So now we have to be terrified if he wins and if he loses? It’s amazing how much power people are handing this man. It doesn’t even matter what happens on November 8 at this point. He’s already won.
Actually, yes. As I wrote earlier, if you look back at the Louisiana U.S. Senate race of 1990, it is inarguable, in retrospect, that David Duke won the long game even though he lost the election. The Republican Party, starting with Gingrich, has taken his platform and mainlined it to cripple the American political process. Look at the Republican platform of today and compare it to Duke’s in 1990. It is the same, only now it is institutionalized. Steve Scalise, the current House majority leader, once bragged–in private, of course–that he was “David Duke without the baggage.” Immigrants have rhetorically replaced the mythical “welfare queen.” Misinterpretation of the history of the 2nd Amendment–it was actually designed to allow people to protect the institutions of government, not undermine them–now passes for constitutional literacy. The federal appropriations process, something that always functioned until Gingrich became Speaker, is now a source of undermining government rather than a reliable engine that makes it run. Trumpism is just the pure distillation of everything that aggrieved white supremacists could only have dreamt about 30 years ago. See Richard Burr’s most recent comments as another brick in this foundation.
Trump is channeling Gingrich, with a new version of Gingrich Contract with America. I think your comments are spot on.

I just heard Rachel Maddow interview the Libertarian VP candidate, former Governor, Bill Weld, who is a gentleman and serious critical thinker. Although he admits he voted for himself and Johnson, he CLEARLY urged others to vote for Hillary.
He specified how dangerous Trump is and how the country will suffer if he is elected. Maddow delved into his perspective with great determination and skill and to the level that she was able to create a situation where Weld spoke “truth to power”…words are his.

The Democratic party shot themselves in the foot. They COULD have selected Bernie Sanders. I truly believe that much of this nightmare scenario could have been avoided had they done so for more reasons than I can post here. Not only did the Democratic party lose, so have we. The scenario listed above is certainly one aspect of that.
Look at who heads the DNC…Debbie W-S had to be fired during the platform meetings for her hacked and disclosed emails on how ‘the fix’ was in to defeat Bernie. And now we see the new ‘interim’ head of the DNC, Donna Brazil, leaking hacked info to Hillary on debate questions.
We must change the system so that the DNC and the RNC do not rule our politics. Also, the Comey affair should convince everyone to make major changes in our rules of engagement to choose a President.
Gordon, as the saying goes, it is what it is. We are faced with a choice. Bernie is campaigning for Hillary. Win or lose, Trump is a nightmare.

I’m just trying to get through this election cycle, I’m not even projecting into 2019. Hillary will declare martial law? I’m calling baloney on that scenario. If Hillary wins, Trump will be discarded and relegated to the loser’s box. He will be too busy rebuilding his empire, image and wealth. I can speculate just as much as Damon Linker who wrote the fantasy/horror piece.

It’s obvious that the U.S. is in danger of repeating the Balkan Conflict where ethnic/ religoius groups tore each other apart after Yugoslavia collapsed in the early 1990s.
Look at the election map, and it is easy to imagine the dark red and blue states waging a bloody Civil War as citizens slaughter citizens. And it isn’t too far fetched that Donald Trump will become the President for life of the red states. First will come the cleansing where the majority in each state turns on the minority and exterminates them. Then the Red vs Blue Civil War will erupt from coast to coast.
Who will eventually end troops to stop this carnage and slaughter – The European Union, China and/or Russia, or all three who will then occupy and divide up what’s left?
No more America and will the European Union, China or Russia try Donald Trump for crimes against humanity, find him guilty, and hang him or will his family be executed like Saddam Hussein’s family was?
When that day comes, how many of us will have survived to live under the flag of China, Russia and/or an occupation by European troops from the EU?

I actually agree, Aggod. Most Americans are working, watching sports, playing with their kids and have busy lives. Revolutions don’t break out in middle-class societies. But Trump has been distributing pitchforks to racists, misogynists, anti-Semites, anti-immigration followers for nearly a year. He will find a way to make money from his base of deplorables.
It doesn’t take 99.9 percent of the people to destroy a country. Actually, all it takes is less than 5 percent. That’s about 12 million people, Trump’s core followers, the racists and foolish minions who will follow him into the flames of hell if that’s what he wanted.
In fact, if more than 90 percent sit around doing nothing, that empowers the millions who blindly follow Trump to tear apart the U.S. republic. That is how Hitler and his Nazis came to power because the majority of people did nothing as they hoped there would be no knock on their doors. This is how Mao and the Little Red Guard launched the Cultural Revolution in China.

Our greatest weakness may be that we have not experienced totalitarianism, and so may miss historic warning signals. However one cannot point to a single 250-y.o. democracy that dissolved into totalitarianism under economic pressure or even foreign invasion, can one? Let’s get real and buckle down to grass-roots organizing for (a)candidates who will work for the common good, and (b)overturning laws & policies that undermine democracy and civil rights.
I suspect B35…that the American Indians trying to protect yet another of their assigned reservations from being defiled by pipelines, or from burial of drums of nuclear materials with a half life of 10,000 years, might disagree about totalitarian behavior by the US government. And so many minority groups who lived under quotas to get jobs, particularly government jobs, and could only find limited housing if they were of color, or get into colleges and professional schools under quota systems. And of course, women who were not, are not. allowed to control their own bodies and their own health.
Some have fought American totalitarians for the past few centuries. Once again, we see the Old South rising in the form of the rising audacity of the KKK.

