The hits just keep on coming!
Betsy DeVos just hired a former dean from for-profit online DeVry University to police fraud in higher education.
DeVry was forced to pay $100 million for defrauding students.

The wolf is guarding the hen house. Disgusting but not unexpected.
DeVos, DeVry, DeCepticon … we’re really in dutch now …
Sorry, Adolf, I meant Deutsch …
LOL
Yeah, there’s NO corruption in our government. 🙂 We have the best government MONEY CAN BUY.
DeVos was always a political operative, and she still is- ask anyone in her home state of Michigan.
This is the mayor of Detroit:
“There was far more interest in her political agenda than in educating kids,” Duggan said. “She’s doing the same thing in Washington that she did here.”
I hope students don’t believe the US Department of Education is a credible source of information on colleges or student loans.
Find a better source. Someone without an agenda.
“There was far more interest in her political agenda. . . ”
And that “political” agenda is the regressive xtian fundamentalist right’s desire to turn the US into an xtian caliphate.
Well, of course she did. Someone who thinks that almost all campus sexual assaults are the fault of the victim as well as the rapist is in charge of the Ed. Dept. civil rights division.
And now, an educational fraudster in charge of policing educational fraud.
Why are we surprised? DeVos is an Education Secretary who doesn’t seem to believe in public education.
It’s all of a piece. Appoint people who will destroy the departments they are in charge of.
Zorba, no qualification. DeVos hates public schools.
Yes, you’re right. She would like for all schools to be totally privatized. Preferably with a right-wing, Christianist curriculum to brainwash the kids.
Between her and Pence, they would love nothing more than to institute a form of Christian sharia law here.
Too bad if you are Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, an atheist, whatever. Too bad if you are LGBT. Too bad if you are an independent woman who would like to have full control over her own reproductive health, her job, her finances.
Exactly Zorba!
What is one more crook added to the vast and growing Trump mafia that operates out of the White House?
Is there no end to the outrageous folly which is inundating, drowning – quite literally now with Harvey – our nation.
I wonder how long it will take until we actually implode as has nation after nation throughout history. They become rich and powerful and think they are impervious to disaster. Wrong.,
The rich and powerful think they are immune from disasters. And every time the rich and powerful throughout history have become this corrupt in their thinking and actions, they have caused civilizations to collapse and wars to rage out of control.
Who better to police fraud than someone who has perfected the art.
This is no different than firing the shepherd and hiring a hungry, ravenous wolf to watch over the tasty sheep.
true that
There is no end in sight. No light. Tunnel is long and winding. Will the snakes (plethora of them, which is growing insanely and rapidly) consume themselves? I am a survivor of the NYCDOE, where I witnessed educators carried out on stretchers, nervous breakdowns, heart attacks, trauma, etc. It became such a hostile environment that it was like entering another country. It continues….Students who bring mammoth issues into the schools, especially our urban schools (poverty in this century is a new breed of poverty) witness their teachers’ stress (test scores, oppressive management by incompetent leaders etc) and there is little for them to “survive” on or be nourished and educated in a way that allows social mobility. I am a public school advocate but at this point, there only remains a skeleton of what once existed as a place of learning and safety in our urban areas. For profit schools are demonstrating that they too are failing our children. Soon it will be blatant in the public’s eye and too many sacrificial lambs will have already been placed on the pyre. Our “little” voices still need to be heard. Resistance still needs to occur.
sighs heavily
Me too.
And there is really not much evident concern or noise from the Democrats.
Corruption thrives because it is not exposed and fought. Stopping this administration requires all hands to be on deck. The ship of state is sinking–cliche but I am truly feeling that it is.
For profit colleges and student loan problems are on a path to be more outrageous than ever, with veterans among those who are heavily marketed to.
You can bet that the Consumer Protection Agency will be cancelled out by the same strategy. Find the worst abusers and put them in charge of the deconstruction of that agencyand almost all of the gov’ment.
Time to reinvent higher education now that we have the model of Trump University to follow.
How about making schools “centers” where day care, medical support, counseling, parenting workshops etc are held.
yes yes yes
26 percent of American children live in poverty. Many can’t see the board because they don’t have decent eyeglasses. Many don’t have a warm coat to wear to school in the winter. Many have nowhere safe to play after school. Many American teenage girls can’t afford tampons or pads and are too embarrassed to say so. Many American parents regularly run out of diapers and haven’t the money to buy them. Many, many young parents are way in over their heads and haven’t a clue what to do or to whom to turn. It would be great to see these buildings serve a dual function, after school. But to make that happen, we would actually have to care enough about kids to invest in them.
“we would actually have to care enough about kids”
As noted Australian educator Phil Cullin would say “I’m with the kids. Are you?”
I have a vague recollection of someone writing about something like this years ago. I think her name was Ramich, Rubins, something like that. Oh now I remember, I think it was Ravitch. I’ll have to see if she’s still doing anything interesting and if her ideas are still relevant or if she has anything of value to say. 🙂
LOL
Diane,
Read “Reign of Error.”
None of that ever worked . Nixon killed it before it ever got going. . Turning Johnson’s “Great Lady into something ugly that the American people would not want to look at ”
Although I did read the other day , that even the crippled great Society lifted millions out of severe poverty .
So should young people take advice and information from the USDOE on financial matters that will literally affect the rest of their lives?
How do we know they’re not captured? Should young people take that risk?
I would say “no”- that they should look for less compromised advisers because we’re talking about 10’s of thousands of dollars in debt and 18 year olds, and if they are first generation college students their parents won’t be much help.
Where could they/should they go if the federal agency is compromised or captured?
Maybe there could be a volunteer org or something.
When I went to community college after high school I felt I got sound advice on what it should cost and whether I should borrow.
That was 25 years ago. Can young people still rely on this information, and if not, how is that fair to them? Where will they go for solid information? Who can they trust?
DeVos is either completely incommitent or there is another agenda at work.
Incompetent
And the other agenda, actively encourage profit-seeking, even if students are scammed. If students are scammed she can blame the public schools and unworthy parents.
