Ken Bernstein, who blogs at The Daily Kos as Teacher Ken, likes to parse articles of interest. In this post, he parses Charles M. Blow’s defense of the truth. Over the past few days, I got the attention of many Trump supporters, in response to a post expressing my amazement about bumper stickers such as “I love my country, I hate my government.” So this post is for them. Among the sillier things said was that the Constitution has nothing to do with the government, although I refer to it as the document that defines our government. I was called many names, some unprintable here. On Twitter, I was the recipient of many insults hurled by people who identified themselves as part of the MAGA cult.
If they are still around, I hope they read Charles Blow, who wrote:
“…we must develop a societal strategy for protecting the true in a post-truth world, and the first step is that we must never stop saying: Donald Trump is a liar.”
I have been swarmed before, once by homeschooling advocates, after I dared to say that some parents are not responsible. But this is the first time I was swarmed by the MAGA crowd. The hatefulness was dense. As I often say, no one is required to read what I write. If you don’t like it, there are many other blogs that are more to your liking. If you can’t be civil, to me and other readers, go elsewhere.

Twitter I can’t help you with . I only use it to log on here to comment. But Trump is refreshing, his lies are so blatant ,it is like passing the Nation Enquirer at the check out counter. Good for a chuckle “Unicorn born to elephant at Bronx zoo”
Of course there are those who have to read the story . A few of them posted here this weekend.
The more dangerous lies are the ones that aren’t so obvious . The ones that say Americans crave more trickle down tax reform. The ones that neglect to point out how Americas actions around the world have devastated millions from Latin America to the middle east . The ones that will bring us perilously close to a possible Nuclear encounter . The ones that have kept the word climate change caused disaster out of the main stream media discussions of Harvey . That unfortunately is a bipartisan effort with always enough Democrats to work with the Republicans to screw the American people.
That is why we have an outrageous lair in the Oval office .

Here’s a song that was written by a 12-year old about how she handles/handled bullies. Grace won America’s Got Talent in 2016 and signed a record contract with Columbia records and she was still 12 years old when she did. This son shows why she won.
Here’s the lyrics that Gace wrote for her song.
“You see a girl in the hallway
And then you whisper to your friend
“Who is she anyway?”
You forgot what she looks like in like a day
But your words don’t hurt me
I will be OK
‘Cause you don’t hurt me
I won’t mold to
Your silly words
I won’t live inside your world
‘Cause your punches and your names
All your jokes and stupid games
They don’t work
No, they don’t hurt
Watch them just go right through me
Because they mean nothing to me
I’m not clay
You see that girl in the hallway
Smile on her face as she walks away
Trying to tear her down was your first mistake
‘Cause little do you know
She wasn’t built to break
‘Cause you don’t hurt me
I won’t mold to
Your silly words
I won’t live inside your world
‘Cause your punches and your names
All your jokes and stupid games
They don’t work
No, they don’t hurt
Watch them just go right through me
Because they mean nothing to me
Try to change my shape
But, baby, I’m not clay
Sorry, not today
‘Cause, baby, I’m not…
Try to change my shape
But, baby, I’m not clay
Sorry, not today
‘Cause, baby, I’m not clay
Your silly words

Joel,
Are you sure you don’t mean the lies of Mayor de Blasio? Why, even the “liberal NY Times” knows what a corrupt liar he is.
Just like at today’s so-called “endorsement” of de Blasio:
“Mr. de Blasio has not shaken free of detractors’ suspicions about his ethical compass…..
Disquiet about his character is felt by many New Yorkers, including some on the left who enthusiastically support his policies. There is a moral haughtiness that has served him and the city ill in relations with Albany. It also renders him almost incapable of publicly admitting error.”
Now THAT reminds me of the kind of endorsements that the NY Times gave to Hillary Clinton! There is nothing like “friends” like the NY Times to remind readers how corrupt and dishonest you really are to get people to vote for you. After all, when “even the liberal NY Times” knows how corrupt you are, people can’t wait to vote for you.
Don’t forget, it’s Mayor de Blasio’s CHARACTER that is a real problem here. He may have a done few good things, but he is unethical and corrupt and will sell us all out for a dime. But New Yorkers should vote for that corrupt candidate anyway. It sounds just like your endorsement of Hillary Clinton! And you only have to look at the comments to see how much those insidious attacks that have been non-stop about Mayor de Blasio’s CHARACTER have overwhelmed all the good things he has done.
I told you so.

