Does not matter much…..unless……there is anything provable about the talk of hacking and altering vote returns in places like Michigan and Wisconsin. Let it be noted…..that Hillary did well in areas where teachers were out in force fighting for one issue or another….in much of the country, Bill Gates and Arne Duncan had been successful in bullying them into lethargy.
In an ideal world, a sane world, the electoral college would have been dumped into the garbage bin of history generations ago. However, the hurdles to get rid of it are almost insurmountable. It serves no useful purpose, it needs to be junked. I realize that there are people who hate democracy and feel that the public are a dangerous mob whose vote should be suppressed. How dare those peons have a right to vote. Thus Americans did not get to vote for senators until 1913. The GOP governors are very good at voter suppression. The founding fathers had a contemptuous view of most Americans unless they needed them to fight various wars for liberation.
No, the Electoral College is NOT “here to stay;” that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. Do you WANT it to stay? Is that it?
Anything is possible, including conservative outrage IF it goes the other way in a future presidential election, with the Democrat getting fewer voters but “winning” in the Electoral College. That might change a few minds in BOTH parties.
Or, if Trump is as big a disaster as he appears he’ll be, the backlash from the MAJORITY—and simple mathematics verifies that Clinton voters ARE the majority and we’ll be joined by many others who will see the error of their Trump vote in time—will be fierce and overwhelming, which could give us the conditions to change the constitution as early as 2021, eliminating this abominal, anti-democratic vestige of slavery called the “Electoral College.”
After this year’s election how can anyone possibly predict the future with confidence. “Here to stay?” I wouldn’t be so cocky about your apparent preference.
Here’s a question for constitutional lawyers: In view of the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, is the vote of the Electoral College still constitutional?
In round numbers, California has a population of 39,000,000, and its citizens have 55 electoral votes, which means that each California electoral vote represents 700,000 citizens.
Wyoming has a population of about 600,000, and its citizens have three electoral votes, which means that each Wyoming electoral vote represents 200,000 citizens
That means that each Wyoming citizen’s vote counts for three times the vote of each California citizen, which is greatly unequal.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1954 Bolling v. Sharp decision ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause applies to federal matters through the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment.
Therefore, doesn’t that make the Electoral College unconstitutional as currently configured and that the Electoral College cannot validly vote for a President until the inequality is remedied by equalizing the value of all citizen’s electoral representation by adjusting the number of electors from each state so that no elector represents more than 200,000 citizens, thereby equalizing among the states the number of citizens whom each elector represents?
Excellent points! I’ve been saying that the entire idea of the Electoral College is contrary to our constitution and the principles that undergird it. This is a very good set of argument and we need to expound upon them and spread the word. That’s how change begins!
The electoral college can be amended. It is antithetical to democracy. Would you like it if your governor were elected not by popular vote but by a state electoral college?
On November 12, 2012, at 8:45 P.M., Donald Trump tweeted: “The electoral college is a disaster for democracy.” And, in his November 13, 2016, “60 Minutes” TV interview, Trump told millions of watching Americans that he still agrees with his Tweet, telling Americans, “I would rather see it where you went with simple votes.”
Spoke to my best friend, a German who has lived his whole life in Germany, today. “What the hell is going on over there? Have you lost your minds? How can someone get 2 million votes more and not win? I had no answers.

Kentucky teachers fight back.

They weren’t campaigning to win the popular vote. So your question doesn’t deal with the hypothetical of Trump trying to win the popular vote.
Anyway, the electoral college is here to stay. Hillary blew it, was too lazy to campaign in Wisconsin and only did Michigan the last week.
They weren’t campaigning to lose it . But you are right she blew it going after Republicans in never never land

My mom always said that life is unfair. Boy, was she right!

Good luck with that .

The electoral college is part of the Constitution.

True, but the Trump group still say they have a MANDATE to do as they wish. When, where will this insanity end. I for one am scared to death.
Begin by raising your voice publicly, ridiculing and belittling their ludicrous, mendacious claims about a “mandate!”

Powerful and accurate piece on Trump.
