On the eve of Trump’s inauguration, the New York Times published a startling story: close associates of Trump are under investigation by American intelligence agencies for possible contacts with the Russian government.
“American law enforcement and intelligence agencies are examining intercepted communications and financial transactions as part of a broad investigation into possible links between Russian officials and associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump, including his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, current and former senior American officials said.
“The continuing counterintelligence investigation means that Mr. Trump will take the oath of office on Friday with his associates under investigation and after the intelligence agencies concluded that the Russian government had worked to help elect him. As president, Mr. Trump will oversee those agencies and have the authority to redirect or stop at least some of these efforts.
“It is not clear whether the intercepted communications had anything to do with Mr. Trump’s campaign, or Mr. Trump himself. It is also unclear whether the inquiry has anything to do with an investigation into the hacking of the Democratic National Committee’s computers and other attempts to disrupt the elections in November. The American government has concluded that the Russian government was responsible for a broad computer hacking campaign, including the operation against the D.N.C.
The counterintelligence investigation centers at least in part on the business dealings that some of the president-elect’s past and present advisers have had with Russia. Mr. Manafort has done business in Ukraine and Russia. Some of his contacts there were under surveillance by the National Security Agency for suspected links to Russia’s Federal Security Service, one of the officials said.
“Mr. Manafort is among at least three Trump campaign advisers whose possible links to Russia are under scrutiny. Two others are Carter Page, a businessman and former foreign policy adviser to the campaign, and Roger Stone, a longtime Republican operative.
“The F.B.I. is leading the investigations, aided by the National Security Agency, the C.I.A. and the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit. The investigators have accelerated their efforts in recent weeks but have found no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing, the officials said. One official said intelligence reports based on some of the wiretapped communications had been provided to the White House.”
Trump has the power to shut down the investigation after he is sworn in.

Last December, Gingrich publicly suggested that Turmp should pardon any of his advisers who broke the law.

This is sounding really dangerous. Doesn’t someone have to be convicted of a crime before they are pardoned? So their reputation should be fairly well destroyed at the least. At what point does Trump destroy his credibility? How far will the Republicans go in supporting him? While I am not a Republican I was raised in a Republican household by intelligent, caring people. There is as much variety in the Republican party as there is in the Democratic party, and there are good and bad people in both. The question becomes when will enough politicians from both parties come together and put the country’s agenda before their own?

Perhaps you should read Mike Lofgren he was a Republican staffer on the for near 3 decades, Head Republican staffer on the Senate Finance committee. He considered himself an Eisenhower Republican. By no means a lefty . Resigned in 2011 and started writing . This passage from his first book in 2011 . Sorry folks he told you Trump was coming before the last election . His critic of the Democratic party is spot on as well .
“It should have been evident to clear-eyed observers that the Republican Party is becoming less and less like a traditional political party in a representative democracy and becoming more like an apocalyptic cult, or one of the intensely ideological authoritarian parties of 20th century Europe “.

It would be interesting to see how many elected members of Congress are middle of the road Republicans and Democrats compered to the extremists.
For anyone interested, here are Wiki pieces on factions in the Democratic and Republican Parties.
There are 5 factions (the Wiki piece calls them ideological wings) in the Democratic Party

The GOP has a conservative wing made up of four factions, a moderate wing, and the libertarian wing (the KOCH brothers and their ALEC organization).

“So what’s most deeply frightening about this whole story isn’t what Russia did or didn’t do. It’s that Trump’s response and the Republican blessing of it is Trump’s most powerful demonstration that absolutely all bets are off. If he’ll do this, there’s nothing he won’t do, and nothing the GOP won’t let him get away with.”

My dream for the inauguration is that just after Trump takes the oath of office, federal marshalls swoop in and arrest him and he is charged with high crimes and treason. (They’ve had to wait until he is an elected official.) Because this occurs before Pence is sworn in, Obama and Biden remain in place for 3 months and we get an election do-over. Bernie wins.

