Community Voices for Public Education is grassroots group in Houston that is a leader in the fight against high stakes testing and test prep mania. It is holding a rally tomorrow to protest DeVos and to share some good news about HISD.
4:30 pm
HISD Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center
The good news:
*Students do not need to take or pass the STAAR test this year to be promoted
*HISD school board will pass a resolution supporting immigrant families
*HISD board will not use student test scores as part of teacher evaluations this year

#BetsyDeVos just now addressing the Ed Dept: The drama around the confirmation process “has been a bit of a bear”
DeVos dismisses all dissent as “drama”. Okay. Guess that debate is over! Agree with them completely or you’re just indulging in “drama”.
She also says public schools have to work with her. Actually, they don’t. In fact, I would argue that if she doesn’t add any value they have a duty to students and parents to ignore her and focus on more worthwhile things.

Abbott has already said he will not support sanctuary cities in Texas. Local police have become more emboldened by the governor’s position. In some towns Latino looking residents are being asked to show a visa or some other document to prove they are legal residents. Abbott has also stated he will cut funds to universities offering a sanctuary campus.
