DeRay McKesson has the distinction of being a candidate for mayor of Baltimore and an alumnus of Teach for America. He has gained considerable celebrity for his role in Black Lives Matter and protests in Baltimore and Ferguson.
The media has fastened on him, and the TFA PR machine has amplified his role.
“But for all the attention he’s received in the last year-and-a-half, Mckesson’s ties to Teach For America (TFA) have largely escaped scrutiny. Mckesson is an alumnus of the 501(c)3 nonprofit founded by Wendy Kopp in 1990, which education policy experts today regard as the vanguard of the school privatization movement. It is also a media juggernaut in its own right, known for deploying a remarkably sophisticated public relations arsenal to advance an agenda focused on crushing teachers’ unions and privatizing public school systems.
“TFA’s funders—including the Waltons, Bill and Melinda Gates, and top Fortune 500 corporations—all have plenty to gain from the commodification of public goods and the destruction of public service unions, and its 11,000 corps members provide a valuable service to that end.
“There are plenty of examples in TFA’s 25-year history to draw from. When 7,500 (overwhelmingly black) New Orleans teachers were illegally fired in the desperate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, TFA marshalled its ranks to fill the void. The fired teachers had belonged to a union, which might have resisted later campaigns to privatize the city’s schools.
“The same applies to the mass firings and school closures that have taken place in other cities, including New York, Chicago, D.C., and Baltimore. Wherever there’s a teachers’ union that needs busting, TFA is ready to supply its army of freshly-groomed recruits to serve as scabs.
“DeRay’s decision to run for mayor of Baltimore therefore demands a closer look at his relationship with TFA. His platform contains some good proposals, such as a $15 minimum wage and loan forgiveness for low-income college students. But not only is the rest consistent with the regressive policies advocated by the network of foundations and policymakers associated with it, some of the people linked to his campaign hail from that same background—like his treasurer, Nakeia Drummond, who previously worked as a public school administrator in Baltimore. Her LinkedIn profile identifies her as an “education reform strategist.”
“What’s more, there is even some evidence that TFA utilized its PR apparatus to fuel Mckesson’s meteoric rise to national prominence in the first place.
“Accountability and Transparency”
“The first sign of Teach For America’s agenda finding expression in Mckesson’s platform was his online campaign announcement. The text is rife with neoliberal buzzwords like “accountability” and “transparency”—not bad concepts by themselves, until you remember what TFA’s brand of accountability means for public school teachers, and then apply it to Mckesson’s proposals.
“We deserve to know where our city services — from housing and sanitation, to schools and police — are doing well and falling short,” Mckesson declared in his campaign announcement. “To this end, we must invest in a broad range of systems and structures of accountability and transparency, including the release of the internal audits of the Baltimore City Public School System along with annual and timely audits of all city agencies.”
TFA is ambitious. Why not take control of Baltimore?

Thank you so much for posting this! I hope it generates public discussion and more coverage in Baltimore.
I was so impressed with McKesson and somewhat inspired listening to him in the aftermath of Ferguson, especially after his appearance on The Daily Show. So when I started to research his background and saw, much to my dismay, his TFA “credentials,” I was so disappointed. I had hoped he would become one of the truth-telling TFA alums, but recent comments show that not to be the case.
He has great gifts. Let’s hope he doesn’t use them to undermine the very things he professes to value.

Many folks black and white in the St. Louis area decried the “outside” agitators like McKesson in the aftermath of the Brown incident. Picking Michael Brown of Ferguson, MO as the poster boy for the Black Live Matter movement was quite shortsighted. If I may give an anecdote about the Brown incident:
At the beginning of the school year that fall I had a student come up and ask me what I thought of the situation. He was assigned to be in my “homeroom”-all seniors anxious to graduate. I didn’t recognize him but I didn’t always recognize all students even though the school is a mid size (1,000 students) in a small town. I told him that viewed from one angle it appeared to be a cold blooded unwarranted killing by the officer. And that viewed from another perspective it could be viewed as a legitimate self defense by the officer. I told him I couldn’t make any judgement as I wasn’t there and that I would have to wait for the judicial process (however imperfect that is, especially for African and Latino-Americans) to play out.
He responded that he believed the officer was justified, continuing he said “We just moved here this summer from Ferguson to get away from all the idiots who had moved in and who didn’t respect themselves nor others.” He opined that M. Brown was stupid thug who got what he deserved, especially after Brown’s beating of a quite smaller stature store clerk.
Realize that there are plenty of racists in our small town and surrounding area, I used to confront students displaying the Confederate battle flag to show their southern heritage. Many fly that flag to antagonize others. This student was not one of those racists, he was/is a proud African American and was disgusted by the events in Ferguson, especially the “outside agitators”.
My take on McKesson is that it appears that he was trying to build some “street creds” among the African American community by his actions in Ferguson.