I’m not comparing Bill de Blasio to Hillary.
I’m comparing the attacks on his character to the attacks on Hillary’s character you (and the NY Times) made and repeated ad nauseam. After all, the NY Times “endorsed” de Blasio just like you “endorsed” Hillary. It’s just that of course you both had serious doubts as to the candidate’s character. Just like Fred Smith does. Mayor de Blasio acts in ways that only the most corrupt and dishonest politicians act. But we should vote for him anyway since there isn’t a better choice. Just like Hillary.
In fact, you DEFENDED Fred Smith for claiming Mayor de Blasio was just as dishonest and corrupt as Hillary. I’m sure Fred Smith believes this so-called “endorsement” is just as ringing as it could be! After all, you and he know that Mayor de Blasio is the only one responsible for these attacks since he is willing to sell out NYers for some donations. When he loses, it is all his fault.
I love that you now are doing exactly what I knew you’d do and blaming Bill de Blasio for being the corrupt politician you knew he was. It is all his fault that the NY Times is attacking his character. He is – after all — one of the most corrupt politicians ever to run for Mayor. Only Hillary is worse. Isn’t that what you fake “progressives” claim?
I call you “fake” because you and Fred Smith never say that Bernie Sanders has sold out Americans by endorsing the DFER candidate in Virginia — one of the few states where public education not entirely owned by the DFERs already. You don’t question Bernie’s character when he works so hard to sell out public schools. You just think he has a difference of opinion. It’s not as if he were corrupt like de Blasio.
This endorsement is exactly what you believe, right? Mayor de Blasio is corrupt and awful, but at least he isn’t as bad as the alternative. With “endorsements” like that from fake “progressives” who only excuse Bernie Sanders but not Bill de Blasio, he has a good chance of being defeated. Just like you “endorsed” the corrupt Hillary whose character was worse than any candidate in history to you!
And you will say it is all his fault. And mine. You will hold yourself blameless as you helped attack his CHARACTER just like you did to Hillary Clinton. Just like you DON’T when Bernie Sanders tries hard to undermine public education in Virginia.
Everything you said about Hillary Clinton is what this NY Times article said about Mayor de Blasio and what Fred Smith said about Mayor de Blasio. He just doesn’t have the CHARACTER necessary to be a Mayor. And it will be all his fault when he is defeated because you worked so hard to make sure the world knew what a terrible character he had.

Evangelical Christians lie all of the time and it is not a mark against their character because they are lying for a reason. (They are persecuted, don’t you know!) Anyone who lies on their behalf is not seen as someone with a charater defect but a warrior on their side. The same can be said for Trumps business interests (A reduction in corporate taxes will increase worker’s wages!). When he lies for them (they know this is a lie) he doesn’t lose character points, he gets “high fives” from corporate CEOs for lying for them.

Those living near those coal mines including many of the miners who are desperate enough to risk their health and families health ,are living in a living toxic waste site . If it isn’t already gone Blair Mountain is about to be taken off the map . You probably have no clue about that . They do not teach that in most schools .
It is hard to call that an extraction state . That is a “SCUMBAG” politician who is a corrupt piece of Turd representing his own and other coal producers interests and not the people of W.Va

