Please watch this short video, which was posted by the Atlantic, about a Syrian refugee family adapting to life in Chicago. The children learn English faster than their parents, and they learn through dance and movement. It is a lovely film, directed by Colleen Cassingham and Alex Lederman.

As with almost 100% of immigrant families, the original parents many times never quite learn English. Their children are usually bilingual. And the 3rd generation almost always is English only with a smattering of the mother tongue if any.

Good to see this was under aided by an academic institution, and school of journalism.

This lovely film traces the resettlement journey of a Syrian family. It shows us the best of humanity: family, love, health, community and kindness. Politics are nowhere in this portrait. Mohamed is grateful to be receiving medical treatment from an oncologist wearing a yamaka. As I have stated before, while we have our bigots and xenophobes, we also have many people with open hearts and minds like the volunteers that help the refugees in this film.

A beautiful story about a lovely family. I hesitate to share it because I know what kind of response it will get. My heart breaks when I think how difficult it must be to move to a foreign land because you fear for the safety of your loved ones if you stay. And yet, the trump voting “friends” I know will say that we are wasting our resources on foreigners and not taking care of our own.
