Our Revolution, the organization that was supposed to carry on Bernie’s political momentum, was formed as a 501c4, meaning it is designed to raise money from wealthy donors, and not as a grassroots organizing tool. Bernie didn’t even campaign for Tim Canova in Florida, and his treatment of Canova lost him a lot of respect and political capital among the grassroots.
Bernie’s movement is all but dead, and his hard-core supporters have moved on to Jill Stein or to issue-based campaigns such as supporting Medicare for all or opposing fracking.

Bernie’s movement is not all but dead. There is the OurRevolution that is picking up where Bernie left off. As Bernie says, we have big issues that have to be addressed and just because Bernie did not get the Democratic nomination for President does not mean we stop discussing the challenges before us and working toward resolving them.
Bernie’s movement may not be dead, but Bernie’s leadership of it is. His endorsement of Hillary pounded the first several nails. His treatment of Tim Canova has leveled off the last nail.
Bernie is the first to admit that he has had to make compromises. He’s the only democratic socialist in the Congress and he has to talk to tea party types, Ayn Randians, corporate Democrats and assorted DINOs. And, if by some miracle, Jill Stein became president, she would have to deal with the Rs and Ds and yes, the saint Jill Stein would also have to make compromises. Then she would be savaged by the ideological purists like Chris Hedges and the Common Dreams commentariat. Bernie must be condemned to hell because he endorsed Hillary. Thank goodness he is doing what has to be done to prevent a human disaster like Trump from becoming the president. It’s DT or HRC, there’s nothing in between to challenge these two.
The most complicated thing about Democracy is that it means Hear All Voices … and then compromise.
Public education is not dead. Manufacturing is not dead. Occupy is not dead. The Revolution is alive. Bernie too. Diane’s classroom is alive. My classes of middle schoolers will continue to amaze and inspire, alive with dedication to ideas, ideals, and each other. Good will never go away. This Donald too shall pass.
And the corollary: This Hillary too shall pass. (unfortunately not for at least four years).
LCT… Thank you for your up-beat, positive attitude.
Bernie Sanders and his supporters brought a much needed conversation to the forefront, as did the Occupy Wall Street movement and now the Black Lives Matter movement.
It is always important to celebrate the small victories along the way. It is also important to accept that the work and the struggle is never over.