Dear Joel Herman,
You truly keep contradicting yourself. It’s hard to keep straight what you believe.
But let’s see if I have it right: You believe that the voters of West Virginia have voted to embrace Donald Trump and every single right wing candidate and defeat every liberal one who ran in the past because they are really just waiting for an even MORE liberal candidate. And because they haven’t been offered a candidate who is liberal ENOUGH they decided to embrace the candidates who are telling them they will have MORE coal mining and less regulations because the EPA is evil.
Is that your argument? Because that’s sure a winning one.
If only Bernie Sanders had run, you know he would have won 99% of the vote!
I’m not a bot but I’m wondering if YOU are. You certainly attack every Democrat you can except the one who entirely embrace the DFER agenda. Why are you even on an education board when you will sell out public education in a heartbeat as long as the white workers who you have such sympathy for are happy.
Bill de Blasio, who has done more for public schools than any NYC Mayor in the last 20 years — not good enough and corrupt
Tim Kaine who fought for public education in Virginia and refused to sell out to DFER — Joel says he’s not good enough and corrupt and a sell-out
Terry McAuliffe who fought for public education in Virginia and opposed the DFER’s hopes to force public money to pay for more charters — Joel says he’s not good enough and corrupt
DFER candidate that Bernie endorses — Joel says he is a great guy who deserves a chance because he really cares about people.

^^to repeat — public education matters to you as much as it matters to Bernie Sanders. And Bernie is happy to embrace those “good public charters” that DFER likes. And you are happy to attack any Democrat who doesn’t because OTHER issues are more important to you and if it means selling out public education, well that’s just the choice you make.
Do you have kids in public schools? I don’t understand why you are here because I don’t see it as very important to you except as a place where unions still flourish.

Dear Hillary Bot
Justice like Manchin is your type of Democrat, a billionaire coal mine owner . Who just went Republican . Maybe I am saying if the Democratic party had stood for the rights of those Union Coal miners to have a union when they sold out to corporate interests in 2009 those voters would still be overwhelming in one of the Nations bastions of unionism. The UMW would have destroyed Massey coal and the other criminals . . Instead they threw their lot in with the same Wall Street vultures that attacked Unions and Pensions in that state. through federal laws that allowed them to transfer all legacy costs to shell companies . Although Obama lost W.Va twice he won coal country in 2008. .
Perhaps a little socialism would have been called for in 08 . Employ more of those people than worked in the mines. . Cleaning up the Superfund sites A war on poverty instead of Wall Street Bail out. While you worked to transition them to other industry. And handed part of that bill to Manchin and Justice.
The fed could have lent those trillions . 17 of them to states at 0% . Instead of Wall Street . While they sent those banks into Bankruptcy resolution under Supervision of Federal Judges . That isn’t Socialism that is CAPITALISM. That is what we do when you can’t anti up. Except if you were Barack then you put Wall Street Criminal over the interest of the American people . Even Reagan .sent a thousand bankers to jail. But how would Holder ever get a Job back at his law firm.
“Sanders’ victory in one of the poorest states in the nation was anchored in his message that the economy is rigged against working Americans. Exit poll data showed that 61% of Democratic primary voters were very worried about the state of the economy, and 55% of that group voted for Sanders. He also beat Clinton among women 52% to 38% and also among independents, by nearly 40 percentage points. OOPS
Type and babble on about the Republic-rat in Virginia, Northam probably another loser .That race is neck and neck Truman was probably right . Real Democrats are people you seem to object to. . They will probably chose the real thing the Republican in Virginia .
Nite nite Hill Bot Wont be responding.

If only Bernie’s DFER candidate had won the primary, we could all rest happy knowing we had yet ANOTHER Democrat willing to sell out public schools. With Joel Herman’s approval. Because apparently it is okay for some candidates to sell out public schools and Joel will attack anyone who dares mention it, but if one of the pro-public school candidatures does’t embrace everything Joel wants then he will call him a corrupt sell-out and make sure we never stop talking about what corrupt sell-outs they are. Even if he claims he voted for the evil sell-out.
Meanwhile Joel insists his DFER candidates are above reproach and may not be criticized at all. They are perfect and have not a single character flaw. But any Dem who Joel doesn’t approve of is a corrupt sell-out and any person who supports them is a “bot”. Even if they are the only candidate who supports public education and Joel’s DFER candidate is happy to undermine it. You still aren’t allowed to criticize Joel’s candidate because that candidate believes in the white working class man. The ones who love Trump but are supposedly just dying to vote for Bernie, says Joel.
I can’t figure out why Joel is on this education board when he attacks the Democrats who don’t like charters and support public education the most and he forbids anyone from attacking his favorite DFER candidates that he decides are just undermining public education because they really, truly believe that charters are superior. So they are doing it because they are admirable.
With friends like Joel, I can’t imagine why public education is struggling to get support.
I don’t like Manchin. I don’t like Justice. I like people who don’t sell out public education. That’s why you can support the DFER candidate that will sell out public education and attack me because I don’t agree with you that selling out public education is a fine thing to do as long as you get some racist white workers who adore Trump to vote Democrat.
You can attack me and slur me and I STILL refuse to sell out public education like you want me to so the white racist Trump voters in West Virginia will be happy. Sorry, Joel. Public education is just more important to me than it is to you.

