Eva Moskowitz has become a favorite of the Trump White House and the Republican Party.
Speaker Paul Ryan will visit her schools tomorrow.
“House Speaker Paul Ryan is planning to visit a Success Academy charter school in New York City on Tuesday, sources with knowledge of the visit told POLITICO New York.
Ryan’s visit will be the latest in a series of high-profile visits by Republicans to the city’s largest and most controversial charter network. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has visited Success Academy 1 in Harlem, and Ivanka Trump visited the same school shortly after the presidential election in November.
“Success CEO Eva Moskowitz was briefly on a short list to serve as education secretary under President Donald Trump, and Trump has praised the the city’s charters, likely referring to Success, since taking office. One of Success’ top donors, John Paulson, was an adviser to Trump during the campaign.
“The network’s boldface-named visitors and supporters also happen to be unpopular figures in deep blue New York City.
“Moskowitz has expressed interest in running for mayor for years, but her recent affiliation with the leaders of the national Republican party will likely complicate any future bid. She has been attacked by her longtime foes in the city’s teachers’ union, the United Federation of Teachers, for her ties to the Trump administration. Moskowitz has also been criticized by her staff for not speaking out against Trump policies that are unpopular in her schools.
“Ryan is a longtime supporter of charter schools.
“Spokespeople for Success and Ryan did not respond to requests for comment.

Ryan got his education at a public university but, like so many others among the selfish, he got his, and he could care less about opportunities for those that follow.

Yesterday, NYC’s City Council Speaker — one of NYC’s most powerful politicians — called forth a massive citizen protest to meet Ryan and the time and place of his visit to a Success Academy:

“City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito called on New
Yorkers to protest Success Academy CEO Eva Moskowitz and
House Speaker Paul Ryan during the GOP lawmaker’s planned
visit to a Harlem charter school on Tuesday.
” … ”
” ‘So when Speaker Ryan comes to New York City, we let him know
what we think about his agenda, right?’ Mark-Viverito said during a
panel discussion about the city’s plan to close Rikers Island this
afternoon.
“ ‘And we should be denouncing and holding Eva Moskowitz
responsible and accountable for bringing him here to our community.’ ”

“ ‘I just got an alert here which is disturbing to me that Speaker Ryan
will be in New York City visiting a charter school in Harlem and I hope
we organize ourselves to send a very strong message about what we
believe about all that he is doing,’ ” Mark-Viverito said.
“ ‘And coming into Harlem at that, right, where the decisions they’re
making are having severe, detrimental impacts on communities that
we represent is pretty, pretty disturbing.’ ”

Sad but true. It’s as if all of a sudden they’ve decided that the American way (that they claim they want to go back to) suddenly doesn’t work anymore. Therefore, they don’t want to pay their share of taxes for it. My aunt always said there was a difference between old money and the nouveau riche. Ryan and the Trumpeteers are nouveau riche. Money but no grace or dignity.

this is a smart move by the republicans. There are basically two parts to the reform movement…..vouchers and charters, and things have been written about the uneasiness between them. Seemingly, this would give the democrats an easy way to duck away from education issues…..we are adamantly against vouchers, and……charters……well…..we are opposed to the bad ones, but Bill Gates and Obama and Arne Duncan tried hard to establish the good ones. Not so fast, democrats. Republicans can half-heartedly say yay for vouchers, knowing that they will mostly be swatted away, and take over the charter reins from Bill Gates and Arne Duncan, gravitating toward the ones with wealthy foundation support, and emphasize how they are non union, and give people “choice.”
Democrats need to wake up and deal with the most horrible blunder of Obama’s legacy.

No, Joe. You’re wrong.
Democrats and the GOP are bipartisan when it comes to school choice, testing, and charters, all three of which are a gateway drug to freebasing vouchers.
Don’t look to the Democrats unless you enjoy being stabbed in the back. Can’t look to the GOP either, who are swampy as swampy can get.
To think that Obama gets rewarded at this point with $400,000 speeches that last two hours and a $60 million dollar book deal while Americans are left to have to fight for something as breathtakingly simple as public education.