Hi Dr. Christine Langhoff:
I hope that you are correct. However, I did not quite comprehend GOP, Democrat Party, Senators and House of Congress in both parties who seem to be lack of determination in protecting their American people and their country.
There are so much flaws in President Elect and his Cabinet. First of all, Mr. Trump has had many years in dealing with Russian and Chinese banking industries. This will be a severe threat to American economy and security. Secondly, Mr. Steve Bannon of Breibart media and Mr. Roger Stone have had BAD REPUTATION regarding lack of integrity in dealing business. Most of all, all people in President Elect’s cabinet are UNQUALIFIED regarding their credentials, experiences and lack of integrity and fairness for their position as High Authority Public Officials.
In short, how intelligent FBI and CIA can be if January 20, 2017 would be smooth sworn in for President Elect! People in high authority will SOONER or LATER taste their BITTERNESS before all commoners after January 21, 2017.
I hope that people with authority will watch all documentaries in WWII, Vietnamese War, all GLOBAL Civil Wars …

I don’t understand either, May. I remember when country came before party. In this moment, it seems money and power are more important to the Republicans than country.
John McCain spent 5 years as a POW in a hole in the ground because of our policy of using Viet Nam as a proxy war against the communism of the Soviet Union. Now his party doesn’t want an investigation into Russian interference in our election. I consider their actions treasonous. I have read that McCain is furious and I hope he will use his standing to further root out what has happened. Sadly, I don’t think he will.

I have several questions:
*Where were these guys for the past several months?
*Why is the FBI is leading the investigation?
*The investigators— led by the FBI— have “found no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing”. Is that the same FBI that released a report to the House 10 days before the election— a report that they had some INCONCLUSIVE evidence involving HRC’s emails that needed to be investigated? If so, why didn’t they release this INCONCLUSIVE evidence at the same time?
*What do I believe when the report is issued— assuming that Mr. Trump doesn’t pull the plug on the investigation altogether…

This is a sad day for America. Why are people so ignorant? Why are Republicans still in power when what they want to do is make the rich wealthier?
Trump has no culture except love of money and power. I was saddened to read that this is how he wants to trim our national budget:
“…The Corporation for Public Broadcasting would be privatized,” the Hill’s Alexander Bolton reports, “while the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities would be eliminated entirely.” In total, the administration aims to cut spending by $10.5 trillion over the next decade….”

Unfortunately, the Russians/alt right/ fake news media would have done the same sliming of Bernie. And as Trump was elected, the Hillary voters would be saying “see, here’s what America could have been today.”
Bernie is one of the most powerful Senators with the power of the bully pulpit and media attention. He has a chance – instead of inventing scenarios where super Bernie withstands the same kind of attacks that Hillary got and remains standing, I would prefer to see Bernie’s enormous popularity work to fight Trump NOW. He has the bully pulpit. If he is as popular and able to fight the right wing attacks as his supporters believe, then he should be organizing and speaking out. Using the huge majority of Trump voters that supposedly believe in Bernie and would have voted for him and will respond to anything he says. If Trump isn’t keeping his promises to those voters, they should be embracing Bernie and he can tell them all to vote for progressive Senate and House candidates in 2018. And have them pressuring their Republican lawmakers to put a break on Trump’s corruption.

I suspect I know that blue collar white working class a bit better than you. The polls were not wrong, they were dead on, dead on Nationally and dead on in those swing states. Where all showed a tightening in the last weeks . All giving Clinton the lead but all within the margin of error. Those same polls showed Sanders with HUGE double digit leads to Clinton’s single digit leads earlier.
Obama/Clinton delivered Trump to the Nation . His pathetic legacy will now be reversed. The attempt to portray his administrations as a success. Is a fraud. The biggest fraud since Reagan’s legacy was rewritten by the other half of the duopoly. It is no more evident than in education.
Where is the Fed funds rate. That tells you where the economy is at. Yes those budget hawk Republicans will now become big Keynesian’s. Yes they obstructed, but obstructed who, a feckless President with a super majority , who appointed a debt commission in the heart of the deepest recession since the Great Depression.
Trump tapped into an anger in the mid west, but even here on long Island that hard working Americans were being left behind. I saw it at a rock concert at Jones beach where Schumer was booed off stage in the intermission two years ago. They knew they were getting screwed their futures and their children’s futures in jeopardy, put on the chopping block. As usual they did not have a clear picture of why . But they knew that Wall Street Chuck was part of the problem not the solution. A demagogue with a populist message came along and they were ready. Given the alternative many of them would have gone for the progressive populist .
Obama/Clinton/ neo liberal Democrats are directly responsible for the rise of Trump and we the American people will pay dearly for his failure . As the Great Society and the New Deal get reversed .
HE and she will retire in relative comfort

