Tom Engelhardt writes in the Nation that Trump’s rise to power was facilitated by the reign of the billionaire class, a tiny class to be sure, but very powerful. He assumes that Trump is a billionaire. If we ever see his taxes, we may learn that his greatest hoax was persuading people he was a billionaire. He once called himself “the king of debt.” He may owe billions. His new job may help him pay down those debts. Strangest thought of all: The Trump Presidential Library. This for a man who proudly doesn’t read books. Maybe his best talk shows ever? The full run of “The Apprentice”? Executive orders? Photographs of detention centers for the millions of immigrants he deported?
In this spooky article, he begins like this:
It’s been epic! A cast of thousands! (Hundreds? Tens?) A spectacular production that, five weeks after opening on every screen of any sort in America (and possibly the world), shows no sign of ending. What a hit it’s been! It’s driving people back to newspapers (online, if not in print) and ensuring that our everyday companions, the 24/7 cable news shows, never lack for “breaking news” or audiences. It’s a smash in both the Hollywood and car accident sense of the term, a phenomenon the likes of which we’ve simply never experienced. Think of Nero fiddling while Rome burned and the cameras rolled. It’s proved, in every way, to be a giant leak. A faucet. A spigot. An absolute flood of non-news, quarter-news, half-news, crazed news, fake news, and over-the-top actual news.
And you know exactly what—and whom—I’m talking about. No need to explain. I mean, you tell me: What doesn’t it have? Its lead actor is the closest we’ve come in our nation’s capital to an action figure. Think of him as the Mar-a-Lego version of Batman and the Joker rolled into one, a president who, as he told us at a news conference recently, is “the least anti-Semitic person that you’ve ever seen in your entire life,” and the “least racist person” as well. As report after report indicates, he attacks, lashes out, mocks, tweets, pummels, charges, and complains, showering calumny on others even as he praises his achievements without surcease. Think of him as the towering inferno of 21st-century American politics or a modern Godzilla eternally emerging from New York Harbor.
As for his supporting cast? Islamophobes, Iranophobes, white nationalists; bevies of billionaires and multimillionaires; a resurgent stock market gone wild; the complete fossil-fuel industry and every crackpot climate change “skeptic” in town; a press spokesman immortalized by Saturday Night Live whose afternoon briefings are already beating the soap opera General Hospital in the ratings; a White House counselor whose expertise is in “alternative facts”; a national-security adviser who (with a tenure of 24 days) seemed to sum up the concept of “insecurity”; a White House chief of staff and liaison with the Republicans in Congress who’s already being sized up for extinction, as well as a couple of appointees who were “dismissed” or even frog-marched out of their offices and jobs for having criticized The Donald and not fessed up… honestly, you couldn’t make this stuff up, or rather only Trump himself can do so. And by the way, just so you know, based on the last weeks of “news” I could keep this paragraph going more or less forever without even breaking into a sweat.
Among so many subjects I haven’t even mentioned, including Melania and former wife Ivana—is it even possible that she could become the US ambassador to the Czech Republic?—there are, of course, the Trump kids and their businesses and the instantly broken promises on (such an old-fashioned phrase) their conflicts of interest and the conflicts about those conflicts and the presidential tweets, threats, and bluster that have gone with them, not to speak of the issue of for-pay access to the new president. And how about Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner (another walking conflict of you-know-what), who reputedly had a role in the appointment of the new ambassador to Israel, a New York bankruptcy lawyer known for raising millions of dollars to fund a West Bank Jewish settlement and for calling supporters of the liberal Jewish group J Street “far worse than kapos” (Jews who aided the Nazis in their concentration camps). Kushner has now been ordained America’s ultimate peacemaker in the Middle East. And don’t forget that sons Donald and Eric are already saving memorabilia for the future Trump presidential library, a concept that should take your breath away. (Just imagine a library with those giant golden letters over its entrance to honor a man who proudly doesn’t read books and, as with presidential executive orders and possibly even volumes he’s “written,” signs off on things he’s barely bothered to check out.)

People often get the logic of Lincoln’s phrase wrong. The is no government of the billionaires or the corporations — they seek to place themselves beyond being governed. They intend only a government by and for them.