We owe debts of gratitude to Ms. Ravitch’s blog, and the reporter Drew Franklin for caring more about our lives in Baltimore City than our local “news” organizations do. Maybe some local reporter could ask about the residency requirement for a Mayoral run. The Md. State Board of Elections specifies “a resident and qualified voter of Baltimore City for at least 1 year preceding the election”. Seems like this candidate has been everywhere but Baltimore for a long time.
And regarding TFA’s influence on education here, it’s kept a closely guarded secret. Charter school operators do not, in my experience, disclose which teachers are TFA trainees before, during, or after their visits as “teachers”.
Finally, of the 13 candidates for Mayor of Baltimore, at least three have privatization sympathies: Pugh- owns a charter, Warnock- owns a charter and McKesson- wants to own a charter.
Why not put TFA in charge? Because now we know better.

Jacobin posted a letter to McKesson from the progressive caucus of Philadelphia teachers:
https://www.jacobinmag.com/2015/10/black-lives-matter-teach-for-america/
“Dear Mr Mckesson,
As the social justice caucus within the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, we were surprised to see that you are coming to Philadelphia to speak alongside leaders of Teach For America (TFA). The Caucus of Working Educators is committed to racial justice in our schools and society, and we stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
We see Teach For America as working in opposition to the goals of publicly funded education for all students in Philadelphia and to the goal of increasing the number of teachers of color and teachers who are committed to building relationships with communities over the long term, which we see as an integral component of culturally responsive teaching.”

If the Demorats were really allies of public education, then the Repugnants would have ZERO chance of achieving their goal of turning education into a corporate cash cow. However, as President Obama has shown and future Democrats will follow, the privatization of segregation, divisive skimming within communities, and abandonment of the poor will be effectively accomplished by a Democrat. Oh, the Democrats won’t completely abandon the poor: EBT cards, a phone, and internet access (coming soon enough) will be the holy trinity of Democrat compassion.
The only reason internet access will be added is because the corporate sponsors of the politicians see that it is a means to significantly reduce the cash economy in poor communities and recycle public money into corporate coffers. That is already the case for the EBT cards and phones.

I hereby declare that the organization formerly known as “TFA” or “Teach For America” is henceforth and forever renamed “GFA” or “Grift From America”.
It’s alumni are led to believe after a couple of years of pretending to be a teacher they are qualified for such posts as State Education Commissioner or even US Secretary of Education.
Since they are hired with great fanfare to go in and destroy professions and institutions along with the lives of veteran educators, policymakers, researchers, and politicians who have dedicated their own lives to playing by the rules and working hard to obtain legitimate credentials and degrees they are not allowed to claim the title of “teacher” any longer.
They are grifters, pure and simple, out to create a horde of wealth off the backs of the poor and vulnerable and from the public coffers.
They may enter the program as naive do-gooders with oversized egos that tell them only they can fix the world but their neoliberal fantasies only buy them a short period of forgivable error. When they stay in their position until their obligation is fulfilled and when they take jobs they are unqualified to hold they no longer merit the benefit of the doubt.
They are a scourge upon our nation’s schools, legislatures, and public offices.
Remember that and, if you care at all about your profession and public education in this country, remember that you must fight them with all your strength and stamina. They will give you no quarter nor will they hesitate to bulldoze right over you if you stand in their way.

Sadly, in our district so many of those who “stood in the way” have already been viciously bulldozed. The voices needed to organize and fight reform, those who must “fight them with all…strength and stamina,” have already been methodically put out of the system. More often than not these days, it is only short-term, non-contract, non-union employees left to face the abuse. (As for me? I wrote a book about my experiences, and would encourage every single teacher, employed, retired or dismissed, to do the same!)

Looking at the bigger picture from farther away, stuff like this was to be expected, especially in the face of the ever growing parental pushback against all things reform. The reformers have realized that they can’t trick us into supporting their toxic policies, so they’ve taken off the gloves and are focusing on doing an end run around the citizenry by infiltrating and further corrupting the political process. Taking the influence and power of money off of the table would sure make this fight shorter and easier.
