated next to Macron, Trump added: “We’re going to have to try to top it.” Several administration officials said the parade planning began in recent weeks and involves White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, but they cautioned that it is in the preliminary stages. D.C. officials said they had not been notified of parade plans.
” A date has not been selected, although officials said Trump would like to tie the parade to a patriotic holiday. Officials are weighing weather patterns as well as competing events, such as the massive annual Independence Day celebration on the Mall. Trump officials had discussed Memorial Day on May 28, and July 4, but the Pentagon prefers Veterans Day on Nov. 11 — in part because it would coincide with the 100th anniversary of the victorious end of World War I and therefore be less associated with the president and politics. “That’s what everyone is hoping,” said the military official.
“It is unclear what role Trump would play, whether he may perhaps serve as a grand marshal or observe the spectacle from a reviewing stand. The location is still being discussed, though Trump has said he would like it to proceed along Pennsylvania Avenue, which links the Capitol and the White House. It would be the same route as Trump’s inaugural parade and pass by his family’s showpiece: Trump International Hotel.”
Samuel Johnson said in 1775 that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.
Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii wrote on Twitter that the millions would be better spent on more VA doctors, military housing and benefits, and other direct benefits to veterans and service members. Not on a parade to glorify politicians.

Reblogged this on David R. Taylor-Thoughts on Education and commented:
SMH…sounds like it will be one of those parades they have in Moscow with are the soldiers marching in step….lol

I hope the military slow walks this juvenile request, which might be appropriate for North Korea, and does a super complete cost-of-service report before cleaning up one tank or whatever weapon system needs to be prettified for a parade. One commentator said that if Trump wanted the full spectrum of mobile artillery on display, the cost would have to include repaving every street for the parade and every street used in prepping for the parade. Mr. ShowBiz President should also pay for this non-essential ego-fulfilling nonsense himself. Samuel Johnson had it right. So does Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii.

Obviously the Orange IDIOT is planning to make money off of this event. I say that if the military has to march, have them in unison raise their stiff R arms and give him the middle finger salute. It is what he deserves for being our “Great Leader’.
Why does the US have to waste money on a useless parade to impress other countries and our citizens of our military power? We currently spend more money on the military than the next 7 countries combined. We sell 57% of the world their military hardware so they can kill and destroy the same as we do. We are engaged in military operations in 70 countries. Isn’t that enough?

Herr Tump wants to be treated like the dictator he aspires to be. Such militarism is one sign of a fascist state.
He will claim it is to “honor our troops”, but it really is to flatter him. “Cadet Bone Spurs” never served in the military, but now he is Commander in Chief, and that’s STILL not enough for his sick ego.
This will cost many millions of dollars to put on, while tens of millions of Americans cannot afford health insurance, housing, and regular meals.

Sigh. Where will it end? All I can hope is that it will. If this thing actually gets planned, it’s going to need massive resistance. Physical resistance, as in bodies in the streets, not just a bunch of people watching online and gasping about how sick Trump is. At some point Resistance is going to demand actual action.
And then as part of the Resistance, we really need to think about what comes next. Trump has shown us the ultimate low we can sink to (at least, I sure hope it’s the ultimate low). So now what heights can we rise to? If Trump is all about taking food, healthcare, education and basic security away from the most vulnerable among us, how can we provide those things for everyone? If Trump is all about military dominance, how can we roll back the U.S. military footprint at home and abroad? If Trump is such a barbarian, how can we be better people?

“Physical resistance, as in bodies in the streets,” Are you talking about violence, in which case there will be bodies on the streets, blood soaked bodies? Peaceful resistance is fine as per the women’s marches and the other peaceful demonstrations.
Hillary would not have requested such shows of military power and prowess.

Who said anything about violence? Bodies in the street. As in, are you, personally, willing to stand in front of a tank?
And, you’re right, Hillary wouldn’t have requested such a domestic show of power. That would be such a distraction to her use of military power abroad.

