Carol Burris sent an email to all members of the Network for Public Education with a list of ways that you can express your opposition to the nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. She is uniquely unfit for the office, as she has no relevant experience, and she is on record in opposition to public education. Her efforts in Detroit and in Michigan have harmed the children of that city and state. She supports charter schools, whether nonprofit or for-profit, vouchers, online charter schools, and everything else but public schools. If she is confirmed by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, she will do whatever she can to turn public funds over to private and religious schools. Please join with us in opposing her nomination.
Dear friends of public schools,
If you are receiving this email, I know that is who you are–someone who understands the vital role that public education plays in democracy. You understand that a patchwork quilt of for-profit charters, charter chains, online schools, and vouchers schools cannot work in a democracy.
You understand that public schools will be starved and become the “dumping ground” for children no one wants.
Which brings us to Betsy DeVos, who has made it clear that only the “free market” matters, not quality. She claims to be on a mission from God. That is extremism we cannot have at the helm of our education system.
We will probably not be able to stop her confirmation, but we can make it a big deal.
We can work to ensure that no Democrat votes for her.
We can raise public awareness. We can send a warning shot across the bow.
And who knows, maybe, just maybe, a few Republicans will vote against her as well.
During the next few months the Network for Public Education will be involved in a campaign to accomplish the above.
Here is a link to our toolkit.
It is designed to use the holiday recess as a time when Senators are bombarded with pressure to vote no on DeVos.
It provides sample letters, phone scripts and a letter to the editor.
We will be tracking how many engage in these actions so that we have feedback on effectiveness to share with other organizations.
Our senate email campaign motivated near 100k to send an email. But that was easy, these actions take more time.
However, they are also far more effective.
Take the time to do them yourself and then share the link.
Post the link everywhere.
There will be future NPE Actions. This is our first and we will learn from it.
Trump will pass. But if he destroys public education that will undermine our Democracy for generations.
Here is that link again 🙂

For some points about DeVos bubbling up.
Begin quote
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown this week demanded that President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education Nominee Betsy DeVos make good on $5.3 million in unpaid fines and penalties she owes the State of Ohio for breaking the law. DeVos’ All Children Matter Political Action Committee (PAC) owes Ohio money for campaign finance violations dating back to 2008. All Children Matter, which was run by DeVos, broke Ohio election law by illegally funneling $870,000 in contributions from its nationwide PAC to its Ohio affiliate — and accordingly, the state of Ohio levied a record fine of more than $5 million against DeVos’ group. Yet nearly a decade later, DeVos’ group has not paid the debts for its illegal activities.
“This $5.3 million that Betsy DeVos owes Ohio could pay for more teachers, technology upgrades and critical priorities to help us educate Ohio kids,” said Brown. “She owes this money to Ohio’s taxpayers and it’s outrageous that a billionaire has failed to make good on these fines for eight years while our schools are strapped for money.” End Quote. The full letter is here. It is another example of letter wrting in addition to the vital point of unpaid fines in Ohio.

Will Senator Brown vote against confirming DeVos? Unknown.

I think he will vote against DeVos because it’s a political no-brainer. The real question is he can be moved to change his mostly pro-DFER stance on education.

The phone call will take about 2 minutes for each senator. That is less than 5 minutes to call them. I implore all, please take the time do so! Start here for the call: http://civilrights.org/action_center/resources/calling-congress.html

As a former Capitol Hill staffer, I can tell you that the calls mean nothing unless they are part of a flood of calls.
Every caller should ask for the legislative assistant in charge of education issues. If they don’t put you through or say that the staffer is not available, as for the name and email address. If you do get through, make a note of contact information. Then follow up with emails to the office referencing your call, mention the staffer and, if applicable, if your impression was positive or negative; were they professional and responsive? Call again at the beginning of the year and before the vote is scheduled. Ask for the legislative assistant by name on follow-ups.
Leave your name, address and phone number and ask for a follow-up message when the vote is taken. Also share the name of any education staffers with other constituents and ask them to do the same.
If you care about education issues, you should become a buddy or a thorn in the side of that staffer. Be prepared to go back to step one if there is turnover in the position.