I love the Bern but I could not read it . Reality smacks me in the face this morning.
Part of that reality is that the Democratic party is the problem not the Republicans. I am talking ideology, not any BS about the process. The last several weeks have seen several occasions where this was demonstrated. The Sanders amendment to the Obamacare repeal says it all. The party has relied on a captive minority vote for decades as the Republican party became a racists and racial backlash.
It is revolting that Republicans can carry the populist mantel.
While Democrats are partying with their Wall Street donors. The same donors who are jumping with joy at the electoral map. A sea of Red State houses ,the Congress, the Presidency and the Courts.

Wait, I thought it was already conclusively proven that Trump is tied to Russia who hacked the election in his favor. Now we’re investigating that? Cart, horse?
Anyway, it’s a bit late now. Today is the beginning. Of what, we shall see.
And, while I’m at it, if people here get their wish and Trump is impeached or otherwise removed, what do you think will happen then? Do you think Hillary is going to ride in on her white steed to save the day? As of today, Mike Pence is our Vice President. If “President Trump” makes you nauseous (and it should), then “President Pence” should be downright heart-stopping. At least with Trump there’s a possibility that he’ll inadvertently do the right thing just because some bankster or corporate guy or billionaire “philanthropist” ticks him off. No such hope with Pence – he’s much too focused on his right-wing goals to allow anything like that to happen. And, frankly, Trump, unlike Pence, doesn’t give a hoot about abortion, gay rights or other such issues. Pence cares deeply.

Why did Pence agree to be Trumps Vice President? . The wet noodle was about to be go down to a resounding defeat in Indiana.
He made the political calculation that losing with Trump was better for his future than going down as an unpopular Governor.
Hillary, the Russians, Comey and the Trump surge probably cost the senate and Governors race in Indiana .
Ill take Pence any day. The most dangerous part of Trump is his willingness to combine Keynesian economics with rt wing republican dogma like tax cuts and cutting the safety net. His willingness to play the populist on trade .
The effect of stimulus will disguise the tremendous pain to be felt later.
A construction worker working overtime in NY or Indiana will not know what hit him till the stimulus is gone and the destruction of Davis Bacon sets in to cut his total wage by 2/3.
Ill take Pence who was about to get booted.

The Trump Inauguration – Buying Access to the Oval Office
As Donald Trump and his team prepare for Friday’s inauguration, the mainstream media reports that there are some issues finding performers willing to “bare their souls” at the inauguration of what is turning out to be one of the more controversial presidents in recent memory. With or without a slate of “A list” celebrities, the inaugural events are going ahead and you can be part of the “inside action”….for a price, of course.
A brochure obtained by the Center for Public Integrity provides the sweaty masses and the wealthiest among us a glimpse of what can be had for donating to the 58th Presidential Inauguration. There are five “underwriter” levels, starting at $25,000 and going all the way up to $1 million or more. With each level, the perquisites vary, obviously getting better and better the more that donors are willing to fork over.
You will notice that once you reach the $100,000 level, the perks really improve; at that level, you get an “intimate policy discussion and dinner with select Cabinet appointees”, below that donation level, you’re just another face in a big crowd. When you donate $250,000, you get a candlelight dinner with appearances by the Trumps and Pences as well as a ladies luncheon where you can meet both Melania Trump and Karen Pence. When you donate $500,000, you get an intimate dinner with the Vice President and his wife and at the $1,000,000 mark, you get four tickets to a Leadership Luncheon; an “exclusive event with select Cabinet appointees and House and Senate leadership”. Just imagine, a lunch with Mitch McConnell in attendance (I presume)!
All of the funds raised go into a non-profit that is set up for the specific purpose of ushering Donald Trump into the Oval Office. We will eventually know who the donors are but not until after the inauguration takes place.
Obviously, no one (corporate or individual) is going to donate $25,000 or more to the incoming Trump Administration unless they are expecting something in return.