When I taught high school government, the moral I tried to impart on my students was that the Constitution, warts and all, was the single most significant influence that defined being American. It defined who we were. I started the year asking them what students thought were the key elements and issues that made us “American.” They listed things like sports, music, food, the Civil War, military power, comic books (Superman!), geography, and films. By the end of the year, they were able to ties those initial thoughts to the Constitution.

I’m reading up on the latest ed reform lobbying group in preparation for the big marketing push:
“Russlynn Ali is the Chief Executive Officer of XQ. She brings decades of experience in many arenas to her position, prime among them a knowledge of what is truly required to design schools that will best serve American students for years to come. Before coming to XQ Institute, Russlynn served as assistant secretary of civil rights at the U.S. Department of Education. Russlynn also serves as managing director of education at Emerson Collective.
Laurene Powell Jobs chairs XQ’s board of directors and is the president of Emerson Collective. Her two decades in the education field have convinced her that America is ready for a sea change to overhaul the system.
Deep collaborators include: Yo-Yo Ma, the globally accomplished musician and creator; Marc Ecko, Chief Brand and Creative Officer of COMPLEX, and longtime youth and justice advocate; Geoffrey Canada, education advocate and founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone; Michael Klein, global strategic and financial adviser and Managing Partner of M Klein, and Leon Wieseltier, Isaiah Berlin Senior Fellow in Culture and Policy at the Brookings Institution.”
Another ed reform initiative that completely excludes anyone who comes out of a public school. Laurene Powell Jobs is “convinced” America is “ready” for whatever these people are selling. She knows this…how?
They’re “reinventing” public schools without 1. public schools, and 2. the public.
Do they teach this kind of absolutely insufferable arrogance in Ivy League schools? Where does it come from? How do you “transform” a public entity without any input from the public? Don’t we hold elections to determine the direction of public entities?

What do you do when the boss, whatever his other gifts and foibles, is fervently committed to some single monumentally stupid idea? I am referring, of course, to the Wall.
By now, I’m sure that Mr. Trump’s advisors have explained to him that almost all the drugs smuggled into the country come here secreted away in vehicles arriving through legal ports of entry. And they’ve explained that the small amount of drugs walked across the border by human “mules” won’t be stopped by the billions and billions of spending on the Wall, that tunnels can be dug deeper than six feet and that the cartels will simply start relying more on inexpensive drones, balloons, and catapults, and on transport by sea and air.
But the argument that we need to build the Wall continues to play well with Mr. Trump’s base. The idea is concrete enough and YUUGE enough to capture their imaginations. Attacking “foreign elements” and immigrants has always been an effective means of propagandizing poor, uneducated, alienated, and frustrated citizens, as the careers of Hitler and Milosevic made quite clear. Hate is great propaganda.
So, what to do in the face of the facts about the Wall? Create “alternative” ones. “Alternative facts” are nothing new in our politics. How well I remember Mr. Cheney saying, repeatedly, whenever you placed him in front of a camera, that after 911, we had to invade Iraq, even though those 911 conspirators were extremists from Saudi Arabia with no established connection to Saddam Hussein. The Wall, for all its ineffectiveness at curtailing drug smuggling, remains a highly effective hate-mongering tool. And it appeals to poor, disaffected rural white Americans who are afraid of the changing demographics in our country.
In Book 3 of The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, John Maynard Keynes used the tongue-in-cheek thought experiment of a government paying people to bury banknotes in coal mines and then leaving it to private industry to dig them up again.
The Wall is just such a project.
But expect the lies about it to continue flowing. Because hate.