Ellen, I was reacting to doomsday pronouncements that we’re headed for takeover by totalitarian govt/ dictatorship. Totalitarian behavior by our govt must be & often has been fought vigorously by democratic means wherever it shows its ugly head. To my mind, the struggle is maintaining civil liberties.
Most dangerous on the legal front would be laws/ policies which undermine the power of the vote in favor of moneyed interests. Untrammelled capitalism is a greater threat to civil liberties here than ideological hegemony, given our history. Next in line would be Patriot Act/ Homeland Security Act, guarding against abuse of civil liberty in the name of fighting terrorism. I am not sure which of those two has had more of a hand in militarization of police.

First, the U.S. did not invent democracy.
Where was democracy invented? Greece! For 186 years the city of Athens was a self-consciously, decidedly democratic, autonomous, aggressive, and prosperous.
What happened to Athens democracy? In 338 BC the Macedonian King Philip II defeated a combined force from Athens and Thebes. Democracy in Athens came to an end.
Another example is Democracy in Republican Rome. From about 300 BC until the establishment of the Empire in about 50 BC, Rome contained a strong element of popular participation,even if balanced by a still stronger aristocratic tradition.
Then there is the Rise (1919) and Fall of the Weimar Republic in Germany that was brought to an end by Adolf Hitler as chancellor in 1933. Yes, it didn’t survive 250 years but the Roman Republic did and Athens came close.
Why did America’s Founding Fathers dislike; distrust democracy, and no other country has copied the U.S. system?
DEmocracy, to the Founding Fathers, meant mob rule, and Donald Trump lead and represents a mob.

I doubt Trump will want to stage a revolution unless he can figure out a way to make it pay. Trump will probably slink off to his next failed project, Trump TV.
As for the Democrats, they will probably continue to have a difficult time if the Republicans hang on to the legislative branch. Democrats should be doing some soul searching nevertheless. They should be asking themselves why these blue collar union employees identify with Trump. Perhaps if they paid more attention to labor and stopped pandering to Wall St and marketplace ideology, they would have a stronger base.

Could this election– mainstream Dems attacked by populists at both ends of spectrum– finally awake Dems to the fact that they’ve had to gain [& lose] elections by small margins because they’ve allowed the vestiges of blue-collar America to be wined-&-dined away to Repubs w/ ideological talk which has proved not to fill the belly? A federally-funded infrastructure program could fill a lot of bellies. But then, we’ll need to beat some folks down-ticket to allow her to do even that much.

The FBI continues to prove to the US and to the world that as a govt. agency, it is far from credible. Read Zinn vs. the FBI on CoIntelPro. From the days of J. Edgar Hoover and his clients (featuring his pal, Roy Cohn who was also a close pal of Trump and introduced him the to Mafia bosses)…to today, with Comey defying his boss, the US Attorney General Lynch, and publishing, with the help of Repub turncoat Chaffetz, his phony letter of accusation to influence the election.

No, Dienne, I don’t think so. Director Comey has made no formal announcement about the FBI investigation of ties between Russia and the Trump campaign, as he did with the Clinton campaign. Everyone in this article is off the record. I will wait to hear a report based on evidence before reaching a conclusion.

The LA Times today has an article on the re-opening investigation on Trump’s first choice for his campaign manager (whom Trump had to fire due to the Russian connections) who has done business with Putin and the Russians for decades. This is FACT not fiction. All it takes is some time to read up on it.

If we just ignored the election, Trump will be president. He will get 2, maybe 3 appointments to the Supreme Court. Federal ed funds will be turned over to the state’s for vouchers. Efforts to stop climate change will end. The military will get an okay for torture. No more abortions or gay marriage.
Maybe you don’t care. I do.
You mistake my concern, Diane.
What if scenarios are just that “what if” and while making for some interesting discussions, they generally serve other purposes than enlightening/illuminating a given situation. And to add another “what if” as in “If we just ignored the election, Trump will be president” doesn’t further your argument as it is not necessarily true or necessarily probable that your stated outcome will happen.
However, we WILL know in 8 days, thankfully ending all the “what if” scenarios in this presidential election season. And perhaps doing again what has been done best since you started the blog–Discussing a better education for all!

You call yourself an educator? I am glad you don’t teach children because you clearly don’t value them, or people for that matter.
A developing embryo is not a child. When you allege that an abortion is the same as killing children, you are spreading exaggerated misinformation.
The 1st stage is the zygote. The zygote is microscopic and contains the entire DNA blueprint information.
The next stage is the blastocyst. After the blastocyst, it is not an embryo. It actually takes 5 weeks before we have the start of the embryonic period. This is when all the baby’s major system and structures start to develop.

Where are Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders? They should push for rapid indictment of Comey under the Hatch Act.
I still do not understand the confusion. If you are in a battleground state and do not want Trump elected, vote for Hillary. If you are not in a battleground state, vote your conscious, write-in, stay home, go third party – it likely makes no difference. You can complain about Hillary all day and night but it doesn’t really affect the election.
After Nov 8th, start picking up where Bernie or Jill left off.
