The Chicago Teachers Union plans a protest rally tomorrow, calling on Mayor Emanuel to fight for funding for the public schools. The schools face an intolerable 39% budget cut because of the failure of the city and state to fund them.
CTU to protest Mayor Emanuel’s refusal to stabilize Chicago Public Schools on Wednesday
CHICAGO—The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has turned an imposed Chicago Public Schools (CPS) furlough day into a “fight back” day and will lead a series of demonstrations throughout the Loop on Wednesday, June 22. The Union, parents, students, education justice activists and others are calling on Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago City Council and other lawmakers to fund public schools and implement a series of measures that will lead to long-term sustainability of the district.
Last month, the CTU released details of a $502 million CPS revenue recovery package and called on Emanuel and the City Council to stabilize the district. The Union said this act of “self-help” will ensure lawmakers in Springfield that local leaders are fully committed to restoring funding to our schools.

Where is Rahm Emanuel? He was all over the news bragging when he closed all those public schools. If he’s such a tough guy one would think he could get some funding back from the state for the city.
One of the many, many maddening contradictions in the incoherent ed reform movement is how they promise people that if they just go along schools will be supported. But they always, always renege. They never come thru. It doesn’t matter how compliant and obedient public schools are they always get screwed.

According to the ed reform chorus Chicago test scores and grad rates are up.
So what do public schools have to do to get the support they were promised?
These people never come thru. It’s always a “crisis” and public schools are always collateral damage.
Are they just lousy advocates or do they not actually support public schools?

The echo chamber finally noticed what’s happening in Chicago, but only because charter school funding is threatened. None of the thousands of paid advocates in ed reform could be bothered to advocate for public schools.
“Agnostics” my foot. The Obama Administration should be ashamed they packed the US Dept of Ed with people who are ONLY interested in promoting their preferred “sector”.
They’re paid to work for public schools, no matter how unfashionable our schools are in DC.

OUCH…
If the city or state can only spend “what” they take (taxes), did they fail to take
available funding?
The “cure” to the “failure” depends on “what” has failed…
“Understanding WHAT a system is, and is NOT, is central to improving quality”
When the results don’t map onto the “myth”, how does repeating the myth change
the results?