When a candidate that the right wing embraces “lies” outright — like saying he had Obama’s Kenyan birth certificate — that’s just him being a funny guy. It’s not a problem.
When a candidate that the right wing despises does not publicly acknowledge that of course they were selling state department policy changes in exchange for big donations to their foundation (Hillary) or of course they were selling donations their campaign to elect Dems to the NY State Senate in exchange for giving away NYC assets far below market cost to enrich those donors, then they are “lying”.
Because those Dems never admitted that they were intentionally selling their power to the highest bidder and financially rewarding anyone who donated to their foundation or campaign to elect more Dems, they are the biggest liars who ever entered politics!
If only they weren’t “liars” they would admit what their right wing critics know — that they would sell out America and all progressive ideas as long as they got a lot of money for it. Now THAT is deserving of attack. Not Trump, who just makes some jokes.
And the left is so very helpful to the right wing in identifying how corrupt and unethical all those Democrat “liars” are. Those Dems just refuse to tell the “truth”. which, is, of course, that they can’t wait to sell out all the progressive ideas for big bucks just like the right wing keeps saying. How DARE they not just admit that they are big sell outs? What a liar Mayor de Blasio is for not just admitted that he wants to sell out NYC to the highest bidder! If only he told the “truth” about that maybe people wouldn’t think he was just a crook.

I have days when I truly wish I could forget about the Liar in Chief who now occupies the former White House which I now think of as The Liar’s Lair. I often ponder how I can manage to remove myself from a community and state which participated heavily in electing this fraud to his position. I curtail mingling with those in situations in which I know he will be touted and will have to see folks dressed in their cultwear hats and shirts paying homage. It’s like the time when H1N1 vaccine not yet available and constant worry over contracting the deadly virus and seeing news reports daily of those who succumbed, including a gal my daughter attended school with who was a new mother. I fear that an encounter could turn deadly. I had a confrontation at the grocery even before the primaries with a guy trying to get me to sign a petition to put trump on the Indiana ballot and I refused and argued with him that he was not even worthy of being on the ballot. So, there is no way I’d follow a cult member home due to the alerts on his truck. (I am glad you were not directly confronted at that point.) TWICE in local post office have had encounters with other patrons loudly yacking about trump related issues, complaining about protests. I have already decided I would not go to a house for help if I had car issues right in front of it if I’d seen a trump/pence lawn sign last year (which was half the houses on my drive to work). So, I think perhaps you now have personal experience with what those of us who live among densely trump aligned folks experience. They are in it for real…..extremely dedicated and defensive with baskets of chips for their shoulders just looking for somebody to try to knock them off. It’s something you must tread lightly. Just don’t engage directly and don’t sign their clipboards. I have reduced engagement in volunteer participation to just a couple of locations in which political discourse is minimal. I even drive to another community to shop and eat to reduce encounters with “yo trump” sort of folks. They can be armed and there is nothing good that can come of following someone overtly announcing their support to their home. ( I look at bumper stickers for gun comments and trump blabber and don’t park near them if stickers seem aggressive….such as time a truck said “this is my family” and instead of stick children and pets showed silhouettes of weapons.) I understand your curiosity but did worry about a lone woman going to the neighborhood of a trumpeter. There can be loaded firearms in either the vehicle, on the person or just inside of the home and if you are on their private property they may aim and fire. I won’t ever enter property of someone I am not already acquainted with and I told my family that if I go missing for hours without contact from my cell just drive the route I took because if car breaks down am not going to take the chance of going to a random house and knocking on a door (and I am more diligent than ever to keep my car serviced and filled with gas). Would never ever follow a trump decorated vehicle anywhere in my community. It’s not safe. So, am sorry you got hate dumped but now you know how they operate. I hope you won’t go alone into the “territory” of a blatantly self announcing trumpeter…..for your own safety. If you do have to contact law enforcement regarding any threats I hope you are well supported. Hopefully this will pass and you will be able to return to business as usual. I agree that the lying is tedious and dangerous and should be called out. But you need to take precautions when doing so. Journalists as well as bloggers are definitely in the crosshairs.
