Jan Resseger, a social justice warrior in Ohio, explains here why public school, was important to her as a child and why her own children went to public schools.
Her thoughts are especially pertinent given the propaganda barrage from Betsy DeVos and her friends and the recent collapse of Ohio’s biggest charter school scam (ECOT).

Why My Family Chose Public Schools
What, I’m going to spend $120k per year over the next 12 years for what I can get for free?

Public schools are often the hub of a community, and sometimes they are the glue helps to hold the community together. Public schools give young people the opportunity to learn with a variety of students from different classes and backgrounds. NO! Poverty does not rub off on other students. If anything, the more appropriate behavior of some students may improve the conduct of some students with marginal social skills. Public schools provide opportunity for all. A comprehensive public school with rich curricula can help students figure out who they want to be based on their strengths and interests. They expose young people to new people and things they would never have experienced otherwise. It might be a play, a book, a sport or an interest, but all students will get history and civics to help them develop into responsible citizens.
Public schools are like a lighthouse, offering light and guidance, but always vigilant. While some students may drift off into boats that may very well sink, they can always find their way back to the lighthouse where they will be protected and welcome.

Public tax dollars should not pay for religious education, which is now happening. You can have your choice, but pay for it on your own. All that private schools do is segregate society. They wall off students from the real world, with all its diversity and divergent thinking. We are not preparing young people for globalization and a shrinking world when we do that.

What will the advocates of choice say when they learn that tax dollars go to teach radical Islam to students? But wait. They already suggest the specter of sharia law hanging over our nation. Still, they advocate allowing the teaching of radical religious doctrine on the taxpayer’s dime. Why is it that I do not understand this?