So well-said, Norwegian Filmmaker. So many of our people, our institutions and our environment are hurting. Widespread poverty, attacks on public education, crumbling infrastructure, decimation of the working classes, lack of single payer, polluted air and water, and climate change are only a small slice of issues that Obama could put his name to and help make the world a better place.
Instead he plans to start a leadership institute to churn out the next generation of groveling politicians that will keep the plutocracy in place.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Carter has spend the entirety of his retirement years working on world peace, fair elections overseas and building homes for the poor in our own country. Carter is by far the better man.
Obama has entered the realm of the 1 percent, and is intent on preserving the social order that keeps things just the way they are,

This is PERFECT!
The man who has assured the American public that the health care “reform” he provided is going to help all Americans (which we know is a lie) will be visiting the charter school that claims the “reform” they are offering will help all at-risk children!
It’s perfect that the man who “reformed” health care in a way that benefits the richest Americans will be visiting schools that are symbolic of a “reform” that benefits the richest Americans. (Note Eva Moskowitz’ insistence that universal pre-k was unnecessary, that large class size for at-risk kids were unnecessary since her schools “proved’ that all at-risk could be turned into scholars in large classes! – In other words, she claims you can cut taxes and give less money to schools and still turn all children into high performing scholars. That’s something the right wing billionaires who underwrite her schools can support!)
No doubt Paul Ryan’s concern for the lives of poor children is just as sincere as Eva Moskowitz!
Hey, if you believe that the “reform” Paul Ryan is offering is really about helping the most vulnerable children then you will believe that the “reform” Eva Moskowitz promotes is about helping the most vulnerable children. In both cases, it is in service to the richest billionaires who are far more important to them (and most importantly, their quest for power and money) than those pesky poor children who should just disappear if they are not healthy or if they struggle to learn.
Could not think of a better man for Eva Moskowitz to embrace as the savior of poor children than the man who just reformed health insurance to throw so many of them off it because they just are too sick to matter.

The true face of so-called reform shows itself, as these grotesques do to public school children and teachers what they just did to people with pre-existing medical conditions.
What do you say now, reformers? Are you still going to maintain your “civil rights movement of out time” pitch, or will you follow the fetid winds coming out of Washington and sink your fangs into the carcass of public education?
As if we have to ask.

Why doesn’t Paul Ryan visit a public school in his district? Or anywhere else in Wisconsin?
These people are ridiculous. They in no way represent their constituents. They go OUT OF THEIR way to avoid showing their face in a public school in the states they (supposedly) represent.
Is advocacy for kids in public schools officially banned in DC?
They’re probably afraid someone will ask them to point to something they’ve done for any public school, anywhere, if they show up. The answer is “nothing”. They contribute absolutely nothing of value to any kid in any public school.

When does a member of Congress visit a public school? You know, in the states they supposedly represent?
I know very few of them attended public schools but surely we can direct them to the schools in their states and districts.
Should public school kids pass a hat and hire an advocate? They don’t seem to have any among the tens of thousands of federal employees they’re paying.
Maybe we can pay one privately. God knows none of these people are interested.

I am happy to report that Congressman Adam Schiff, who represents my district, visited my public school classroom two years ago. I had emailed him to pass along a compliment by a woman whom I had met; she had praised him for advancing the cause of Armenians on the floor of Congress. He immediately responded, asking when he could visit my class. He came the same day our eighth graders were having promotion rehearsal, so he was able to address our class of promoters in addition to the students in my class.
Congressman Schiff is one of the few politicians keeping my hope alive that there is still some integrity in Washington.

It’s not just Ryan. Half the US Department of Education tweets promote either charters or vouchers.

There’s not a lot of interest in the unfashionable public school sector.
Ed reform consistently omits public schools from their publicly-paid marketing efforts.
CLEARLY disfavored. Read anything these folks put out. It’s either open bashing of public schools or omitting or excluding public schools.
The only way a public school gets mentioned is IN RELATION to a charter or voucher scheme. Usually they tack on our schools in a throw-away paragraph at the end.