I read this the other day in the Nation . I only have have a few points I would challenge.
Trump was outspent by far in this election. So as abhorrent as Citizens United was there is something else going on here. Now as I have stated before, I do not think that faux populist economics is the driving force in support for Trump . Most of his supporters are Republicans and have voted Republican since Goldwater. Some of his supporters were Dixiecrats living on both sides of the Mason Dixon line, bigots.racists,homophobes,xenophobes…. Some simply want to” shoot their neighbors cow”, rather than pursue those policies that would help them get a cow. The last two are the deplorables . Then finally there is that small portion of the electorate that would never have voted for “Little Hands” if not as Engelhardt says
“the one-percentification of this country and the surge of automation (as well as globalization) that destroyed so many jobs and only helped inequality flourish, white working class Americans in particular would not have felt so left behind in the heartland of their own country . ”
Make no mistake that the election was so close in so many swing states that the loss of these voters was the difference between a narrow loss to “LittleHands ” and a massive Democratic win .
But when did those Billionaires or their interests enter our Government. We always expected them to be the driving force behind the Republican party . But William Jefferson Clinton made it a ménage a trois. Then before 2010 and Citizens United
we have almost every position in the Obama cabinet, being picked by a top executive of a bank, bailed out to the tune of 350 Billion dollars.. As an email from Michael Froman to John Podesta revealed. Then we have Obama “running around the country waving that Red Cape with TPP written on it in big Black letters in front of a ragging bull”.
Who was conducting those secrete trade talks?. That discredited Citi exec Michael Froman.
Who is it that worsened our problems with the “deep state “? Who was it that increased American military actions around the Globe , Robots / Drones count . Assassinations of foreign activists by military’s trained in the “School of the Americas” count as well.
So as as Engelhardt says; “No one said it better than French King Louis XV: (or Obama ) Après moi, le Trump”

These folks show their true colors, how they made it, by scamming and exploiting the faults of our society. That’s why their policies don’t work in the real, true, honest world. And Trump is totally and utterly torpedoing himself, as they all do.

The Trump campaign utilized data mining to the nth degree (Cambridge Analytics) and made it work to their advantage. Most don’t realize just how “anal..yzed” they were, no clue. But then that’s how propaganda and peeon control works.

It’s disappointing that Engelhardt didn’t go into more detail on the role that the Democrats have played in establishing this billionaire society. The repeal of Glass-Steagall, for instance, was a very key means, courtesy of Bill Clinton. Welfare “reform”, three-strikes, NAFTA and other “free trade” (sic) agreements, etc. have all created the increase in wealth disparity. As has been stated here many, many times, starting with the Clintons, the Democrats made the conscious decision to support the moneyed/professional class at the expense of the working class/middle class/poor. The Democrats have also been instrumental in building up the war/national security machine that Engelhardt laments.
And in case it’s not obvious, no, I’m not saying Republicans are better. I’m saying that the Third Way neoliberal “centrist” (sic) Democrats like Clinton and Tom Perez are not the solution. They are part of the problem of how we got here in the first place.

Here is my update email from the White House:

The White House
“The torch is now in our hands. And we will use it to light up the world.”
– President Donald J. Trump
Earlier this week, President Donald J. Trump stood in front of America and introduced a new chapter of American greatness; one full of prosperity, safety, and innovation.
Building on his successful first 40 days in office, President Trump laid out bold plans to improve infrastructure, bolster national security, and ensure all Americans can achieve the American dream.
President Trump’s speech resonated with legislators and Americans alike:
“Tonight, an optimistic President shared a bold agenda to get America back on track and restore the American dream for everyone.” –Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24)
“President Trump campaigned on a promise of making America great again, and tonight he offered a bold, uplifting vision for how to reach that goal – one that every American can share in.” –Congresswoman Diane Black (TN-06)
“President Trump is taking action to fulfill the commitments he made to the American people.” –Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO)
“Genuinely one of the most powerful moments I can remember from a presidential speech.” –Charlie Sykes, MSNBC
Tens of thousands of Americans gave us input before the President addressed the Nation. We listened because we want to hear directly from Americans like you. Please take just a few seconds and let us know your opinions on President Trump’s speech and vision for the future.
Tuesday night wasn’t about President Trump – it was about all Americans. It was about looking to the future, instead of dwelling on the past. It was about dreaming big, seizing the moment, and never giving up.
President Trump will fight for this country and every American until the fight is won. As he said, “The time for small thinking is over.” So let’s think big. Let’s dare to win again. And let’s keep on winning, TOGETHER.

Share Your Thoughts: Here is what I wrote on the email response:
What new policies would you like to see put in Place?
1.) Get a cabinet that is not filled with moguls from Big Oil, Mega-banking, investment and retail.
2.) Give money to the public schools. Choice does not enrich nor improve conditions for disadvantaged youth.
3.) Have Jeff Sessions resign. An independent investigator needs to find the connections between Trump and Putin. Impeachment would be the desired outcome.
4.) Get rid of Steve Bannon. White supremacists who worked for Goldman Sachs have no place in government.
5. STOP TWEETING. A President should be able to speak intelligently…using complete sentences.
6.)’d love to see a President who has compassion for those who are different. He seems to be only concerned about enriching himself, his family and billionaires.
7.) Work to increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour.
8.) Keep and expand Medicaid to help those at the bottom of society.
Additional comments:
Congratulations on being able to read a teleprompter. That ability does not make a President.
I’d like for President Trump to be able to tell the difference between a lie and the truth. He is either a compulsive lier or has to make up his own truths.
My hope is that the FBI and CIA find that Trump was knowledgeable about Putin’s involvement in getting Trump elected. Impeachment would be the best policy that Congress could employ.
Trump’s $6.2 trillion in tax cuts are mainly for the wealthy – 47% of the cuts will go to the top 1percent. This will exacerbate income inequality.
