Mayor Rahm Emanuel continues his crusade to push public schools out of Chicago.
In a wave of closings and consolidation, the mayor found room for a new charter school run by a megachurch and a hip hop artist. The mother of the hip hop artist serves on the zchicago Board of Education.
“Chicago Public Schools on Friday moved ahead with school closing and merger proposals that would affect thousands of kids next school year.
“Under a previously announced plan, four South Side schools would close over the summer and the district would send hundreds of displaced students to surrounding schools. One building would be demolished to make way for a new high school, and privately operated charter schools would take over two other sites, under the district’s plan.
“Students at two predominantly African-American elementary schools near downtown would merge with more diverse campuses. One of those buildings, in the growing South Loop area, would gradually convert into a new high school.
“In addition, Hirsch, one of the city’s lowest-enrolled high schools, would share space for a privately run charter school program that’s backed by a local megachurch and a foundation headed by hip-hop artist Common…
“Hirsch, one of the city’s most underenrolled neighborhood high schools, would open its campus to the Art In Motion charter school next fall. CPS said the charter program, which is backed in part by the New Life Covenant Church and Common Ground Foundation, would first open to seventh- and eighth-graders before expanding to include a high school program.
“Mahalia Hines, a member of the Chicago Board of Education and mother of the hip-hop performer Common, also serves on the board of her son’s foundation.”
Does Illinois have conflict of interest laws?

Word throughout Washington DC is that Betsy Devos will not last much longer. Word says that Devos is frustrated with her lack of progress and the push backs are taking its toll on her. Funny thing that most of Trumps cabinet people have all been either fired or left except for Devos. However, the word is that its only a matter of time.

My only concern Is what rough beast, its hour come round at last, would be hauled in to replace her — & I don’t want to find out the answer to, “How could it possibly be worse?”

I’m being charitable in presuming that Common’s efforts are well-intentioned, based on misinformation rather than greed.

His mother is on the school board. I’m thinking ignorance is not the problem here.

Don’t worry, all the people affected will vote for Rahm again, just like they did last time….

Rahm is slowly resolving the “black problem” by driving them all out of the city. Provide top notch public schools for the upper classes and disperse the rest of the population across the city searching for a compatible charter. It’s simple really. Eliminate all the neighborhood public institutions and what’s left?

That’s the New Orleans plan where the city has done everything it can to discourage the return of the poor while gentrification explodes with high priced real estate.

Ed reformers refer to public school students as the children “left behind” in public schools.
They do not now and will not in the future support ANY of these schools because they hope they all close and are replaced by charter schools and publicly funded private schools.
Go look at the ed reform coverage of the Illinois school funding bill. It was as if public schools don’t exist. The entire coverage was voucher cheerleading.
90% of the kids in Illinois? Not interested

Rahm Emanuel isn’t continuing HIS crusade — he’s continuing Obama’s 8-year crusade to replace public schools with private charter schools…a crusade that would have continued with HRC and her version of DeVos whom she would have appointed.

No, HRC WOULD NOT HAVE APPOINTED DEVOS. That’s ridiculous.

You’re right. She would have appointed someone nice like Arne Duncan. Who would have continued the privatization agenda and we would all go right along with it because after all, that’s our guy.

No, Dienne. Your hatred for Hillary is very off-putting.
Why do you never get upset about Trump?
Why do you concentrate your hatred on Hillary?
Very odd.

The Chicago Tribune just had an excellent article on this very subject. School choice is a factor in the low enrollment at neighborhood schools but also there are a plethora of concerns with redistribution of students to other schools. Not only is there the amount of travel time to get to other schools but also young people are forced to cross gang lines. This is more than simply an educational problem. Where are the true leaders?

Nancy–the “true leaders” are probably some of the very same people being pushed out of the city.
That having been said, I hope they didn’t move too far away (lots of people moving into the surrounding ‘burbs), because charters coming to EVERY neighborhood in ILL-Annoy, & sooner than we think.
Stay alert & active–resist!
