As reported earlier today, scores of parents are conducting a sit-in protest at CentralPark East 1, demanding the ouster of the principal.
Leonie Haimson attended the meeting of the school’s leadership team last night and reports here on what she learned.

The complaints against the principal were many. The parents refused to leave when the meeting ended. Although police were present, someone made a decision not to arrest the parents.
Debbie Meier, who founded the school in 1974, taped a message of support for the parents.

I hope the parents win this one.
….. They then began to sing, we will not be moved, and this little light of mine. They even sang in honor of Debbie Meier’s birthday, the renowned founder of the school, who has also tried to intercede on their behalf. The custodian asked for them to leave and said he was going to turn the lights out, and they refused.

Among rank and file teachers here in New York, Carmen Farina’s reputation as a sycophant and a kiss-up, kick-down administrator preceded her. My reading of this situation suggests she is deeply culpable in it.
And Mayor DeBlasio, you supposed progressive, you have much to answer for here, sir.

This story breaks my heart! I worked for years with CES and spent many wonderful days visiting CPE 1 in the 80’s and early 90’s. It’s a wonderful school with dedicated teachers and parents. Some resolution or action must be made to save this gem of a school for the children.
