From a correspondent in Pennsylvania:
“The latest charter reform farce is on its way to the House floor in Pennsylvania before lunch.
“Among all the poor elements, tied for the dumbest are:
“1. Families with multiple children enrolled in a cyber-charter may now opt not to receive a second or third computer. I mean really, what wouldthey do with them. They don’t really devote any time to learning. This saves money for the cyber charter. Two or three full state tuitions, and the corporations gives out only one computer.
“2. Charter Schools will now be compared to each other instead of public schools, thus assuring at least half will automatically be performing “above average,” instead of all PA Charters constantly being ranked as
“failing.”
Reading about the systematic destruction of public education, I’m beginning to think the motives might be even worse than just profiting. I keep being reminded of the Jim Crow literacy tests for voting and the illegality of teaching slaves to read. Are we watching the re-creation of a feudal system depending on an ignorant public? I don’t even see the reformers referring to the quality of education anymore. I haven’t even seen many comments about the uselessness of public schools – just new ways to save and make money. Am I being blinded by the dark?
You’re right, Mary: it’s not just about profit, but power and control, and the Overclass’ directly taking over the schools to institutionalize their dominance of both.
Once massive public money was opened up to opportunists under the name of testing “accountability,” there have been many, many moments when teachers have been able sit back and watch ideologies going head to head. It has been the notable lack of cohesive educational message which has 1) allowed profiteers to endlessly jump in and grab up the money and 2) kept reform after reform being both implemented but having no actual long-term support.
This is exactly the problem with monetizing education. If corporations decide what is adequate, they will continue to lower the ever lowering bottom line by offering the cheapest support to the student and the maximum profit to the company.
When complicit politicians and corporations write the rules, they can create “fake rules” designed to suit their objective to destroy public schools and promote the proliferation of poor performing cyber charters.
This is about making SLAVES to serve the Oligarchs, who really can’t do much of anything for themselves, except deceive to control.
