In the past few days, we learned that the New America Foundation fired Barry Lynn, a fierce and learned critic of monopolies, because his work directly criticized Google, one of the Foundation’s major donors.
Now Barry Lynn has created an independent organization to battle monopoly power.
It is called Citizensagainstmonopoly.org.

New America’s plan, “Starting from Scratch or a New Vision for Higher Ed”, has Gates written all over it. No surprise since he’s a NAF funder. One part of the plan is to turn state tax dollars over to legacy admission colleges, which will starve funds from public universities. Sounds like the Koch/Gates oligarchy, doesn’t it? The plan also echoes the legislation of Marco Rubio which calls for student outcome measures determining accreditation.

I looked over the document. The private foundations who are funding this scheme are only concerned with bang for the buck outcomes. Salary earnings of graduates are to br tracked after graduation–the measure of choice for a high quality education. These would-be micromanagers also intend to add specific tests of thinking skills as indicators of the performance of higher education.

The “liberal” professors who endorsed Clinton in a public letter lacked the foresight to add to their list of issues, the oligarchs’ takeover of the framework upon which university purpose rests. They failed to recognize the impending threat and the opportunity to tell the media and the public about it.
But, really, how likely was the issue’s inclusion, when the Clinton’s are so closely associated with the groups that are out to commandeer higher ed. in service to men like Gates, i.e. the Center for American Progress and New America Foundation?

Here is a somewhat related Vox piece about how much control private employers actually have.
And it includes a nice critique of free market fundamentalism as well. Worth a read.
