The following comment was posted on the blog on Saturday. I won’t add the teacher’s name but you can find it if you search the comments.
She writes:
“As a public school teacher working and fighting for the #SchoolsOurStudentsDeserve, I can understand the conflict about coming to NC. As much as I’d like for NC to not gain one cent from NPE, I also know how much the educators and public school supporters here need support. Not just through emails, blog posts, and social media, but they need to see people, real people, showing up to stand against the regressive, dangerous rhetoric and laws being used in our General Assembly and Governor’s office. I would rather NPE come and everyone in attendance participate in a mass action on our state house or in the streets of Raleigh to show that we ALL stand together against any injustice, to show that we see how ALL of our lives are interconnected, and that if just one student, teacher, parent, or citizen is discriminated against, then we will ALL fight back for those people. Public schools can be a great equalizer, if we also find ways to make our community equitable for students and families when they leave the school door. Come to North Carolina, NPE, and bring your strong spirits, your inspiring words, and maybe even your marching shoes. And if you are worried about supporting this unjust legislature, I’m sure we can gather a list of businesses that have come out with statements against the hateful HB2 so that you know who deserves your presence and your patronization.”

Thank you for your post. It is important that we as teachers behave in humanistic and passionate ways to find the best paths for our children’s education. It is not enough to merely leave NC in the throes of a bigoted law and reprehensible representatives. We as members of NPE should use this opportunity to join those of our community and those in NC who will fight back against these unconstitutional inequalities. I, for one, will be in Releigh.

For those of us unable to attend the NPE conference in North Carolina is there a way, perhaps through a petition, that we can add our names to those fighting for justice in North Carolina?

Great idea, Toni, I will go to the NPE board with this suggestion. We are printing up buttons and cards for attendees to wear and to leave with any businesses they patronize, to let them know that we want HB2 repealed and we support equality for all.

I had Diontae for 2 years in preschool! His cousins are also working on opt out at their school! So proud of my kids! I had to share this with you. I reconnected with Diontae when the principal, same one that was there when I taught, had him arrested for a BS charge which, was eventually dropped. He’s gone from a scared kid to leading opt out at his school. He is fighting the administration and bullying teachers using CPS policies including their Bully form and Information from the CPS policies. He’s already gotten recess back. The principal called the police on me when I went to his dance performance. The school is a hot mess. But one child can make a difference! Im moving to AZ in a week, but have hooked him up with CORE, Nidalis, Raise Your Hand, etc. so now he has a whole army behind him. I’m also working with 2 other former students who are organizing opt out at their school. I’m hoping to connect with some folks when I get to AZ to start planning some push backs. I have a few connections, in different areas so we’ll see what happens. I can no longer teach due to work injury. I was forced to resign or be fired by CPS. Still fighting that. I am happy NPE is carrying their message to NC. And I hope educational & corporate forces in the research triangle will exercise whatever clout they still have in this know-nothing state, to bring it to heel. But I am angry at rootless friends who decide to retire there because it is so cheap. As a young adult I enjoyed lo-cost vacations there– but now that I know what it cost their residents– never again! Good-bye until you get a clue, Outer Banks & Cape Hatteras!

Reblogged this on S.L. Schmitz and commented:
This. This is important. North Carolina needs to grow up and grow a pair. P.S. I live in this retroactive state, and I wish I could move home. Know where home is? Illinois in a suburb called Naperville. Everyone knows how well Illinois is treating its teachers and retirees right now