The above comment about Hillary Clinton planning to use military power abroad if she was elected (because she just would, to do something or other, and that’s that) was brought to you by the person who spent the entire fall posting that Donald Trump was absolutely, positively no worse than Hillary Clinton and repeating the worst attacks on Hillary’s character (she is as dishonest and corrupt as Trump, you know) to convince us that it was so.
At some point, resistance is going to demand actual VOTING. And since Jesus is not running, that probably means voting for someone who isn’t perfect. It means understanding the difference between being a business as usual democrat — for bad AND good — and a man who expressed the exact same Fascist views all during the campaign whom you kept insisting was no worse than a business as usual Democrat.
“If Trump is all about taking food, healthcare, education and basic security away from the most vulnerable among us, how can we provide those things for everyone?” NOW you ask this question?

Military Refuses to Participate in Trump’s Parade, Citing Bone Spurs
By Andy Borowitz10:54 A.M.
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—The Pentagon has turned down Donald J. Trump’s request for a grand military parade in Washington, D.C., citing a sudden outbreak of bone spurs that would prevent men and women in uniform from participating.
Harland Dorrinson, a Pentagon spokesman, said that, within an hour of Trump’s request, more than a hundred thousand military personnel complained that they were suffering from acute cases of bone spurs that would make marching in such a parade a painful ordeal.
“In the history of the U.S. military, we have never experienced a bone-spur epidemic of this magnitude,” the spokesman said. “Regrettably, however, we have no choice but to issue thousands of deferments.”
A statement from the bone-spur sufferers said that they would continue to valiantly serve their country around the world in a non-marching capacity, and offered an alternative to their participation in Trump’s proposed pageant.
“President Trump is welcome to march in the parade all by himself if he would finally like to enlist,” the statement read.

I have another idea for this parage. Instead of the active military with tanks and jets passing by for Trump to review, we have all the combat vets that have lost limbs in this country’s endless, never-ending wars pass in review in their wheelchairs or wearing their high tech robotic legs and arms followed by all the combat vets that kept their arms and legs but live with the horror of PTSD.

Part of the utter brilliance of that phrase is the use of the word “Cadet”. It’s someone not quite ready to be a real soldier, let alone a commander. I enjoy thinking of Trump’s tantrum at being called that (since he did spend some time at a military academy). The perfect word for him. He is a cadet.

I find this frightening. Trump believes that the US can bully its way into forcing N. Korea into abandoning its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Kim Jong Un has seen what happened to Saddam Hussain and believes his only way to stop the West from toppling N. Korea is to put up a show of force. At what point will he believe he’s had enough? Where is diplomacy? Experienced state department people are gone.
The people in rural areas are starving but Kim will always get whatever he wants. Sanctions hurt ordinary people.

Vice President Mike Pence completed his first day in Japan yesterday, meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera, participating in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and reaffirming the United States’ unwavering commitment to the United States-Japan alliance.
Something else the Vice President did will send a powerful message to both our allies in Asia and the international community beyond: He announced that the United States will soon unveil the toughest and most aggressive round of economic sanctions on North Korea ever.
“We will continue to isolate North Korea until it abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile programs once and for all,” Vice President Pence said. “We have brought unprecedented diplomatic and economic pressure to bear on North Korea through our maximum pressure campaign.”

Pentagon’s Sloppy Bookkeeping Means $6.5 Trillion Can’t Pass an Audit
August 8, 2016 in News by Slad
The Defense Department over the years has been notorious for its lax accounting practices. The Pentagon has never completed an audit of how they actually spend the trillions of dollars on wars, equipment, personnel, housing, healthcare and procurements.
An increasingly impatient Congress has demanded that the Army achieve “audit readiness” for the first time by Sept. 30, 2017, so that lawmakers can get a better handle on military spending. But Pentagon watchdogs think that may be mission impossible, and for good reason.
A Department of Defense inspector general’s report released last week offered a jaw-dropping insight into just how bad the military’s auditing system is.
The Defense Finance and Accounting Service, the behemoth Indianapolis-based agency that provides finance and accounting services for the Pentagon’s civilian and military members, could not provide adequate documentation for $6.5 trillion worth of year-end adjustments to Army general fund transactions and data.
